Throttle actuators can be rebuilt for under 100 USD if you do the swap yourself. Very easy and way cheaper than the the 2k for two brand new ones.

The rod bearing issue is a oil issue not from the actual bearing, there is a guy named Troy juep you can find him on instagram he has done the most s85 rebuild in the world knows the engine better than anyone and is famous for his stroker kits for the s85. He has ran many test with many different oils 10w 60 10w 40 the best one he found that is best for this car is 5w 50 if anyone of you s85 owners are reading this switch over or be left behind with a blown engine.

its not an oil issue. s85 is a racing engine... you should treat it like that. do not use it when its winter ( without any good engine+oil heater ), do not do those idiotic "show of revs" when you are not moving, let your engine fully warm before hard driving, do not forget to change your oil and the most important thing is: if you are not the first owner of your bmw that has s85 engine, change those bearings right away!

2006 owner with 60k miles. New Rear Diff and New Transmission, clutch and flywheel so far. Around 19k in repairs. Nervous about the engine issues but so far so good. Fingers crossed. :) Good video.

That's insane. I've been looking at one with roughly 74K miles that is absolutely meticulous. One owner, etc etc. It's a 6spd manual (I have no interest in SMG) and these videos are just making me wonder more and more if I should even buy it. I have a E46 M3 and the vanos just went out @ 140K miles so naturally that gives me reason for concern.

I just bought a 2007 M5 and got it for a great price because it's limp mode. Now I'm troubleshooting a misfire on cylinder 8. I hope to find the problem and drive the beast!

Good news kinda aside from the fact that rod bearings are gone. The M5 has been towed to BMW in Murray Utah and was quoted with tax for main bearings, oil pan gasket, coolant and oil $2700.00. Now let’s just hope the crank is good. I’m hoping as it just started making the noise.

17,000? That's for people who take everything to the dealership. I looked up the cost of those parts and if I had a m5 I could have all those things done for less than 5 grand, guaranteed. Makes me wonder if I should get a m6.

blacka dax Definitly get a clean one. I do all the work on my E92 M3 and LOVE the car. I’m closing in on 100k mile personally put on the car, 116k total at the moment. Def get the primary cats removed or hollowed out on the S85 for the best mod. Big power difference over 40whp gain.

Alex Martinez I have a M6 manual none smg. I just removed secondary cats resonator and muffler delete. How you know if removing the or hollowing the primary cats will gain 40hp or best mod ?

The cost of running a E60 M5 here in the Uk is about the same as Canada,if your unlucky ,, and very few independent garages will tackle the M5 as they run scared ,so unless your lucky enough to have a BMW specialist as a good mate then most of the issues is actually dealer only, but if you want to own a thriller M5 the actual potential running costs needs to be highlighted correctly as you did Mark good educational videos as usual

Thanks again Mark! I had my clutch, flywheel and SMG pump done at 58k miles. It cost me close to 11 grand at BMW of San Francisco. My alternator started failing a few months back and finally had it replaced last week for close to $2500. Having the rod bearings done at Matrix Integrated in Portland in a week or two, $2800 estimate with VAC motorsport upgrade or $2950 for OE parts. Going to have Matrix Dinan my car out. I absolutely love my M5 and will probably never sell it. Learned to drive in a 1970 2002 and fell in love with BMWs.....that 2002 is still in the family and hope to finish the restore on it that my brother started 10 years ago. Keep the videos coming!

ruturbo Thanks! I'll look into them. Where are they located?
@alexmartinez280
@alexmartinez280 6 лет назад
ruturbo Yes! Their equal length headers and tune are the best mods. Best header option aside from just hollowing out the stock headers. The power gain getting rid of those primary cars is HUGE. Car is way faster and more responsive. Must Do mod for S85 & S65.

I’m having VAC do my oil analysis next month, and will probably have light mods done, like a tune, intake and some other things

The real challenge today is finding one with less than 100k miles... which is per se a testament to how good they are, despite their issues.

I use to have a m5 and crashed it and trying to see if I should buy the v10 or move on to the newer model tell me what you think it’s important to me
@ECPP

Hi, it depends on what you expect fro the car. If you want something with a bit more soul, better sounds, and , in my opinion, better looks, I would go for the E60. If you want a bit more acceleration, more tech, and better reliability, go with the F10 or newer. For me I prefer the V10 and so thats why I have on in the garage. That being said, the E60 is not as good as a daily driver as the newer M cars so that is also a consideration. Cheers.

Hello. I'm looking to buy e60 m5 too, my dream car tho. Getting all the right information for this car. At first, where should I buy it? Germany or US? And where I need to pay my all attention not to buy totally broken one? I own 535 at the moment, but when i bought it, issues came up like rocks from the sky. But its like 10 times cheaper to fix.

Or they do it on their own and they spend like 4-5K in 100k+ of ownership. sad mofos who aren't willing to open up that V10 and work on it, should not get one.

The old adage for BMW owners. There are those that know how to fix them and those that can afford to fix them. Thankfully I have been the sooner. 😁

2008 owner here. I am one of the unlucky ones who have had 3 out of 5 of these issues just owning it the past 3 years. Spun bearing, vanos pump and idle actuators. Not to mention various other problems along the way not mentioned here. Safe to say this is probably my last BMW I'll own.

It really helps if you wrench your own cars: I'm a Audi guy, but I do really see the attraction to these M4's and M5's. (V8/V10's with F1 heritage). That rod bearing job does not seem to bad ; especially if you have a mid-rise lift / or higher. The valve timing pump should be rebuild able? Its all about enthusiasm: if you really enjoy the car, you won't mind learning about how to service it yourself - as well as some proactive changes/upgrades.
@ECPP
@ECPP 5 лет назад
I. Hold not agr is more. This is totally true and yes the rod bearing job is not bad except getting access to the work and removal of the pan.

If you know how to work on them yourself you could save 12k from the 17k you stated, i say only buy one if you can fix it yourself because the parts are getting cheaper its labor cost that kills your pocket.
