Update 6 May 2024: it looks as if Mike has tried to scrub his nootropics video off the internet (the link no longer works), and hasn’t made any kind of statement about removing it. He just swept it under the rug. Too bad for Mike, the internet never forgets. Enjoy the show 🤣

Thanks for preserving this critical blunder from Mike. It was weird how little people talked about it outside the video and pretty hilarious when it was quietly swept under rug. I am still extremely curious where the hell they found that guy or why they greenlit the video after presumably editing and rewatching it.

I actually work in the supplement industry and 95% of nootropics are straight up marketing. Often times the clinical studies used as support are cherry picked and not always repeatable, which is one of the main principles of the scientific method. The second is that there’s this weird trend in the industry to start lumping in substances that help with relaxation as “cognitive performance “ which is deceitful. In short there’s thousands of extracts and shit out there that haven’t been studied extensively enough to say “this boosts brain performance by X amount”. Most of the research centers around minerals and letter vitamins but that’s not as sexy as “Nootropics “ lol. Not to mention all the quality issues that come into play during the manufacturing of said supplements ( many of these facilities make multiple products for multiple companies) and the industry in general is not heavily regulated because it’s seen as adjacent to pharmaceuticals, which to be fair might be more regulated, but the FDA is too over worked to really stop bad companies. Also I just checked like 6 different times and can’t find this video anywhere. Dr.Mike must’ve removed it after getting ass-blasted by his comment section

Mike is awesome, but his nootropics video SUCKED SUCKED SUCKED. I get people being angry at the guy in these comments who haven’t see his other material, but his videos are generally extremely good. He’s a PhD in sports physiology, but as with any expert, if you talk outside your realm of expertise you’re bound to eventually make a fool out of yourself. The weird thing is that he somehow didn’t even know how to find a good expert on the topic to bring on.

Not true at all. We here are simply asking for scientific evidence and research in regards to the “nootropics” recommendations in this video. For comical relief we joke on Mike being a roid-head which by your own admission he is. I also work in the supplement industry so proliferating bullshit claims and “bro-science” is what causing a lot of issues currently. I’m not taking away Mike’s insights into lifting , specifically controlled eccentric movements to increase muscle stimulation. However, just because a channel offers a counter to your favorite RU-vidr doesn’t mean it’s inherently flawed just because it critiques this terrible video

The CBD part is pretty simple, I don't know how you are confused about this. CBD is supposed increase sleep quality. At the moment, it looks really promising. Assuming it improves sleep quality>improves cognition. I'm not going to cite shit on a youtube comment because you would claim I'm cherry picking. Look it up for yourself.

@BuJammy
@BuJammy 4 месяца назад
@@Eduardo-rw8yd That makes no sense. You said "CBD improves sleep.". Ok, some research no doubt says it does. Then you said, "therefore it's a "smart drug" (nooptropic) because it improves sleep quality, which improves cognition.". Nooptropics are defined as cognitive enhancers, not things that aid sleep. In fact, some nootropics are bad for sleep, but lets leave that to one side. You continue with "Sleep aids fall into that definition, does not matter how simple and complex the mechanisms are.". Many (most ?) sleep aids are not cognitive enhancers. In fact, many of them are well established to promote cognitive decline, but lets leave that to one side. If it "does not matter how simple and complex the mechanisms are" then we could say that bathtub meth is a cognitive enhancer, because eventually the comedown will make you fall in to a deep and restful sleep. Better yet, while we're speaking of bathtub meth, let us go with an extremely tried and tested method of cognitive enhancement. Your Mom is a cognitive enhancer, because after she whacks me off, I sleep much better. Entire towns will testify to this, no doubt. You don't know what "mechanism" means and, like most people who are dumb, you use emojis. You clearly need more and better smart drugs, a glass of warm milk, and forty winks. Maybe call your Mom?

So I'm coming over as a fan of Dr Mike, full disclosure. From where I'm standing, most of his advice seems based in pretty solid science. This video about nootropics seems very iffy though! I gotta say though man, if you don't link to a single study or mention one by name (halfway through the vid, sorry in advance if there are references later) this really just boils down to your word against his. Edit: okay, watched the whole thing! Man, that video (Dr Mike's video I mean) sure was bad! I don't ever watch his long form stuff. He has shorter, more scripted and edited videos with much more reasonable advice. So how was this a "critical analysis?" It was certainly critical but it sure aa hell wasn't analytical. You pretty much just said "wrong" or "citation needed" without further explaining any points, making any substantial corrections, or pointing to any scientific evidence. I can agree that Dr. Mike's video was pushing misinformation, but I don't see how this "analysis" meaningfully corrects that.
@Solomon_Nelson
@Solomon_Nelson 4 месяца назад
Hi there. You allege that I don’t point to any scientific evidence, which is false. Do you know what a PMID is? Any time I mention a study, I show it with its PMID on screen, which allows you to retrieve the study yourself. If you manage to find a study whose PMID I didn’t give, then I’ll send you a link to it.

@@Solomon_Nelson my goodness. I listened to most of this video. Lol, I only saw the links at the end. And those were about AAS abuse if I remember correctly. So it seemed like you didn't post any studies about the main topic here! Well, that sure was a misunderstanding. Time to read some studies then! More out of curiosity than anything, I wasn't sold on the nootropic thing anyways!
@ltgreatsocks1
@ltgreatsocks1 4 месяца назад
@@Solomon_Nelson Huh... So I checked out a couple of those studies. The one about weed making negative cognitive effects, I think it was a big meta analysis but I scanned it, didn't see anything crazy. I did read in a study that found an average four point IQ difference in long term smokers. Lol, daily smoking isn't great for your brain, but four IQ points isn't huge. That is important though, people don't always acknowledge that! The other one I read, the CBD study, 31161980 pmid... Did you actually read that whole study? It was pretty damn positive about CBD, mentions like a dozen different areas of possible therapeutic potential and also the one proven therapeutic use, anti epileptic. Regarding adverse events "In humans receiving the drug for the treatment of epilepsies and psychiatric disorders, the most common AEs included tiredness, diarrhea, nausea, and hepatotoxicity. Overall, the incidence of these occurrences is low and, in comparison with other drugs employed for the treatment of these diseases, CBD has a better side effect profile." This just doesn't feel super well researched or well written man, I gotta be honest.

Came upon this channel and hoped I found someone objective and critical that can give counterpoints to Dr Mike and alike. Being natty I genuinely wanted to like this. But after watching a few videos it's clear you're not objective, you're a hater. The way you point out every single little thing that you possibly could that goes against their narrative, throw in a little jab at anything and only agree with them when there's some backhanded compliment or straight up insult to be created from it. It's obvious you do not approach the content in good faith and then disagree, you come in with full determination to disagree and find ways to do it successfully. Shame really, you seemed like a smart guy, but all that I've seen from you has toxic and hateful undertones, which is made worse by your "holier than thou" approach to "roiders".

Here we go again, lol. I tend to agree. If you don't have your brain, you have nothing. It's no good saying "there's a pill for everything". You must guard your brain jealously. I can only imagine the sort of replies this would provoke ("well, actually, nootropics exist to guard your brain".). I tend to feel that nootropics exist for people who are not as "smart" as they feel they should be. A side point. I had my IQ tested in my early 30s. The result was 153. This is highish, but not exactly Newton or Napier. I had a bunch of strokes, out of the blue, aged 32, and it was tested again at 131, more than an entire standard deviation drop. Having it tested 18 months ago, aged 43, it was at 147. Close enough, but I still cannot shake the feeling I am not as I once was. I would also add that it's important to learn how to think, not what to think, then to learn how *you* think, and to learn what you're suited for. Being an intellectual is all about what you've read, while being a creative is all about what you've written. We've all met people who are intelligent but have tried to squeeze themselves in to the wrong box, and would be better off finding out what they are good at. (Although, if you've been a pig farmer for 40 yrs, it's no good saying "I'm really a ballet dancer". You should probably learn to be a better pig farmer).
