After talking about Paganism and the Christianisation of high medieval Scandinavia in our last video, in this one we will cover the most important characters in the region and how historically accurate they are portrayed. Naturally, this will include the kings of Denmark, Norway and Sweden in the game, but we will also discuss some more minor characters.

In Paradox's defence, when dealing with an era like 11th century Scandinavia (or especially CK2's Charlemagne era start) the records are so sparse that you might as well use the semi-mythological kings mentioned in legend because otherwise you'd have to make up fictional rulers, and you might as well use the probably-fictional character who's at least believed to have ruled this region.

Honestly while Hadrada might have been a 'greedy bastard' his adventures and life is far more exciting to read about than the other kings and lords around him

Fun fact about Harald Hardrare is that here in Norway he is considerd a legedary king and one of the last competant Norweigan kings. I loved this video espicially learning about Denmark and Sweden but I think you shuold at least mentionend some of the absolute wild things Harald did when he was younger Anyways love your vids they are very fun and interesting to learn about new things Also sorry for my bad english I am from Norway and my english isnt very good

The most interesting character to play as in 1066 ck3 as a Norse is Botulf Frille. He's an independent count-level asatru faith north of Sweden.

Cool video! One of my favourite scandinavian playthroughs was with the house of Sverker, a vassal in the kingdom of Sweden at game-start. I took over the Swedish crown as them and I even managed to win the crusade and switched to play as a Swedish king of Jerusalem. Historically they became Swedish kings and had a fierce rivalry with the house of Erik, but the Eriks doesn't exist in-game sadly

It would be nice to know if the Finnish leaders have any historical background in the 1066 start, as I know, as a Finn, that the period before the crusades into Finland is not well documented.
@jakalordarkblood4331
@jakalordarkblood4331 6 месяцев назад
From my understanding, the leadership in the area is a big "shrug". No one wrote anything down and the crusaders sure didn't document who used to be in charge. Mostly a bunch of disparate towns and villages lead by the villagers and townsfolk themselves.

Didn't see it mentioned in the video but the character Sven Kolsson, who is Duke of Östergötland in 1066, is the aforementioned "Blot-Sweyn" who'd take over Sweden and reaffirm the riksblot. He is also interestingly enough shown as the progenitor of the Sverkers, who would later become the royal house of Sweden for a period in the 1100s. It's also said that Blot-Sweyn is the progenitor of the House of Eric (named after Saint King Eric of Sweden) who would be house Sverkers main rivals concerning the Swedish throne during the 1100s.

Another interesting fact is that there's an unlanded courtier named Ingevald who is of the house of Bjälbo. This character is presumably based on the historically questionable "Ingevald Folkesson" who is said to have been the father of Folke the Fat, the historical founder of the (later) royal house of Bjälbo and thus the progenitor of Birger Jarl, the founder of the capital city of Sweden, Stockholm, as well as according to many historians Sweden itself due to his centralization efforts during his effective rule of Sweden as Jarl of Sweden.

Jamtland is interesting to me. De-jure norwegian, yet independent and tribal (but also christian and norwegian culture?). There's prob no historic basis for the character himself, but surely they didnt just make up the situation itself?
@Coteoki
@Coteoki 7 месяцев назад
Jämtland was actually independent for a couple of hundred of year in what usually considered a peasant republic. It was a bit democratic and from what I read it was settled by Norwegians fleeing from Harald Fairhair.

You lost me when you really had to put that Brit bias in against Hardrada. Respect this man's Varangian legacy, he was more travelled and more "viking" than even the mythological Ragnar Lothbrok.

Since you are so close to poor and wild pagan europe, i like to ask:. How would a beacon based alliance network work in ck3 ? It is known that Finnish and Karelian people used a warning system, where beacon fires were used, when outsiders tried to invade land. Basically locals fled to the hill forts and warriors were assembled to counter invaders. In the game, i like to think this is a mechanic where the chieftain can call defensive aid all other Finnish/Karelian culture rulers, that are on their de facto homeland. The area where Modern day Finland is was so poor and underpopulated that many neighboring rulers just ignored the area and only after the 12 century area was christianized and subjugated. Would this work on a game ? Also yes, Tolkien also studied Finnish language and history.

Håkan Stenkilsson in CK3 seems to represent Håkan the Red, who was supposedly a king ruling during the time of when Halsten became king. While there is speculation that Håkan was at the very least related to Stenkil, he is not a confirmed son of his like Halsten and Inge are. Then again, the state of kings in Sweden up until the mid-1100s or even a bit later is a total mess considering the sources are few and also suck rotten beaver tails in terms of reliability.
