It's probably good to notice when you're feeling unhappy in case there is something positive you can do to fix the situation. However, sometimes it's just a matter of enduring a tough situation. You can still make yourself a promise that if you discover a practical solution to your problems, then you will explore it.

No, it's about expectations rather than hope. Do you see the subtle difference? If you expect something, you will be angry when you are let down. Hope shouldn't make you angry in case of fail. The true hope, at the very least. Luke Skywalker (the new hope) wouldn't make people angry if he failed, he would make them more sad (and death, in consequence... heheh)

Pessimism is the cure for anger and optimism for depression. You need both in balance to see life for what it really is and be happy with it.
@FarewellApollo
@FarewellApollo 7 лет назад
couldn't agree more! Both are necessary to maintain a healthy mindset. When faced depression, my thoughts were "nothing will ever go my way and I shouldn't have any goals because they won't be fulfilled." After getting out of that mindset and seeing things for what they really are, I've realized how good of a thing hope and optimism can be when used in moderation. We need to use optimism when looking at our goals, otherwise we will never achieve anything and never find out what we could have done because pessimism tells us "it isn't gonna happen, so just give up" which is a very unhealthy way to live.

Gr8 Incarnate but there are small examples in everyday life where optimism can be very useful and get you that initial motivation to actually try and attempt to make things better for yourself. Optimism is a big part of motivation. An example would be when you want to ask someone out on a date. Pessimism would tell you "they're not gonna like you. What's the point in trying? They're gonna say no." So you would never actually find out for sure what they would have said. It takes a bit of optimism and thinking "maybe they'll say yes!" to get the courage to take chances. And even if they say no, you could at least say you tried and not have to live with not knowing what they would have said.
@FarewellApollo
@FarewellApollo 7 лет назад
Gr8 Incarnate You're right, that is a possibility as well. Asking someone out means that you put yourself in a vulnerable position to the possibility of getting hurt via rejection. There is always a risk with that sort of thing. As with anything in life, one can become resentful towards something that has hurt and scarred them before in the past. It's really up to the individual to let something like that effect their choices or not. One must ask themselves if the risk is worth the reward. The last part of your comment rings very true. The optimistic viewpoint is a tool to be used, but not alone. Diversity is very important, and this is no exception. Optimism is one of many tools at one's disposal to build their life on. It is really up to the individual to decide what they want to use and when and where they want to use it.

@isabellabihy8631

I highly agree. Not having an expectation on an outcome means you're settling with the results you are getting. The video isn't quite exacting in the language. But then language is prone not to be exact. Nonetheless, I find the idea interesting that failed expectations (it will work out) are the cause of anger. Avoiding anger could mean communicating your expectations beforehand which might help to put them in perspective. Did you know: For pessimists and disaster thinkers black is a bright color. :-)

This reminds me of a sermon I heard years ago and to some extent what a therapist said years before that. The therapist said, have no expectations and you will stop being disappointed. That made me furious, but he's right. The sermon was you decide ahead of time. You can decide ahead of time that there will be traffic on your way to and from work because there always is. You can either keep getting angry about it, which does no good, or you can decide there will be traffic, and while I'm sitting there, I can listen to an audiobook or something else that edifies my mind.

This is so true. In my 19 years of living things have never turned out the way I expect them to. No day is the same and every encounter is different. To be hopeful here doesn’t mean optimistic it means putting faith in a world that is constantly proving you wrong and it shows you it will never live up to your expectations of it. And yet you still somehow don’t accept this reality and make the lives of people around you harder than they need to be. But an addition: Don’t be pessimistic, be realistic and patient. Always

@Tormentality
@Tormentality 7 лет назад
UnpredictableSB I don't know. To be an existentialist, doesn't one need to accept the absurd and then create a superficial reason for being? I am probably way off since I don't know the precise philosophical definitions of these terms. I was just reading wiki's definition of existentialism... I am not sure the difference between nihilism and existentialism, so this is interesting: Although nihilism and existentialism are distinct philosophies, they are often confused with one another. A primary cause of confusion is that Friedrich Nietzsche is an important philosopher in both fields, but also the existentialist insistence on the inherent meaninglessness of the world. Existentialist philosophers often stress the importance of Angst as signifying the absolute lack of any objective ground for action, a move that is often reduced to a moral or an existential nihilism. A pervasive theme in the works of existentialist philosophy, however, is to persist through encounters with the absurd, as seen in Camus' The Myth of Sisyphus ("One must imagine Sisyphus happy"),[40] and it is only very rarely that existentialist philosophers dismiss morality or one's self-created meaning: Kierkegaard regained a sort of morality in the religious (although he wouldn't himself agree that it was ethical; the religious suspends the ethical), and Sartre's final words in Being and Nothingness are "All these questions, which refer us to a pure and not an accessory (or impure) reflection, can find their reply only on the ethical plane. We shall devote to them a future work."
@exbladex99

Yes pessimism can work. A lot of people also become cynical as a replacement for anger. The reality is, there's a better way: manage your expectations. Not really pessimism. Optimism with a sense of pollyanna, looking at cup half full, without the cup half full... More like the cup is 10% full and you're happy with that. Used to be riddled with anger. Then I became cynically skeptical, bitter, pessimistic, still angry. Years later now I'm an low-expectation optimist with an aggressive drive but now calm and healthily skeptical without cynicism. Always with a sense of acceptance and thinking of everything through the lens of evolution: "well this is how it turned out, because this is what survived."

If this doesn't paste properly, please look up "A Shropshire Lad" :-) A. E. Housman (1859-1936). A Shropshire Lad. 1896. LXII. Terence, this is stupid stuff ‘TERENCE, this is stupid stuff: You eat your victuals fast enough; There can’t be much amiss, ’tis clear, To see the rate you drink your beer. But oh, good Lord, the verse you make, 5 It gives a chap the belly-ache. The cow, the old cow, she is dead; It sleeps well, the horned head: We poor lads, ’tis our turn now To hear such tunes as killed the cow. 10 Pretty friendship ’tis to rhyme Your friends to death before their time Moping melancholy mad: Come, pipe a tune to dance to, lad.’ Why, if ’tis dancing you would be, 15 There’s brisker pipes than poetry. Say, for what were hop-yards meant, Or why was Burton built on Trent? Oh many a peer of England brews Livelier liquor than the Muse, 20 And malt does more than Milton can To justify God’s ways to man. Ale, man, ale’s the stuff to drink For fellows whom it hurts to think: Look into the pewter pot 25 To see the world as the world’s not. And faith, ’tis pleasant till ’tis past: The mischief is that ’twill not last. Oh I have been to Ludlow fair And left my necktie God knows where, 30 And carried half way home, or near, Pints and quarts of Ludlow beer: Then the world seemed none so bad, And I myself a sterling lad; And down in lovely muck I’ve lain, 35 Happy till I woke again. Then I saw the morning sky: Heigho, the tale was all a lie; The world, it was the old world yet, I was I, my things were wet, 40 And nothing now remained to do But begin the game anew. Therefore, since the world has still Much good, but much less good than ill, And while the sun and moon endure 45 Luck’s a chance, but trouble’s sure, I’d face it as a wise man would, And train for ill and not for good. ’Tis true, the stuff I bring for sale Is not so brisk a brew as ale: 50 Out of a stem that scored the hand I wrung it in a weary land. But take it: if the smack is sour, The better for the embittered hour; It should do good to heart and head 55 When your soul is in my soul’s stead; And I will friend you, if I may, In the dark and cloudy day. There was a king reigned in the East: There, when kings will sit to feast, 60 They get their fill before they think With poisoned meat and poisoned drink. He gathered all that springs to birth From the many-venomed earth; First a little, thence to more, 65 He sampled all her killing store; And easy, smiling, seasoned sound, Sate the king when healths went round. They put arsenic in his meat And stared aghast to watch him eat; 70 They poured strychnine in his cup And shook to see him drink it up: They shook, they stared as white’s their shirt: Them it was their poison hurt. -I tell the tale that I heard told. 75 Mithridates, he died old.

Or you do some research on ayahuasca (plant medicine) and work with our psychological issues, by going through our emotional and mental fields. And do the clearing work of the distortion energy in the emotional field, calling these energy patterns to be resolved and dissolved, as well as working with the mental field, aka the mind-field, from a similar idea of both fields having energies built into them by our interaction with our reality as well as other humans :)

I agree with this video and I think a lot of people misunderstood this because this actually failed to acknowledge the philosophy which stems it- Stoicism. As an average person who practices stoicism in my daily life, I understood the message. It's not about *expecting the worst*, it's about accepting that it isn't possible to have everything under our control which means that there are simply some things that won't go the way we want it to be all the time BUT instead of trying to control those things that are beyond our control, we should focus instead of how we approach and react to these unexpected, inevitable, unfortunate scenarios that will sure come our way. This video only covered the part where we should be a bit realistic about the limits of our control and how the world works and I wished they also provided the optimistic part and the practical respond to these unfortunate events.

Pessimism isn't the cure for anything. Realism is the cure. If you rationalize things then you won't get mad that it happened or sad that it will happen, you understand why it will happen and accept it

ObiJuanKenobi3 not sure it works. realism is good after things happened and youre calming down. not so good to foresee every possible problem at every possible turn
@Gimpactx
@Gimpactx 7 лет назад
ObiJuanKenobi3 I would disagree even though realism is the most rational; the topic is dealing with an emotion/reaction. Specifically, I believe this addresses the deep optimistic idealism rooted behind the anger which in a practical way is effectively lessened with the counter to that optimism: pessimism(cynicism may be a better word). I personally understand the analysis, though I believe nihilism is an even better cure to anger, though a root for depression. But if you are able to go one step further(one step back) and accept the relativity in the world, along with the irony and dissonance, I believe that that is the next step in cognitive evolution. Perhaps one day we will even come to understand the works of the universe, but for now, the term 'realism' is probably more ambiguous than optimism or pessimism, simply because of our cognitive limitations and lack of knowledge as individuals. Of course, "true" nihilism remains in theory yet not in practice, and the point of the video I believe was not to give you a pragmatic way of solving anger, but an idealistic approach to the problem. In turn, your perspective on life can change how you are, but not what you are completely.
@FelipeKana1
@FelipeKana1 7 лет назад
Siwar Rivers I agree with you. However, I think you mixed stuff on: "I believe was not to give you a pragmatic way of solving anger, but an idealistic approach to the problem" I think the video does gives a pragmatic approach, (expect the worse, so you can be thankful for the best when it comes and not surprised and angry when the worst comes: pessimism) and the "realism" proposal is more of a idealistic approach. Also important, but belonging to another level.

This was a very interesting perspective - I agree that in order to manage anger we need to adjust our expectations. Part of how I do this is to check my "self-talk" for blaming or negative statements because those are usually the culprit :) Anger can be controlled when you have the willingness to learn how to change it. That takes real courage but we also have to not punish ourselves for the struggle. Anger is a tough emotion to manage especially when you grow up with raging or abusive parents. We are not at fault for our anger - but we are responsible for it's impact on others. I hope this helps :)

I have no idea why people are so inclined to the words optimistic and pessimistic as if it is relaying the meaning of happy and sad. All this video is trying to highlight is to not have your head in the clouds and ground yourself on this imperfect Earth. As soon as this angry person sees that life isn't so perfect, he isn't becoming dead inside or sad, he is simply seeing things as they are without any emotional attachment or judgement on how they "should" be or how he "wants" them to be. Ultimately through this seemingly "pessimistic" choice of thinking, he finds inner happiness.

I read quite a few of the comments on this video. It's normal that you find the video frustrating, funny or simply disagree with it. The reason is because it does not go deep enough to explain how and why being "pessimistic" can help you being less angry. So almost everyone will miss the point. The point lies in deep philosophical theory and practice. In Stoicism (ancient Greek philosophy about resilience and self-control) the practice of "controlled meditation of evil" (Premeditatio Malorum) is fundamental. In very simple terms it means to meditate on bad things that could happen to you or the life around you with the purpose of preparing your mind about how it will respond. Therefore, growing more mentally prepared and resilient. For example if you are heading to the airport, imagine that your flight will be delayed or cancelled. How would you respond? What are the options that you should go through? Maybe asking for an alternative flight, or getting the train to go to your destination. In a safe and controlled state, you can evaluate your options. Then if the worst actually does happen, you are more prepared to face it and be rational instead of getting angry and yelling at the airport staff. There are many resources online to read about this practice and Stoicism in general. I recommend to anyone who does not agree with this video, to spend some time going through this Stoic practice. Then, the point of this video, will become clear and understandable.

The more I think about this the more I realize how intertwined expectations are to anger, and more importantly happiness. Initially my reaction was that anger was a physical and hormonal response, so just hit the gym and tucker yourself out to quell those feelings (as I have been doing.) But then I realized perhaps it's because when I do go to spar, or lift weights, or whatever I am faced with inexorable truth in my abilities. You cannot pretend to curl a 100 lb dumbbell, you cannot pretend to outbox the other guy, when you are forced into the situation of having to doing so. Perhaps these activities have evened and elevated my mood not because I'm too tired to get angry, or my hormones are now more in balance (although these all may be true), but because it's a constant, objective reminder of what I can achieve, and what I cannot. Many of the most angry people I've met are also the most delusional, expecting themselves of greatness when they're incompetent. I would argue that this is because they have no measuring stick for what they're capable of, they're lost and hopeful (as your video points out) -- they assume the best of themselves. This ties closely into the philosophy of "knowing nothing." I would say the best solution to prevent anger and live a productive life (i.e not lowering your expectations to null) is to simply be unafraid of failure. Find out how good you are at things by doing them. I feel like that was a very roundabout way of saying not a whole lot, but since it's all typed up I'm just hitting submit.

slackerlifeman That's an astute observation. I noticed the same thing about the angry people around me. They spend too much time living in fantasy, in a world where they are 'King' because it is easier and more appealing than reality. Then when they are reminded of the truth of thier delusions, they respond in anger to try and protect their fantasy land. In a way it also ties into ego and having too much of it.

Why am I angry? That is very simple: I had dreams and they were crushed, I'm unemployed, I'm loser, I'm full of myself because I can't stand admitting the fact that I'm a failure. I used to be so caring and patient, Now I'm a mess, I sleep most of the time, I'v lost the ability to care about anything or anyone, I have existential crisis almost all the time. I don't know what to do anymore, sometimes I'm so furious that I think I might die from a stroke, just kill me and be done with it. That's how anger and depression feels like folks.

Luna Looney It makes no sense to me that assholes are only angry because they are full of "hope". That makes no fucking sense what so ever. Anger has nothing to do with having hope, and some people are angry because they are simply just simple minded assholes. I have known people who are the most pessimistic people I have ever seen and they still have sever anger issues.

Theres a difference between being sad and being pessimistic. One means being upset when your expectations aren't reached, the other, you never expected much therefore can't be upset.
@poopsmith890

Joe P Yeah dude, the point is fairly neatly encapsulated when Alaine refers to the fact that (to paraphrase) "we're always losing things of value," "flights are often imperfect," "relationships are laden with disparity." You might say that IS being realistic, but that's what the video suggests healthy pessimism is. It doesn't suggest that you be "sad rather than angry" imo. Pessimism isn't about being sad, it's about chalking in the unattractive reality that things will often be lame. This is discussed in their video about the Stoics, which I would recommend btw.
@josephpagan6820
@josephpagan6820 7 лет назад
Nelson Frew "Chalking in the the unattractive reality that things will often be lame" Pardon me, but that seems more like REALISM than pessimism. Pessimism - the unrealistic assessment that everything will go horribly worse than it should Realism - The fair rational assessment that things will go as they should (which is less than perfect) Optimism - The unrealistic assessment that everything will go great or perfect. Do you see what I'm saying? The Metrics they use for expectations is too narrow in my opinion.

*I Disagree.* Only applying one way of thinking in your life (pessimism) is unwise. I recommend apply stoicism when needed, but not all the time. A constant stoic mind is a limited mind. You need optimism in order to progress, take action, and grow. I challenge you to name but a handful of chronic pessimists who achieved great outward and inward success.

no. basically "prepare for the worst and come to terms with it.". one expect things to be perfect, and they aren't, so one gets angry. the solution is to stop expecting things to be perfect. that doesn't mean they can't be enjoyed or appreciated. on another note, as someone who has anger issues but has gone through a nihilistic "dead inside" period as well, my honest assessment is that your situation is even worse than mine.

Incredible video! I have been struggling with angriness recently and found this video very helpful! Although there is always some ppl criticising your work in the comments, I think you guys are doing a very good job. I got the message, angriness comes from the disappointment of the reality versus the expectation. Maybe that is my problem, too much thinking about the thing that happened to me or could happen and I judge it "inadmissible", clear symptom of been too hopeful of the world or others! Thank you for the videos TSL!!!
@school_pizza

this video and comments are missing the point, you can still have hope just lower your expectations of people, situations, etc. and also it's more about having hope for the right things and knowing when something isn't worth your energy

I have a different view. I like to think of man as good, and the bad ones are the mistake, not think of man as bad, and the good ones are the mistake. It gives us something to look up to, while this vid tells you to look down.
@EarthSurferUSA
@EarthSurferUSA 7 лет назад
The correct attitude is, "calm down, and figure out the problem". We can't change reality, (true reality), it is what it is and it is up to us to figure it out. But this vid is not talking about any reality of nature, but the environment man can control. If I want my pencil to fall up in my living room when I let it go, but gravity keeps pulling the pencil to the floor, that is a true reality I have to accept.
