There were so many horses needed to draw carriages, that the city ship[ed in thousands of tonnes of apples often to feed them all. Therefore newspapers called the city "The Big Apple".

​​@@lucinae8510 Did you just make that up? The first instance of "the big apple" being popularized was due to horse racing, which was very lucrative in NY. Competitors and gamblers would come for "the big apple", as in, the large and appealing prize winnings. Then the phrase was brought back in the 1970's during a tourism advertising campaign.

Its based on Washington Irving's novel about NYC. NYC has been nicknamed Gotham for over 150 years and the Batman comic is based on NJ & lower Manhattan with its Gothic/Art Deco skyscrapers.

It is, abstractly. The use of "Gotham" in British culture is equivalent to how Americans might refer to "Hicksville" ... Irving and his buddies were being sarcastic

@@ginandromeda1618 Are you familiar with the idea of a "hillbilly"? ... a person who lives off the land, with little income, in a mountain region? A "hick" is like a "hillbilly". So "Hicksville" is a town full of people who aren't very educated or cultured. Now, New York City is NOT that, but Washington Irving was trying to insult other intellectuals by accusing them of acting like that, and sarcastically equating NYC with "Gotham" ... the traditional term for "Hicksville" (remember, in the early 19th Century, "cultured" people in US cities would still use lots of British phrases) Irving was very influential in American literature, so the term caught on as an ironic nickname for NYC. Eventually, American culture drifted far enough away from British culture that the original connection was lost, and "Gotham" was just thought of as a "nickname" for NYC, without many people knowing where it came from. Phew. I basically just repeated the information in the Short. Hope that helped.

Batman’s Gotham is based off New York, AND Chicago. That’s the only connection Chicago has to Gotham.
