Throughout football history, there has only ever been one who was known as the most intimidating and fearsome goalkeepers of all time. With lightning-fast reflexes, a genuinely fearless attitude, and a commanding presence on the pitch, he had the ability to rally his squad and intimidate the toughest opponents of his era - striking fear and doubt into the hearts of even the most skilled strikers as they approached the goal.
He was truly a forced to be reckoned with - so much so that over his career, he would come to be known as Der Titan - or in English, the titan. Very few in his position have achieved as much or even come close to the level of respect his peers had for him - and his name was Oliver Kahn.
There’s a reason why in the eyes of many, Kahn was the greatest overall goalkeeper we’ve ever seen. So today, we’re gonna take look at his career story and see how he became known as the scariest goalkeeper of all time.

there is an old tradition in germany to train goalkeepers as good as ever possible. there had been many top goalkeepers in germany before kahn. but yes, he is at least one of the best ever: if your opponent has a body like a main battle tank but moves like a cat on adrenaline, you better take care.
@Centa92

@Conny Faust You are right. But looking to the future it is questionable if it goes on like this. Right now there is no young german goalkeeper who can be expected to be world class anytime. Looking at the most valuable german goalkeepers right now, almost all of the 10 highest rated keepers are at least around 30 years old. The youngest somehow promising goalkeeper here is Alexander Nübel, but he also is already 26 and I don't see him becoming a world class keeper. Apart from ter Stegen, Neuer, Leno, Trapp, Nübel Germany has only a bunch of keepers on a solid Bundesliga level, nothing special at all. It will be interesting to see what happens, when Neuer, ter Stegen and Leno retire...

Even some of his teammates feared him because if they made a mistake he would give them hell for it iirc. He was always looking for ways to improve and motivate himself. For example, if he was driving with his car to an important meeting or game, he would count every green light he drove through as some kind of victory and see it as a good omen for what was ahead of him. I think he talked quite often about motivation and such thing (when asked). I might misremember it a bit, but he also said that easy games were actually among the most difficult ones for a goalkeeper because of the risk to relax and lose focus during such games.

Well, it wouldnt have made a difference if he wasnt white - because being insulted as ape had an entirely different connotation in germany. Before being connected with the entire world it was literally the same as calling someone dumb ("Affenzirkus", "Sich zum Affen machen", "Was ein Affe" etc), so when it would have happened to a black guy back then it wouldnt have been about his skin colour, but about people thinking that person is stupid. Today is a different story because due to globalization we share cultural aspects of other parts of the world and it would obviously be connected with skin - but not back then. Kahn was like a myth, a living legend - kinda similar to Schuhmacher in f1. One of the greatest german people alive. I knew no Ronaldo, Zidane or Figo, newer watched a football match or knew that fc bayern munich exist - but I knew his crazy eyes and bloodstained face and that he would never back down. Kinda like the war hero we never had. So yeah to us germans growing up in the 2000 he is the greatest goaly of all time (although retrospectivly seen Neuer will likely have surpassed him when ending his carrer - still he will never be the TITAN 🫡).

Hello! First of all, its a great video, and I also appreciate all your other work. Now some minor corrections to the story about the Karlsruhe SC (which is my hometown club and I used to be at every match at home in the time when Kahn was with us, and even before and after): the KSC played in the second division in 1986/1987 and then made it back to the Bundesliga, but Kahn was not our first choice keeper then, it was Alexander Famulla. Kahn also did not play a major role in the first seasons in the Bundesliga, but then there was one match in the 90/91 season in which we were 1:2 back after short time vs Bochum and our manager decided to bring in Kahn. He was a bit nervous at first, but then he made some good saves, and we won 3:2 in the end, one of my alltime favourites Srecko Bogdan (an AWESOME Libero, who kept us alive and in the league in the early years) scoring the winner. After that Kahn was our first choice keeper and we slowly made progress. Not wanting to take anything away from Oliver Kahns GREAT contribution to the success of the KSC, but in the time when we finally qualified for the UEFA Cup, our team was not bad at all. We had some decent defense, the - although a bit aged - workhorse Wolfgang Rolff in the defensive midfield (he was part of the EC winner team of the HSV 1983 and stopped Platini in the final in Athens!) and brilliant and fluid attacking players like Sergej Kiriakov and Rainer Krieg, Valeri Shmarov, Manfred Bender (he came from Bayern München and brought us excellent corners and free kicks, and also the winning mentality) to just name some of them. In the first season in UEFA Cup we also had a new striker named Edgar "Euro Eddy" Schmitt and I would say in the first half of the 1993/1994 season we were one of the best teams in the world when playing at home. We beat PSV Eindhoven, Valencia (7:0!) and Girondins Bordeaux with a young Zinedine Zidane... but it is true, Kahn was special, his mentality could be felt even in the top of the stands, and when he left to Bayern München, we never had the same quality in the goal again (although his successor was not bad either, just not so special like Oli). The transfers of good players from our team to Bayern was also something slowly killing the club (we lost: Sternkopf, Mehmet Scholl, Oliver Kreuzer, Oliver Kahn, Thorsten Fink and Michael Tarnat to Bayern).

Calling Kahn a legend would be way of an understatement. I have never seen a player, any player, no matter on which position, who was that dominant in everything he did. He was like a force of nature that kept balls out of his goal, strikers away from him and who pushed his teammates to do the impossible against all odds. I think the most Kahn thing I ever read about was when he took part in some charity penalty shootout with 9 year olds. It was said that they would gift some money for every goal the kids scored on him. He saved every penalty.

King Kahn had a fiercesome reputation, and though he usually just barked, he did also bite (literally), but the one you really needed to look out for was Toni Schuhmacher. That guy was a psycho. In the one game back in 86 Mexico he almost killed a striker of the French team. Just ran headlong into him like a Juggernaught and completely disregarded the ball. What I hate most about that was the fact that he never even apologised. As for best goalkeeper, he may currently not be in his best form, but Manuel Neuer is collectively praised as the best Goalkeeper Germany has ever had until now.
