Yeah indeed I always understand how Dwayne is sometimes and Niko also understands that he is a little troubled and that annoying dude Playboy I hate him he doesn’t understand how Dwayne is all he does is talk trash about him
Niko was a soldier, both being a soldier and a cop are patriotic things and maybe both identified themselves on the struggles of being betrayed by their own crooked corrupt govermnents pushing them to a life of crime in order to survive.
When I was younger I felt the immense tension and sadness around Dwayne’s character. His yearning for a family, yet his fear of it itself. His only friend being Niko. Playboy X betraying him. I’m glad you can spare him and hang out with him. He’s a broken man who if he doesn’t have anybody, he doesn’t have anything. GTA needs this type of writing again. Harsh, emotional storytelling.
I really enjoy GTA’s writing when it’s crazy, wacky, almost at times cartoonish antics and characters like in Vice City or San Andreas- or when it’s serious, dark, and emotional like in 4 and The Lost and Damned. I enjoyed GTA V’s story, but it felt like at times it was trying to be a mix of the two, and I wasn’t a fan. I think The Ballad of Gay Tony did the ‘wacky story’ thing really well.
@@icywinx861 or my ex who was a good girl who had bad things put on her such as her murder by a mob boss because he was targeting me but she went into the car and ever since I've planning on finding the bastard and maiming and then murdering him 😭🤬
Niko and dwayne made such good friends. The line "sometimes I want to end it... but I ain't there yet" is so heavy it has its own gravitational pull... this game was so well written..
Bro when I was young I was playing at like 12am or something and accidentally picked the kill Dwayne option. Had so much fucking guilt killing him I legit cried. Dude had an old man in his apartment mf defend him with a golf club even though you come in with guns...
I think gta iv's story was alot more dark, drab, realistic, and emotionally heavy because of the era of time in which it was released. Literally during a horrible recession, as technology started becoming a bigger part of everyone's lives making everything more impersonal, during a growing opiate epidemic, during the heaviest phase of conflicts in iraq and afghanistan, while russia fought a border war in georgia. The world was very bleak at the time, but we were too young to realize it. In retrospect gta iv is a perfect depiction of that era of time as it unfolded where as gta vc and sa take place in a bygone era in retrospect and instead are filled with tropes instead of commentary on the world in which we were living. Such a beautiful work of art this game is.
I always remembered when my uncle emigrated to US While He was promised Land of oportunity He lived Life In worse poverty Than rest off my family in Comunist Poland He told me stories later of how he became alcoholic and how crime was everywhere in Chicago GTA 4 Reminded me of his stories So much Especialy begining of the game
Niko's an odd character, on the one hand, he's a casually violent man who willingly hangs out with bad people and even helps them kill each other off on occasion... on the other hand, he's a just a goofy guy that genuinely wants to make his friends happy
He’s the true emphasis of what a Human being is. A violent and hungry being that would still die for those he cares about. Niko is a prodigy when it comes to being a criminal because he still has empathy. All the people he worked with, did not.
@@lucascrider3907 both of you are actually insane, where do you get niko being a goofy guy? have you played the game. True emphasis of what a human being is? Is your entire life experience watching movies and playing video games.
@@thekernel69 Hm? He said it as one of the reasons he couldn't be a cop and another reason he mentioned was that black cops weren't encouraged back in the 80s or something like that. So we can conclude that he was illiterate in the 80s, nothing about 90s or beyond. Even so, he still isn't the best at it as we can see in his emails. Still pretty understandable though, so like the other guy said, A for effort.
If you even choose to kill Dwayne Playboy just somehow hates Niko and acts like you killed "his man" but he was the one who told you to kill Dwayne in the first place. Thats how manipulative he is.
The@@yettiluch1 Playboy "kill my best friend" also Playboy after you kill Dwayne "nah fuck you" me but you told me you wanted me to kill God why didn't Niko go to his place and kill him after he killed Dwayne
Dwayne is like a microcosm of the actual human side of street crime, aka people who struggled to find a way to live above the poverty line without committing illegal acts, while Playboy X reflects the kind of person who seeks the grandiose asethetic of a crime lord for entirely selfish reasons, lacks remorse, and most importantly is at heart a coward.
Very true, to me Dwayne is the most relatable character in the game. His depression and guilt from seeing his friends turn into addicts and his childhood, but still trying to make a decent life after getting out prison. He paid for his crimes with jail time, in theory he should be happy to be free, but is still wondering if the bullet is the only good way out. He is honest and tells how much he is suffering, to the point it is almost bothersome. I love how Niko makes him realize he ain't the only one suffering, by telling him about seeing his friends in a mass grave, which just makes him reply "Oh fuck" and go all quiet. This Niko never tells anyone else, I think it is because it is only Dwayne and him who has a similar suffering therefore he probably feels safe to open up about it. Roman he also tells stuff, but Roman don't seem to understand it the same way, since Roman seems to try to make Niko ignore it and focus more on living the American dream. And that is not wrong either, Roman just wants Niko to be happy and not dwell on the past like Dwayne. It all feels so very real and human.
There were chances that shot after droping the gun hits him and kills him wihout letting niko execute him xD

@@blackfox7448 Yeah! A Cop dropped his gun after I shoot him and it killed me because I had low health 😂 just looked back to my brother and we laughed our asses off... happened not even a year ago when I revisited gta 4 on the xbox360
I wonder if most players end up overlooking the details of GTA 4's storyline is a reason why GTA 5's story isn't nearly as good. GTA 4 isn't appreciated as much as past titles, and ThePro also had to mention that we're looking at the characters based on morality, rather than the rewards presented by the game.
My favorite characteristic about Niko is that talking things out is one of his very first solutions to a problem. He never resorts to violence as being the first answer between friends, or old friends.
@FalloutGNR that is an excellent point! It kind of makes sense that he resorts to conversations to either connect with others or defuse situations. Really think about it; you live in a ruined Eastern European country ruined by war and poverty, being used to fighting in a war that had young men barely out of high school commit horrendous act of violence to their enemies. You were betrayed by one of your closest friends for really nothing, and witness all of your other friends killed in cold blood. When dealing with a place like Liberty City, Niko decides that’s it’s best to resolve problems with conversation, because he does not have to prove how dangerous he is. Niko Bellic is capable of violence that no gangster there could comprehend, and does what he can to get by with his cousin Roman. This game is so complex and amazing honestly
@@indestructible247 that’s a fair point. It brings a lot more complexity to Niko since he was put in a bad situation due to his friend’s actions. Not everyone was innocent in the war, but how could you be?
Both came from pretty fucked up places but Niko came from the Yugoslav Wars. Makes sense that even Dwayne would be sorta fazed by his backstory considering that Niko faced literal atrocities as a kid.
Playboy always seemed kind of passive aggressive to Dwayne. Especially in that phone call after the shootout at the construction site where he asks Niko to "go and hang out with his broke ass."
@@planderlinde1969 the part where he screamed that he owns the town goes to show how much of a shit bird he is I like the part where Niko tells X that he will be seeing him very soon in that phone call, goes to show that Niko wants to eliminate Playboy X
Playboy X was a complete narcissist thinking he's better than everyone else, not admitting his flaws and couldn't see that he was the one in the wrong. He also didn't care about Dwayne who taught him everything he knew and was like a father to him.
Same man. When he pointed his MAC and said he wanted to. ''Just, bam. End it all.'' .... too real man, i wanted to do that too. Not now tho, im good now xd.
He didn't hang out with Dwayne out of sympathy. He could genuinely relate to him, as they came from similar backgrounds of poverty and violence. They both took on lives of crime to survive, and lost some family and friends to death and betrayal as well. Niko would often remind Dwayne while hanging out together that he's not the only one who has had a hard life. Niko kept it real with Dwayne and vise versa.
The reason I always spare Dwayne, he's one of the only few people that ever understood what Niko went through. That sense of loneliness and depression, that lack of belonging and relatability, Niko and Dwayne are not the same, but they understand the troubles the other one has.
If you really think about it Dwayne and Playboy's relationship is like new Rockstar ignoring the old Rockstar similar to Playboy neglecting Dwayne. Just look what Rockstar did when Gta iv turned 10 years old and did nothing and removed the old Vladivostok fm songs and just kept milk Gta online money as possible.
@@trollege9488 i only played the revenge ending but according to what i read, the deal ending have that same bug too (niko cant lift himself up to get into the chopper)
Playboys name is perfectly ironic. He played Dwayne, and he tried to play Niko. Ultimately he played himself. Niko wouldn’t have killed him if he didn’t order the hit on Dwayne. He chose his fate with the life he led.
Honestly, PlayBoy X could have just left Dwayne alone after the night club incident. Count it as “we are even” and sever ties like he wanted. But no, PlayBoy X was a coward who couldn’t stand to know Dwayne his old mentor was still around.
It's amazing how sane Niko is for what he went through. Abusive father, growing up in the Yugoslav Wars, seeing the atrocities there. A lesser man would've turned out worse.
@@wiseass2149 Yeah, Darko speaks about how Niko and his friends murdered some of his neighbours just because. Niko isn't as righteous as he's made out to be and Darko isn't as treacherous as they depict him.
Dwayne was real af, I could tell that from the conversations we had. I definitely wasn’t gonna kill him. Playboy used to sneak diss Niko on some of the missions too. I could in a way relate to Dwayne. It’s dope too because after you kill Playboy you get to hang out with Dwayne sometime & you get a cool spot to stay in Playboys crib. I loved calling up Dwayne & hanging out with him too because I knew he had a hard life & hanging with him could ease things up for him temporarily.
Most cops I come across are pretty nice, I appreciate them for their service in keeping our communities safe from all the scumbag crimminals, and I support Blue Lives Matter.
4:40 hearing about how Roman’s mother mostly raised him and roman and tried to save nikos life from that hardship, only to end up raped and killed in a ditch, most likely due to her kindness, was and still is one of most heartbreaking shit you can hear in this game.
I really have to give it to Dwayne. He was backstabbed, betrayed, and then ditched. He got out of prison alone and dry. He had severe depression and no one to talk to about it. He fantasized about suicide all the time. But he didn't. He always held on to a sliver of hope and never ended it.
That execution is actually better when Playboy says this line. "Argh. I was someone, you know. I made it. I changed the game.” That makes the line Niko says even better.
Yeah, screw rng tbh. It should have been the only line he says in the execution part. Maybe they should have used the other lines used for the execution in other circumstances like the chase sequence of the mission, or shelved them altogether.
I love how during the scene when Dwayne comes back, you can see Niko and Dwayne instantly had this silent connection during his conversation with Playboy, then at the end Dwayne looks at Niko to talk to him, as if Niko was instantly his righthand man, you can tell how it was a scene of "real recognized real" and they both had a bonding moment in talking about how Playboy is. I love how Niko has Dwaynes back before you even hangout and become full friends, when Playboy calls Niko calls him out on abandoning Dwayne, but Playboy being to full of himself only sees it as Niko validating his own problems towards Dwayne, just so full of himself till the end.
Dont forget the part where that girl who was hanging around the living room suddenly mention Dwayne to Playboy X, and X has this suprised and upset or feared reaction, clearly shows he doesnt want to see Dwayne
@@hybridAbsol yeah I know which girl you’re talking about from the mission Destruction For Beginners yeah when that girl who told Playboy that Dwayne wanted to see him when Playboy was like who is it when the girl is like Dwayne some shit I don’t know that girl sounded kinda stupid
I feel like Dwayne wanted to become a police officer because he wanted to prevent what happened to his mother from happening in other families and that was his best solution to do that :(
GTA IV is simply the best Grand Theft Auto ever written in terms of story. No other game in the franchise will surpass this one. These characters may be fictional, but the impact they leave when it comes to real-life decisions is REAL, specially when it comes to the infamous Holland Play choice. When I chose to kill Dwayne in the first time around, I felt like a ton of bricks fell on me. The money the mission awarded to you wasn't even worth it(not mentioning Playboy's scumbaggery afterwards). A human life, as for any living being's life, is priceless. However, when I backed up the savefile to take Playboy's life instead, it felt like a huge weight got off of my mind, like I could've taken on the world, just for getting rid of such an evil and disloyal character.
re: Playboy X, something else you could've mentioned: after he learns that Yusuf Amir was going to dedicate that one construction site in the memory of those who had died instead of offering Playboy some lucrative construction shares, all of Playboy's talk about how he and Yusuf could be "brothers" goes flying out the window. Edit: Y'know, the more I think about it, the more shades I see of Dimitri in Playboy.
Playboy X is more like a mix of Dimitri's psychopathy and narcissism and Yusuf's grandeur and opulence. At least Yusuf is a kind-hearted guy and repays the favor when you needed it the most, and as much as I hate him, at least Dimitri has the cleverness on his tactics. Playboy, he think he's in some kind of a fantasy world where he's the good guy when in reality is just a charlatous all-bark-no-bite hoodlum from the streets, and only because he got very lucky he inherited Dwayne's coke empire that Dwayne and he (for a short time), built.
What's interesting about the special cutscene that shows the execution of both play boy x and Dwayne is that play boy despite acting tough and pretending to be a big gangstar notice how he was begging niko not to kill him and tries to persuade him that the whole town will be after him compared to Dwayne he just stood up and let niko kill him he didn't beg or anything he just wanted to die because he realized that not only his friends betrayed him but niko as well who he thought wouldn't betray him because he knew they both shared the bad experiences they had in their life and honestly I'm glad I chose to kill play boy x instead
@@matiasmedinadeoliveira2059 Nah he was a chump. If you look back at the storyline you can tell he was just a coward and he was going to do anything to you.
This video further justifies my decision in killing Playboy X. I'll be honest, when I played this game as a little kid I killed Dwayne. But when I did it, I didn't feel right about what I'd done. Even back then after I killed him I knew I made the wrong decision. It was just straight up depressing, he didn't even put up a fight. I played through this game again years later, this time killing Playboy. I didn't feel bad about killing him at all, and that says something.
i remember i was like 10 when i did this mission, english isn't my native language so i barely knew any so i didn't really understand what they said, but i killed playboy anyway because i just generally felt bad for dwayne after seeing his house
Same when I played this on my first playthrough as a kid back in 09 I killed Dwayne but regreted doing it so I killed Playboy on every other playthrough
I thought it was 1993 when Dwayne got arrested and spent 15 years inside. Where Playboy X turned on his mentor. But the police criminal data computer adds more of an accuracy there. Bravo professional.
I always hung out with Dwayne On my playthroughs. Not because of the back up ability but because I know i how it Feels to be alone like that. Great vid Btw
Rockstar went in a different direction with GTA IV, away from the wackiness of GTA III/Vice City/SA. Although they brought back some of the over-the-top stuff with TBoGT, which I loved.
You know, I've heard Professional sound annoyed before, mostly when it comes to discussing Rockstar's business practices, but I don't think I've ever heard him as genuinely angry as he was when discussing Playboy X and I think that really speaks volumes as to how much of a scumbag the character is.
You're completely right, throughout the video (like around the 33:00 - 34:00 minute mark for example) you can tell how much Playboy X irritates The Professional. I can't blame him!
If a fictional character can invoke that kinda annoyance/irritation that means Rockstar went above and beyond when making Playboy X's personality. The same goes for Dwayne, except it was empathy.
I think it’s because there’s people just like playboy x in the real world, people who say they’re gonna make a difference but in reality are just out for themselves
When you kill dwane and playboy reacts like he did felt like rockstar was telling you directly that you are wrong for your choice, it felt a bit out of character to be that explicit from playboy x
He is an hypocrite, false guy, just like Dimitri(much worse), he want someone dead, but don't want dirt his hands and be the bad guy in eyes of others. He wanted Niko to kill Dwayne by manipulating to do it, after that shit, he acts like he didn't influence him to do this.
Choosing to kill Dwayne is heartbreaking to watch. I haven't even done it myself just to see how that scenario would play out. I can't bring myself to do it lol
Dwayne is a dog. He's been kicked one too many times, and he's broken, and he shows his teeth and bites, and he's cold. But like all dogs, he craves loyalty, affection and reciprocity.
Bro, as a Criminal Justice Student and a Future Law School Student, I loved your analysis. You did a great job mixing the story of the game with reality on how things work in the Criminal Justice System. Example, terms like recidivism and how poverty is one of the major reasons for recidivism, and many others!! Been following you for years already!! Great job bro, keep it up!! #verysmart
I mean I know OG Loc was talentless hack .. but I didn't found him to be this repulsive as Playboy X was. Stupid opportunist - yeah, but not repulsive. Besides Madd Dogg wasn't our buddy at begginings either.
Shows what a great character Niko really is, even though he might be working for bad people, he still help the good ones for nothing (or much less) in return. Too bad hell (probably) never return in a future game..
Dwayne is such a tragic character. I really felt for him the first time I played this even though I was just a kid. Seems like a good dude that just got shit on by life and the people around him. "One of life's victims," as Niko would say. So sad. Always killed Playboy X and made it a point to kick it with Dwayne a lot back in the day.
Because of his moral code and how looks hack on his actions questioning if they were right or wrong, i think Dwayne would have been a much, FARRRRRRR BETTER police officer than Francis McReary
@@hybridAbsol Ironic that Dwayne wasn't allowed to be a cop in the 1990s because he's black, but Tenpenny has been a cop since the 1980s at least. Did Liberty City had a different conduct than San Andreas with allowing black officers at the time?
@@robtz759 because of the civil rights act of 1964, you couldn’t reject someone from a job due to race, so racist interviewers would give a non reason as to why they wouldn’t accept someone. For a long time after the act, and even to an extent today, minorities chances of getting jobs like being a cop or firefighter relied heavily on having a decent interviewer for the position, or at least being that much more capable than a white person. Personally, I think that tenpenny, being more educated than Dwayne, was able to present himself much better for the job than Dwayne could have.
@@robtz759 Tenpenny was quite intelligent meanwhile Dwayne couldn't read so I have no doubt it would've been easier for Tenpenny to become a police officer due to his education level alone.
@@hybridAbsol Funny thing is, if you don't kill those thugs when they drive towards you first time, they'll just drive off after failing to kill you. What a powerful drug lord
With my experience, backstabbing someone in prison while you're on the outside of one of the most unforgivable actions. When I had to pick between the both to choose who to kill, it was no decision. It was a mission.
I don't know why I feel Dwayne and Victor Vance are sorta similar, the difference being that Victor has some people in his life whereas Niko is probably Dwayne's only friend.
I feel I have to confess… I first played this game when I was around 11/12, and I remember I killed Dwayne. I’m not sure whether it was just me skipping the cutscenes and not really understanding the story like I do now, but I have faint memories about killing him because he was so unhappy and it would be the better option. I probably bought into all playboys manipulation too. I remember just as you start shooting at Dwayne, he says “Niko, but I thought we were friends man!?” Or something to that effect. It was literally the only point in the GTA 4 story that I felt horrible about what I had just done.
I like how you talked about Al Capone’s soup kitchen. 6 ancestors on my father’s side got help because of that. My dad’s side of the family isn’t even Italian they are German and Hungarian. Al Capone is not a good guy but he helped those struggling.
The way Playboy X died was kinda telling, considering he used to be a nobody, and now, he's gonna die like one. In an rundown alley, betrayed by his own handgun, and with no one else there except the harbinger of his ultimate downfall. Big Smoke got it way easier. In El Grando Smokio's case, he died in his Crack Fortress, and he just confronted CJ when the dude finally arrived in his "throne room". He still had respect for CJ as a fellow Grove Street Families member, cuz if he no longer did, he'd have run away from that place. Well, just a bit of respect left, cuz he got to the top and figured nothing matters anymore as he's "invincible."
Dwayne is one of the fictional characters that I care because he reminds me of me :( Edit: I was talking about dwayne's friendship with niko, they reminds me of me and my friends.
I actually feel bad for Dwayne he’s such a deep and traumatic character, he got betrayed by his friend, his ex girlfriend and the man who ratted him out. he had a hard life, and he felt like he had nothing left, the only option he felt that he had was suicide he even admits it to Niko. “Sometimes I wanna end this shit” “Just bam” he was in a dark place, I think Prison definitely had an affect on his mental health, he just felt alone and miserable and that he had nothing left. And that’s why killing Playboy is the better option because he truly didn’t care about Dwayne, he didn’t have his back whenever the gangsters took over his club or when Jayvon ratted him out, he was jealous of Dwayne, Playboy is so narcissistic and delusional that he claims that he wanted to change and make the world a better place but no Playboy was full of shit he never changed he never cared about Dwayne or making the world a better place. Especially when he stopped visiting Dwayne while he was in prison in 2004, he didn’t see Dwayne for 4 years and as soon as Dwayne got released. The shit hit the fan when Playboy found out that Dwayne got out of prison. Playboy was so hypocritical and delusional he lived in a fantasy. He was jealous of Dwayne. And when Playboy took over his empire, he wasn’t there to save it he was there to only destroy it. Playboy was a snake. He didn’t care about Dwayne or Niko or anybody. He only cared about himself. Like what Niko said to him before he died. “You didn’t change the game” “The game changed you”.
I was surprised how quickly Playboy lied to try and get Niko to kill Dwayne, we read Dwaynes character perfectly to realize if he wanted something done he'd tell you and if he didn't like you, he'd make that clear to you. Playboy lied to trick Niko to kill Dwayne, and then tried to act all high and mighty when at best he would have turned into another Manny.
Thinking about this, Dwayne kind of reminds me a bit of Vic Vance from Vice city stories. - Both of them were people who had to do bad things but did it for moral reasons, be it to survive or to support themselves or others. - They had noble goals in how to succeed in their lives. Vic wanting to be a soldier and Dwayne wanting to be a cop. - Both had to get involved with drugs yet don't actually like it. - Both had someone that were brothers to them. Vic with Lance and Dwayne with Playboy. And both brothers proved to be a hindrance to them. - Both was betrayed by people that they thought they could trust. I think it's also something to consider that Dwayne is similar to age to Vic as well. In a way i can see Dwayne as like a bad end for Vic. If he never died but never got out of the drug game. Lets be real: Lance would of betrayed Vic if he saw the opportunity. In many ways i can see both Dwayne and Playboy being the modern representation of the two. P.S: also just realized this but a gta game that showed how Dwayne got big before he fell would be good, as it would him doing the drug game in the 90s.
Tbh this relationship is basically Carl and Sweet after Sweet gets out of prison in GTA SA...Carl= Playboy and Dwayne= Sweet...Carl wants to make money moves while Sweet just wants to be a gangster
This video is very interesting. About Playboy, I think that lying and manipulations are a part of his character. He probably learned to lie and connive because of his poor background and becoming a criminal at a very young age. Also, Playboy's act of associating with the Turnchez brothers may seem like it was wrong, but maybe Playboy had his own reason for not taking the club. He couldn't afford a fight with the Spanish Lords, who were probably the largest street gang in Liberty City. Besides, unlike Dwayne, he had no known influence in Bohan. About Jayvon, what are the odds he knew that Dwayne got ratted out by him? I doubt the LCPD told him that, and I doubt Dwayne did, because if he did, Dwayne's old gang would surely take revenge. About Playboy saying that he wants to help kids but he sells drugs, well you're right. Playboy is just a greedy hypocrite. He wanted a business empire but just cared about selling drugs since he had nothing else but with other people working for him, he should have tried branching out his business interests, and also tried to do so on his own. This goes back to what you've said about his weak will. Playboy's issue is that he greatly prioritized his own success, and because he became full of himself he discarded Dwayne. Also regarding Dwayne and Playboy's friendship that led to Playboy's takeover, I think that since Dwayne considered him family, he named him his successor should he get arrested or killed, hence why no gang members ever betrayed him.
I like your points. Only problem I have with the club situation is that even if Playboy couldn't afford a fight with the Spanish gang, that he doesn't mean that he had to do business with them. Dwayne had to be pretty influential at the time, so it would make sense for him to have a fairly strong gang at the time that he went away. Playboy would've been obligated to take back Dwayne's club, but he chose to cast aside any loyalty he had to Dwayne for the money.
If you kill Dwaynes ex he rings you one time and says he thought he heard her while he was in the shower and asks niko if he’s sure he actually killed her, that’s seriously sad
Man.....I dont remember any of these fkin people since when i played gta iv when it first came lmao thanks for the reminder how insanely well acted things were back then i never really appreciated it too much when i was 18 i think i was like "guns go brrrr" the whole time, watching this is like a college level video essay about video game characters to show your professor who has no idea what gta is, and this would totally get an A

I'm glad you made this video cause I personally think the Playboy X and Dwayne arc is one of the most compelling storylines in GTA IV. It has many of the defining features of its story and shares many similarities to the way things went down between Faustin and Rascalov, Niko and Dardan and Niko and Bulgarin. It's probably the most depressing one too.
