I lost a friend to this same situation, apparently he never wanted to be on his meds and that was the biggest difference, always in denial about the condition. Im glad you are both doing well and keep up with the great attitude.

i played hockey every week with a guy that had schizophrenia. he was fairly ordinary (as in you wouldn't know he had schizophrenia) one week he started to act really strange and admitted to being off his medicine. we got worried and talked to his family but they blew it off literally saying "he probably needs more sleep." about 6 months later he killed himself. really fucked up and sad. condolences to you.
@ceIIardoor

@@shogekimura I'm sorry you went through that. It's heartbreaking that his family seemed to be so naive and/or dismissive of his struggles. Damn.

Understandable, these meds are pretty hard drugs. But the problem is the underlying problem never gets addressed which is mostly mercury poisoning.
@Google_Does_Evil_Now
@Google_Does_Evil_Now Год назад
For the families it's hard because so far the person has always been ok, each time they took a risk it has so far worked out. Until it doesn't. And then there's no undo button, no time machine. It's brutal. The family have seen them go through so many episodes, before meds, before diagnosis, and so far even though there were very difficult times it's so far worked out eventually. It's a very cruel illness in that it affects the individual and those closest to them so much, they want the best, but they aren't doctors. They are just people trying their best. If you have a mental illness please know that the rest of us understand it's just like any other physical illness that can be helped with medicine. The brain is a physical object, the medicine is working on a physical object, the brain. So please don't feel on the outside. Also, 1 in 5 people will have a mental illness in their life, even if it's temporary illness. 1 in 5. That means every family, every workplace, every group of friends, there are lots of people with it. So be kind.

It was heartbreaking the first time my husband had a episode. He was staring at me and looked like he didn’t even know who I was. It was this look of confusion and hopelessness and I didn’t know what to do or how to help.

2:29 she's so smart! Her perception, empathy, it's high. And so is her kindness. Probably sometimes it's not always convenient, but she seems quite patient. I've known a few addicts and the distraction thing can help. Funny stories, them telling them, keeping them thinking and talking about good things. Getting something good done, even small, making a meal, tidying up, simple but positive.

Peace, Love, Light and Blessings to you both. My mom was schizophrenic during a time when she was hospitalized and given shock treatments and lord knows what else. As kids we didn't understand any of it and no one talked about it. She had an awful life. Seeing your videos having episodes is scary for me to watch but it is helping me to understand what may have been going on in her head. Most of my life she was in "an espisode". Constantly. It was horrific. She was born in 1929 and I'm now 68. I don't know how to convey to you - both - how much your channel means to me. For some reason you just came up in my YT feed tonight. Something the Universe wanted me to see : ) So. Thank you. Stay strong and rock on.

You do have a cool hat. Two beautiful people . I take Caplyta and flipped my car in January. I had a schizophrenic partner once, and honestly it was one of the most pleasant and chill relationships I’ve ever been in. When he started to have episodes around me, I had to think on my feet since I had no prior experience being in the presence of someone having an episode. All I knew was that he was likely to feel very paranoid about me having some kind of hidden agenda against him, so I was very careful to listen, gently ask questions, and not directly argue anything he was saying but instead gently remind him of things that happened earlier that day to establish basic info about why he was at my place, that he had chosen to spend the evening with me but was free to leave at any time. I also made sure to ask him constantly if there was anything I could do to offer proof that I have no hidden intentions and only want to support him. When I felt it was safe for me to pull out my phone without causing suspicion, I quickly looked up tips for how to support him and then proceeded to follow those-I’m happy to say that they worked! Once I was able to earn his trust about me being on his side and totally there for him, we began to unpack the delusions he was having and I was very careful to just listen and respond with words of empathy that neither confirmed or denied the scenarios he thought were happening. I would first say something like “that sounds really scary, I’m so sorry you’re having to deal with that threat right now.” Then I would say that I want to help him stay safe and protect anyone else who’s in danger, and ask him what he thinks that would involve. The more I got him to break down the perceived situation and examine the reasons why he was led to believe it was going to happen, I would start to find little entry points for bringing in contextual info and past experiences that I knew he would be capable of agreeing with, and I was very careful to do this in a way where the goal wasn’t to flat out dismiss the scenario he was fearing, but to offer little examples of how things might turn out differently and hopefully would. I found that, going forward, as long as I took this approach with him during his episodes, they would typically wind down surprisingly fast (usually within and hour or two). I also made sure to never point out that the delusions he was having were delusions, even after the episode had blown over, both out of respect and also because I as a non-schizophrenic have no idea what that adjustment back to baseline reality is like, and didn’t want to assume that the delusion from the episode had suddenly ceased to be true for him. Anyways, I’ve rambled too long. All this is to say, I hope that others who find themselves in this situation one day are able to do a little research and just show up with an open heart and a willingness to listen and adapt to the needs of someone having an experience that you simply won’t be able to relate to. Assume that you don’t know what it’s like, be transparent about that, emphasize that you don’t claim to understand any of the stuff that they are insisting only they have any knowledge of, and ask the person having the episode to help you understand whatever they would like you to know about what’s going on, and simply offer to accommodate any needs they might have at that particular moment (ie physical proximity, lighting, sound, location, topics of conversation, terms of engagement, boundaries, etc). And obviously, as the person who’s not having the episode, be sure to maintain safety, but don’t call too much attention to that objective, as that kind of language can make the person feel as though you’re threatening to control or restrain them. And lastly, don’t be scared. The delusions the person is having can be very disturbing, but focus on acceptance and cooperation, and you’d be surprised at how swiftly and peacefully these episodes can blow over often times. Once I understood how they worked and what needed to be done on my part, it was honestly not a big deal and just became routine. Just show the same amount of respect you normally would and allow them to be as autonomous as possible so long as everyone is safe. Only call for outside professional help if the situation becomes dangerous, and dangerous doesn’t mean scary or disturbing. Dangerous means dangerous-palpable threats or attempts at physically harmful behavior. I know we all have our boundaries and many people will feel like they shouldn’t have to take responsibility in this kind of situation if they don’t want to, but in my opinion, I think we could all benefit from putting our comfort aside sometimes and do what we can to help others around us live as functional a life as possible. We owe it to ourselves as a whole to be the kind of person we would want to have around in case we ever needed that kind of help.

Awe that’s sad tho her response was “not scared because she’s a bigger person”. How about because episodes don’t make him “dangerous” or abusive, like the media and stereotypes portray schizophrenics to be.

@amandaphilpott2944 2 года назад
Thank you, but that’s also not a fair comment. Some people with schizophrenia do get physical. I’m not scared of him because I have no reason to be. On the second hand. My father with schizophrenia was explosive and did get physical sometimes. He’s not dangerous because he can’t help it. I didn’t say anything about him being dangerous or abusive. Thank you though.
