Follow me at Twitter! / hensama24 Continuing the series, I take a look at all the changes Nicktoons made to Dragon Ball Z Kai when it broadcast in the early 2010's. This video covers the first half of the Namek Arc. Episodes 17-23.
@@mattwolf7698 Opposite, honestly. Dragon Ball as a whole is aimed at children. But Kai in particular censored a lot of things due to airing at a 9AM timeslot over there, as well as because of DB having such a young fanbase around the world. The anime as a whole (Z included) is also censored in comparison to the manga.
@@Essu_if you mean dbs? True, but dbz and the OG DB ? mostly just aimed for teens or pre-teens.. or just the little of boys who are mature enough to where they can handle it (including the bloody stuff.)
Goku's telepathy only happened twice. Dude's head bump must still be effecting him. He forgot he can do that. It didn't just effect him, it effected Piccolo too and he forgot he could grow big until Gohan reminded him. It effected everyone to forget Launch. It even effected Toriyama to forget a lot of things. They must eat a lot of Senzu to only be having like 5 at a time for each fight. I remember back in Dragonball where Korrin had like a whole pot of Senzu just lying around.
Right? I've always had issues with that....I mean with a few years warning they had a nice bag for the cell fight. When cooler came they had one on command it just got torched. Running up to Namek the first time Goku got a nice bag on command...then they just disappeared.
@@JackedUpEntertainment Yeah, some of the lines for the Nicktoons version were still too much for the Toonzai version. The Nicktoons version technically came before the uncut DVD and still had Yamamoto music into the beginning of the Android Saga.
6:52 That change makes absolutely no damn sense 22:10 This one is even more silly, not only flat out unnecessary but it sounds so unnecessarily sad to because they're implying his mom's dead
I think a lot of the edits made to the Nicktoons version were so they didn't have to re-edit it for the Toonzai version. When they changed the music because of the Yamamoto scandal, some of the lines even become uncensored on Nicktoons like Frieza going "Well, if you'd rather die than help, I can oblige" and Krillin going "Are you TRYING to get us both killed?" GT even aired on Nicktoons, at some point, and it was less censored. It did the old Toonami thing of removing blood in motion but still showed red blood that was on people's faces and static and the death threat talk was unchanged.
I'm honestly shocked it was Nickelodeon that got Kai and not Cartoon Network, considering CN is what pushed DBZ in the west. What a bizarre situation imo. It stood out in the lineup.
Watching DBZ Kai on Nicktoons was weird which is probably why I didn't do that often. I noticed that the resolution was also different from the Uncut. I guess this is why I always bought the dvds from Funimation.
It's not so much that the resolution is different. It's moreso that there was no HD channel for NIcktoons, so every upload of every episode recorded on Nicktoons was recorded in 480i.
Reminds me of the early toonami edited run on cartoon network with the Ocean group dub . And the Nicktoons broadcast was during the toonami cancelled era from 2008 to 2012
The part where Bulma gets mad makes the least amount of sense. How is saying rat poison any better it sounds like something they'd want to avoid a topic on. I say don't censor it at all.
*Worse than that was to change original dragon ball background music. They totally destroyed the feeling with that. Fortunately, we saw it earlier, years before arrived to the US.*
Interesting fact Did you guys know that dbz Kai was originally going to air on Cartoon Network but every single time Funimation called the Cartoon Network studio they didn’t pick up
what they did is actually pretty good, this censorship isn't excessive like four kids did to one piece. It's still enjoyable for children without being blatantly stupid.
It makes sense that they cover Bulma's tits, but come on...during the time of DBZ the ecchi decreased, it's not like it was going to come out completely hahaha
@@Speed4Runsthe only one that are more worst is the latin Studios one because they have a weird censorship on every shows and movies, like censoring a corpse on a non-family friendly types and the kids from there likes watching inappropriated stuffs like violence and horror contents and their parents doesn't mind what they watch
i remember watching dbz on nicktoons with my friend and her siblings when i was a kid. i specifically remember when vegeta is in his healing vat thing (yeah i have no idea what its called) and they put underwear on vegeta . when i learned hes actually naked in the original i was shocked! 😮
"When we see Bulma with a beer can, the liquid and branding is changed so she's having a sports drink. Maybe Capsule Corp. branded sports drink? After all, she is the face of the Capsule Corporation."
Great video, as always! 3:36 - 3:54 I'm pretty sure I like the edited lines better in this case. Sometimes after traumatic events, people use some ambiguous language instead of being explicit, so it seems a bit more realistic to me (though of course I'm sure the uncut lines are more accurate to the Japanese version). 6:54 - 7:06 I wonder if this was an instance where they accidentally swapped the lines between uncut and edited. Both are kid friendly, but I've seen the word "tail" be used in place of a** in fiction. Either way, I like the edited line more because, well, Saiyans have tails.
Believe it or not if Goku never stopped Krillin for ending Vegeta life he wouldn't be where he's today. And its still amazing that Vegeta was at the mercy hand of Krillin.
10 years before this on Cartoon Network they had no problem with some blood and talking about killing, dying, etc. Yet they'd have Rocko on at the same time which had literal chunks and gore in the first season more than like, anything in DBZ lmao
Keep in mind the networks didn't edit the show for television, Funimation did. That's why the movies got away with blood and mentioning death all the time on Nicktoons.
@@Supersayainpikmin they just used the old tv y7 masters for the movies that funi had laying around for toonami and thought that was good enough without looking much I to it.
I think some of the changed lines are actually better. Vegeta calling Kwi a "freak show" sounds funnier, and it makes more sense for Kwi to say that Vegeta has his tail handed to him. Same for Freeza saying "They can be so fragile." sounds more unsettling.
Some of the dialogues censorship are kinda dumb, I mean what's wrong calling someone "Genius"? Goku was just thinking Dr. Briefs for the spaceship he made for him in that way
Blue popo was a 4kids exclusive. Nicktoons had black popo for the entirety of its run. Also I never heard that nickelodeon translated to that? The name is based on old 1800's theaters (Nickelodeons) that you payed a nickel for. The latter of the word odeon being a greek word for a building that held musical festivals and various activities in in ancient greece and rome.
And this is why anime thats aimed at teens shouldn't be put on a kids block. Also seriously they edited the word butt out? Nick used to have a (bad) show called "The Buttugly Martians"
While I did watch the show as a kid, I still think it's weird when a show made for pre-teens and teens is reworked for children that so much censoring is needed for it. Like I could see a PG rating or even a PG-13 rating, but a Y7? That's just a lot of work for what's not really made for that demographic
I don’t think Nicktoons did anything , I’m pretty sure it was Funimation since they are the North American distributors. They’ve been trying to tone down DBZ Forever, Nicktoons were their excuse.
This is not the original dialogue from the saga. Kai is the watered down version of Dragonball Z, which means what Nick shows is a double watered down version.
exactly what i thought watching this without knowing what kai is, i thought it was a separate thing like GT, seems like it is a title change specifically for nick, is this right?
Please can someone tell me the title of the song at the beginning of the video? I've been looking for it for a while in various Dragon Ball games on the PlayStation, but I haven't had success yet... does anyone know? Thank you
Increíble dato, y por eso fue también las ganas de CN de desprestigiar db, si ésta fue mala por la censura, CN se encargó de hacerla peor por sus intenciones bastante cuestionables ¡ahora todo cuadra...!!
