for me, New Blood as a brand represents a very honest view on how to develop, market and sell games, and that is just having fun. i can feel the fun they had while adding a new, crazy weapon into ULTRAKILL, or when they do a bit about the steam deck on the PC gaming show, or when they released the gloomwood EA a day early... they are a very commited and talented group that understand how to create a succesful product where the consummer can see the hard effort put into it.
the thing is, they are publishers, what (i think) makes them different is they help the developers, instead of limiting what they can and can't do and controlling all of their actions
I don't usually watch breakdown videos, but this one caught my eye. Didn't even realize it didn't have hundreds of thousands of videos until you mentioned you were smaller. Really well put together!
honestly Hakita is one of the luckiest pickups New Blood has under thier wing as a publisher if they are planning to branch out into other genres: the man has practically become an Avatar in the nickelodeon cartoon sense: a master of all the game design elements as every secret level he's put into Ultrakill so far has been a perfect level sized attempt at a completely different genre, from a knockoff of the Witness to fucking legally distinct CRASH BANDICOOT but with V1 replacing the spinning marsupial. between New Blood's varied talent and Hakita's knack for just letting the player doing whatever with the tools he gives them, New Blood as a whole are a publisher to watch with as hopeful eyes as the Crosscode devs and Larian.
Ultrakill is amazing. I believe this is the 5th video I've mentioned it in on my channel, with the first two being entirely dedicated to Ultrakill (full video on act 1 and one on act 2, which another planned for act 3). Its the first NB game I played, and I'm so glad I found it, or I wouldn't have quite the obsession with all their game that I now do. Hakita's secret levels are undoubtedly one of my favorite parts of the entire game.
New Blood have quickly become one of my favourite publishers in the gaming landscape so it’s always awesome to see new videos covering how awesome they are! Great video man!
Dave Oshry is a goober. I say this as a sincere compliment. New Blood will have to murder a bag of puppies right now to dent their rep with their fan base. Love those guya
Why do you say that? I'd say that as a small company that people hold to a really high standard, they're more vulnerable to controversies than someone like Nintendo with the historical precedent, PR, HR and money to BS their way out of anything that happens.
@Echelon730 Which I'm saying might not have the effect on PR that you say; while I do appreciate their being a smaller company with a more personal connection to their fans, it also means they have less wiggle room if someone gets in trouble for something (especially cartoonish villainy). Big companies like Nintendo or Pokemon have the wealth, nostalgia factor, and clueless fanboys to blow off most issues, and the PR to minimize the amount of BS that gets publicized. I say this because I've been playing a game called Limbus Company, and the Project Moon company (only slightly bigger than New Blood AFAIK) has recently been through a couple major controversies, including one of the illustrators being fired over some old tweets (turns out gender politics in Korea is about as much of a mess as it is in the US, if not more).
@KnakuanaRka that is too long I am not going to read that. Dave and the New Blood crew are awesome and doing a great job, and I wish them all the success in the world.
New Blood pretty much became a popular publisher that gives a lot of stuff for otherwise indie devs to work with, all the while keeping the devs' integrity and creative freedom, it gives this mix of indie creative vibe and of genuinely high quality game making.
Awesome video! The only thing you might want to work on is the noise removal used as it comes off as excessive at times. When you are recording make sure you have your mic and yourself in the same position to ensure consistency with audio
The existence of publishers like New Blood or Nightdive are THE only reason i keep playing modern games today The are the living proof that you don't need to make photorealistic open-world generic RPG ect.. to make money It's a huge influence for me as a (try to be) game developer !
Only familiar with Nightdive’s System Shock involvement, but seeing them mentioned in the same comment as New Blood makes me want to check out more of their work. Thanks for commenting and checking out the video :)
@@CNRMRY_YTYes, i personally loved all the remasters they did and the System Shock remake is one of the best immersive sim i've ever played ! Great video btw, i learn many things about New Blood (the web adress easter eggs is just hilarious, i love it 😂) and it makes me curious about they lesser know games (at least that i didn't play yet) like Faith and Gloomwood !
@@CNRMRY_YTokay so basically you play as this guy in a scuba diving suit who was taking a power nap, you start killing demons, you kill demons a lot, other things happen sometimes like this robotic dude going "you breaking my stuff isn't in the top 10 things i wanted as a christmas gift tbh", but killing demons is the big thing that matters the game is just complete garbage, pretty much unplayable, it doesn't even have a single big john voice line
Going from the very tightly scripted body of the video to the off the cuff outro section was a kicker and I really appreciate how genuine it is. Good shit.
Great video. I have been a New Blood fan for a while now after playing dusk and seeing the whole company meme so hard on twitter and the pc game show, but had never heard Dave's stance on crunch. He doesn't just seem to prefer his devs don't crunch, he almost expects them not to for their own sake.
You said you're not a good 'writer' but for a channel with 5k subs this went above and beyond any expectations I had for this video. Clear and concise, good pacing, interesting topic - pretty damn good video. Hope you get more recognition down the line.
Shame that all those big RU-vidrs who claim they care about gaming, never seem to mention this publisher. They always stick to their photorealistic tacti-cool shooters because "ew low poly"
Great publisher! I hope more like them emerge, especially in today's big publisher environment. I've been one of the core members of a growing game studio and one of my biggest fears was/is being swallowed up by a big publisher that eventually shuts us down after the bad decisions that they force us to make. It's a classic tale that's been repeated over and over since the very early days of video games.
This is a good video! Its nice that New Blood cares so much about quality of games and health of game devs. ULTRAKILL is my favorite game rn and im excited to try New Blood's other games.
Man, I loved this video a lot. I noticed in a few spots your audio was muffled, but otherwise, this is great content. Perhaps during editing you could go through your audio and re-record the spots where your hand gets in the way of the mic, or you turn your head the wrong way and all that. Feel like it would give your videos the polish that such great work and tireless hours of research deserve.
Thx for this vid. I am not into shooters and i do have a huge library already.still i consider getting falling aces because it looks so darn cool.knowing the publisher is cool too definitly helps.
The industry is definitely being carried by publishers publishing quirky indie games (not the people who published the sinking city, fuck those people) But yeah, very good company policy and views on crunch/unions in this studio, I'm not much for boomer shooters but I'll keep them on my radar and I'm 100% going to check out their non boomer shooters without a doubt.
i thinm devolver digital is doin work these days, they have so many releases up and coming, i was just a beta tester for karmazoo, a game im personally excited for! games like cult of the lamb, hotlime miami, GOD DAMN FRIKIN GATO ROBOTO! and so many more, devolver digital feels like the new, fresh and quality, while the dev giants that have been leading the gaming industry for years just kinda rusted, their games are garbage, soulless, and just boring, ive never even played any good AAA games accept read dead 2 because i was just born too late to experience the good ones, and shooters are just boring for me, accept overkill, that games is crack
gloom wood is my first new blood title and my god its so good to the point that i restarted the game multiple times cause of how little content there is at the moment but either way itssssssssssssss sooooooooo goood im excited what these two devs continue to pump out plus they seem active on there steam forums i made a couple posts and they instantly reply and are super nice
Their games are all really incredible, the only one that doesn’t feel full right now is Gloomwood. What there is in that game is incredible, it just feels a little short for the price tag. Devs got big ambitions though and he’s been super transparent, plus since he’s working cooperatively with D Szymanski (Dusk, Iron Lung, Chop Goblins, etc) I don’t see any reason why they wont deliver.
yeah it kinda makes sense why its slow as its just the two of them so there releasing bits chunk by chunk but the game is fantastic and i really pray they make a map editor or give mod support@@CNRMRY_YT
great video! I will say from 11:51 - 13:11 it could have been reduced to a few sentences as it feels jarring going from a pretty well-made chuck of the main video to instantly swapping to a rambling section. otherwise it is a great video and I can say it was cool hearing about new blood's past
bruv new blood interactive are creating some universe that their games are connected to each others like a hivemind a multiverse.new blood expanded universe NBEU
The good thing is that there games have more replay ability than most triple aaa games and for a good price as well most of there games are like 20 bucks
New blood and devolver digital are two publishers that prove that a brand still has real power if it is used right and not molested the same way the AAA versions have done.
I get that Polish is hard but please, read Szymański as Shyh-mahn-ski not Zymanski, it takes me out of the video like a hit to the head with a sledgehammer, and the video is otherwise great
First off, sorry about the essay. When you mentioned how Mr. Oshry is against crunch, it instantly brought to mind how Hakita had to do crunch time in order to reach the promised Ultrakill Act 2 release date, as on a Twitter post (or whatever it is meant to be referred to as now) he said that he "spent the entirety of the last 24 hours either vomiting or sleeping" after he had published the update. Now, I am unsure as to whether or not it was New Blood who forced crunch time on to him or simply Hakita's dedication to the game, but I just hope that Hakita'll not have to go through that hell again and am alarmed as to how you didn't include this tidbit into the video. It's cool if you weren't aware of this, as this might be some sort of obscure inner Ultrakill community thing. Wonderful video nonetheless, I'll add a plus one to your subscriber count.
Much appreciated with the sub. I’ve been following Ultrakill especially for quite some time and I do remember that, but like I said in the video I think it’s more in the vein of developers not wanting to let down their fans and people who play their games. Again, there’s no way to verify if this was encouraged or forced by new blood, or entirely hakita’s decision, but I’d rather choose to believe that new blood isn’t responsible, and they do truly stand by what they say. Either way, it’s a shame what devs go through, forced or not.
I do remember him tweeting something about that. However, I think Hakita followed up with something along the lines of "This isn't me complaining, this is me pointing to the stands.". If that is the case, that would be incredibly based. If I am wrong, please feel free to let me know.
Ever since I played Ultrakill I’ve dived deeper into New Bloods library and I’ve loved every game I’ve played from them. The mix of great games and awesome people behind it is a sight to behold and I appreciate them so much.
The only thing that New Blood could do to really improve/make a name for themselves beyond their current work is to release a multiplayer game. Not a campaign that happens to have a multiplayer mode, but a multiplayer-focused title, maybe an Arena FPS since they're good at boomer shooters.
This was really interesting to watch as I am currently writing a Bachelors thesis on retro-style 3D games. Since I love Dusk and Amid Evil, I chose to focus especially on games published by New Blood!
Personally, I think, as great as some of the games involved are, Newblood - and the boomer shooter throwback genre as a whole - is setting itself up for failure. With so many of the games being in an infinite state of early access and especially the weirdly incestuous relationship seen between developers and people who are reviewing their games, I can't help but feel it's not going to last.
I thin we should be lighter on game developers, this is because it lets publishers fuck game devs over and then lets them scapegoat them after sabotaging the project
They said they wanted to do car combat stuff!!!! There’s also an unofficial fan project (I believe it’s called new blood cart, you can search it in twitter) where it’s like a Mario kart style racing game with new blood characters. Looks hilarious.
Fair idea, but their game isn't impactful enough to even stir up conversation among the randoms I like to hang with. So how is it gonna change a market?
Passing the word along about any who chose to stand in opposition to the rampant standard practice of profit chasing at the expense and exploitation of others is a thumbs up from me. I can only hope that if they find success that it doesn't lead to the changing of those core values as you mentioned in the video. Something that has happen to far too many others.
True! A very wide majority of people don’t play/don’t have access to a lot of the indie market. Take console players. They get the big ones… a couple devolved games here and there, dead cells, some other stuff but the majority of it is locked to pc.
I think New Blood is amazing bc of what they're trying to do in the industry! Also the video was very good, nicely edited and written! dont be so hard on yourself :D
Need more videos about Psilocybin mushrooms, please. It is important. If you do it right, you will experience one of the most beautiful thing ha human being can experience. For some the ego will die bit by bit, and for others a big chunk of the ego will die at once. There will be no ego who can handle such a experience. You will experience ones. One with with everything. At least 5 gram of magic mushies and you can't do anything but to take of. If it is to little mushies you will be able to resist the take of easily. Do it at home first lying down in bed and the music turned on. i would do that the first 1 to 2 hours
Much appreciated! I've considered it, but a lot of publishers are so big at this point that they've lost some of their identity. Maybe some more in the future though, sounds like fun. Thanks for the comment :)
I discovered Ultrakill when it was just a public demo. Now when I know more about dev and publishers, I have a feeling on this winter sale on steam I'm gonna get all New Blood games. Mad respect to both New Blood and devs who work with them.
I was pretty early to Ultrakill as well, not quite that early though. I started playing just before greed released, I just only play when there’s new stuff rather than consistently which is why I’m so bad at it. As for the other NB games, they’re all honestly incredible. It’s pretty hard to pick a favorite for me, gloomwood has the least content (so far), but I think in the future it’s going to have a LOT, and what’s there now is really good.
