Greyhounds are fondly referred to as 40mph couch potatoes, but how much walking do they actually need? Do you worry about the lack time they spend being active? What exactly is a short walk? i can't speak for every greyhound, but watch this video to find out my thoughts on the matter and hear what works for my dogs. If you need 1;1 support with your greyhound, please find out about my services by visiting my website www.jillwoodmancaninecare.co.uk

My retired racer is more sensitive to heat than cold and lets me know she only wants to walk for 15 to 20 minutes during the summer. I have a large fenced area where she does her morning toileting and 'zoomies' if the mood strikes her. She is definitely livelier when it is cooler. She is smart and sweet, and the best dog ever!

We adopted a retired greyhound a few days ago. Your channel is super useful! Thank you. We have had a placid, friendly boy. We can't leave him in the garden yet for the sake of the local wildlife so goes out on the leash. It's a small garden too so you have reassured me it's not a cruel thing to do. Very reassuring!

We just got our greyhound 3 weeks ago. He's 2,5 years old and I take him out twice a day for an hour long walk each plus usually 3 5-10 minute bathroom breaks, as we don't have a garden. There is always lots of sniffing to ensure mental stimulation because we live in an apartment, even if he is never alone for longer than half an hour. Thank you for your videos, greetings from Germany!

I walk my Grey twice a day , early AM after breakfast, and mid PM total of 10k. Very fortunate i live in rural Ireland and don't have traffic issues . I go at his pace. sometimes i'm the "engine" and often Im the "trailer ". biggest issue is the sniffing !!! he can concentrate on one area for ten minutes but just let him do his own thing. He knows the time for walks and has a mini Zoomie before walks. Love the videos Jill and the captions in the background.🙂

@@russellmurphy347 Envious that your two Greyhounds are good at recall. About the house and the garden mine has no issues, but let nim lose in the field and he completely ignores me. He comes back when he wants to. He's still young at two years old but hope he matures . Continuous success with your Grays sounds like they have landed on their feet with you.👍

Oh yes, i know, the 'endless' sniffing 😅. Had a Lurcher and two ex racing Greyhounds from Ireland. Greyhounds are wonderful dogs and they can be so funny! They were quite healthy, except some teeth problems, and passed at the age of 14 years. You are very lucky to live in rural Ireland. Years back i spent almost a year in Galway. Best time of my life. Greetings from Germany.

@@Manu-ih7zf Hope you have a Gray in Germany. Definitely funny dogs and full of their own idiosyncrasies and mannerisms. yes teeth problems are an issue in Grays, im lucky my Grays teeth are fine. Yes... fortunate to live in rural Ireland and with great neighbours, Occasionally I take my Gray to the local pub/bar where he is treated like a celebrity !!!! Hope you manage to get back to Galway some time in the future .Good Luck and thank you for the reply.

My two greyhounds are so easy going, they love long walks (took it gentle at the start to build up stamina)but they are also very happy to go for a short walk. What I do though is change their routes daily. I am so lucky that I live rural in a part of Germany where I have woods, fields, parks and not far to a town. I don't think we walk the same walk twice even in a month. We have different lengths to adapt to weather conditions. We also have a big garden where they can have a good free run if they want. They are now 10 and 8 but really fit and still go at a fast past and long distances, no sign of oldness yet thank goodness.

Just did a 9 mile hike with my 7 year old female grey. She was dragging a little towards the end, and she was a little stiff the next day. But I think she really enjoys the adventure of being out in wilds. Normally during the week she gets a short morning walk to relieve herself (she won't go in the yard), and then she gets a longer (45 minutes) walk in the afternoon/evening. Before bed she gets another short walk so we don't have any accidents while we're sleeping. She's peed the bed in her sleep before.
@jwcaninecare
@jwcaninecare Год назад
Some of them do enjoy a longer walk :-) its a good idea with a new dog to build up to it gradually, as they may not be used to it to start with

respect, but sounds like you went too long for her outing if she was stiff the next day.

My Grey is, I believe, not a typical Grey. Usually he gets 2 miles in the morning, 3 miles in the evening, but at weekends he probably does 6 miles in the morning and 2 in the evening - brisk walking pace. He's a real walking dog and gets super excited when it's time to go. We do use a long extending lead (8 metres) as he's proven to be 99% okay on that and it does give him much more freedom. I love walking anyway so it's fine for me, but he'd be a bit much for a more sedentary person. I don't know why he's like this - he does sleep the rest of the time, but he refuses to toilet in the garden and so has to go for a walk morning and late afternoon.

My hound thinks walks are a cat-finding mission. I think she's memorised every driveway where cats reside & if we don't see a cat before reaching home again, she will flatly refuse to walk through the gate! :D

Hi! Enjoy your channel. I have had my greyhound for one year - 2 yo female. She acts like she want to walk but after 10 minutes will freeze and not want to walk any further. I have to pull hard on her leash to get her to move and she snaps and screams. She walk with 2 other dogs I rescued that are not greyhounds. She does this everyday! Talked to a behaviorist and he recommended Prozac, but I have not seen any change. Is she just stubborn? I don’t know what to do. Any wisdom you can provide would be wonderful! Thank you.

Jill I enjoyed the video, I have a retired racer got her at 3 now 7 will never give up with her. She exhibits bad aggression when she gets hold of something, whether it be something small or big. She will not let me remove anything but will go into attack mode I then back off. She’s fine when I brush her teeth and good on the lead. Any tips.thank you

@charlotterockel-kennedy8913
My bitch Rosie was the same, she actually bit me and my husband a couple of times. I cured it by offerering something really yummy as a treat and used a word like drop it or out, I would then take whatever she had away then gave it back doing the same again. It worked fast and has stuck since then, even now I only have to say out and she gives me everything straight away. It does take time and patience but greyhounds are very intelligent and pick things up quick. My Rosie is now the sweetest little girl ever and has never growled since. Thank you for not giving up on your girl ❤

Are those dogs suitable to the house with the cat? Considering their hunting background?
@jwcaninecare
@jwcaninecare Год назад
In the UK they are used for racing rather than hunting, but any dog can be keen to chase small furries. Some will live with cats, some wont, so its something you would need to plan carefully with the rescue
