In this video, we're chatting about how NOT to train obese clients and designing a personal training session for obese clients.

I liked that my trainer didn't particularly take much attention to my obesity. His style of training just scaled by your fitness level. I'm still obese but lot more fit. That's another thing to notice. You can improve fitness without immediate weight loss. It can be delayed for benefit of the client.

Thank you for these videos. I have an obese client now. It’s challenging because she is doing partner training with a friend and they are in different places fitness wise. I definitely play it safe use chair exercises and light dumbbells and resistance bands for both of them. We also have total gym which is great for people who can’t do a traditional squats.

Your videos have been very help full since I found you and I wanted to ask if you can do a video going over how to train younger youth I recently been approached to train a young teen (14-17) and I only been training adult clients any tips and advice would be greatly appreciated

Thanks! I appreciate it! That sounds like a pretty good topic for a video! I’d recommend trying to keep things fun when working with kids that age. Most of the same rules still apply though. Try to teach the compound moves, like squats, lunges, pushing, pulling, etc. and then plan the session around that and, of course their specific goals. Some of my best clients have been high school kids that age, so I’m sure you’ll do well!

I know me too!!! They shouldn't be doing any jumping or running! It's common sense! At the end of the day, everyone should be doing exercises that they ENJOY so they stick with it for the rest of their lives.

Hey Jeff- I'm back! ...really appreciating your content still :) I have a request as well! I'm currently trying to get things moving as a trainer- specifically, I wish to do group fitness classes at a park 2-3 mornings a week. I know my training was more oriented toward personal training, but I also recognize that the group thing is what seems ideal- when considering personal volition and logistics. Thus, I'm wondering if you could perhaps share tips on core concepts of training + any resources regarding bodyweight exercises/functional movement/mobility training; my dream would be to blend this style of training with meditation/mindfulness-based techniques to give people an experience that cultivates greater mind-body awareness while building a solid physical foundation and becoming more resilient to physical and mental injury :) Mahalo!

This is a very good question! I don’t usually do body fat measurements with my very obese clients. If a client is comfortable with it, and they’re not too obese I will do skin caliper measurements for that person. I find that weigh ins, and circumference measurements can be more effective for many clients than anything else though. This is true for some obese clients as well.

Love love love your content. I just started watching your videos yesterday and I already feel like they’re helping me a lot. If you are training an obese client twice per week, would you recommend doing the same exercises/workout (full body) on both those days or would you switch it up like, upper body one day and lower body the other?

Great video !!!! Quick question, what if your client is obese, has a goal of improving cardiovascular health using cycling, does not want to lose weight, and wants also wants to improve stamina to go on hiking trips in the future (not specific). Edited: also has a history of bulimia. Any advice ?

If I’m understanding your original question correctly, the client wants to essentially work on better cardio and stamina, specifically for hiking. Since they are doing some cardio outside sessions, I would definitely make sure to focus on making sure that their legs and core are strong(er) to support hiking and uneven terrain. If they are not interested in losing weight/have a history of an ED, you can check in on how they feel their nutrition is going (ex: are you hungry? Are you eating a decent amount of protein) without focusing too much on other stuff.

If we have an overweight client not so much (210 lbs), in strength days let's say 2 days a week, I was wondering how far of faliure should their sets be, Also I worried that they will not really be able to achieve The asked RIR because they might underestimate it. I'm asking if the client want some muscle while losing fat

Most sets should be pretty difficult but not necessarily at failure. I like to ask questions like “was that easy, medium, or hard?” Or “how many more reps do you feel like you could’ve done?” to help gauge intensity and RIR/RPE. Generally a medium to medium + is good range for most people.

Honestly, it depends on the person. Some obese clients could do that assessment and others shouldn’t or couldn’t. You have to take it all on a client by client basis and always err on the side of caution. As in if you’re unsure of whether or not it will go well, don’t do it.

What do you do if a client can’t do the physical part of assessment process i.e step up, push up, plank? I feel like I don’t have a starting point so I’m having trouble with coming up with a workout plan.

I understand where you’re coming from! I have had a fair number of clients who can’t do the physical portion of any standard assessment. For clients like that I do the measurements, and still try to get a baseline for as much as I can. As far as your client goes, what issues do they have?

@@SortaHealthyTrainerEducation i figured they aren’t strong enough because they couldn’t do one push up or hold themselves up for very long when I had them do the plank. Also they get tired quickly because they couldn’t do the step up test very long either. I don’t want to discourage them and I’m nervous because I’m very new to being a personal trainer.

I have clients start out only being able to hold a plank for a few seconds or maybe they can’t do any pushups in the beginning. This is actually pretty common. Just let them know that they’re just starting out and things will improve from there. Keep the communication very upbeat and positive! Often times it’s really motivating for a client to go from being able to do 0 pushups to 10 pushups in their next assessment. This all being said, if you think that any of the physical tests in the assessment could cause an injury, then in that case I would skip them. Just remember they’re paying you to help them improve themselves. You can only show improvement if you have a baseline. Never do something that you think could injure a client though.

There are definitely some exercises that I wouldn’t do with some obese clients but you have to take that on a client by client basis.

What advice would you have in working with a client who is obese, but suffers from insecurity when it comes to weekly weigh ins and does not take advice like daily steps and diet very serious? This client I have loves to train with me, we have a good relationship but when it comes to talking about weight loss it’s a touchy topic for her. In our consultation she seemed to only bring up getting stronger etc, but shy’d away from from the topic of weight loss. FYI she is 5’6 and 300lbs. So it is important for her to lose this weight. Though I don’t want to be pushy. Would like to hear your thoughts? Cheers Jeff.

Thanks for the support! It sounds like your client just wants to get more active/stronger for now and isn’t quite ready to focus on weight loss. Even is losing weight is the best thing for the client, I think we still need to value their specific goals over anything else. I would keep training her and check in with her on her goals often. It sounds like you’re doing a great job so far!

And our sessions will be increasing her metabolic rate which will aid with fat loss long term down the road if she becomes interested in that. Quite different for me as most my clients go on about weight loss many times throughout consultation and sessions. But are only 10 - 30lb overweight most the time lol. Thankyou!

What do you mean "can't do as much nutrition wise"?

In those states (Red and Orange) you, as a personal trainer, can't legally do any nutrition with your clients. You can however use apps like My fitness pal and other resources created by dietitians to help get your clients results. Hopefully that answers your question.

I've been stuck as to finding a process/formula for training people since i've gotten certified. The question i'm stuck on now is how in depth should i learn the FMS when it comes to assessments. NASM drilled the OHS into my soul but I'd like to be a bit more thorough with assessments seeing as to how NASM is also very 'corrective' heavy. thanks for any of your wisdom.

I think that NASM does a pretty good job with movement assessments like the overhead squat. The FMS is definitely a more comprehensive movement screen though so it just depends on how much value you, your employer, and your clients find in that. In my area some facilities pay trainers more for having the FMS certs, so in that scenario it it definitely worth it.

It’s good to talk about what they’ve tried in the past when trying to game plan on what to focus on going forward. That information can be useful for planning. Discussing diets they’ve tried and how long they’ve been trying to lose weight fit into this category. Sometimes it can help motivate clients to make a change too.

Someone needs to teach trainers STOP ENFORCING CARDIO my knees are decimated and my heart works out as is. Weights to help my frame ffs

I agree with you for the most part. Low impact cardio should most likely be a part of your plan as well though.

Use the Elliptical machine, no pressure on the joints and it's highly enjoyable ☺️

Love your videos and appreciate all your insight, but I wish you would stop recommending to people to drink water while eating. It impairs digestion/nutrient absorption by diluting your digestive juices/enzymes in your mouth and stomach. You should only drink water 30 mins before and/or after eating, not during.

Thanks for your support! Many studies have actually shown that drinking water while eating does not actually impair digestion and can actually help it, alongside the fact that it slows down eating.

An experienced obese trainer could inspire discouraged clients! So sick of seeing young, skinny trainers who don’t understand the limitations of obese and post menopausal women!

I hear what you’re saying. I don’t think you necessarily need to obese or post menopausal to train either of those groups effectively though
