Perfectly explained. I'm an Irish drummer living in Spain and every flamenco guitarist explained flamenco to me with a standardised displaced counting to a sequence they called the compass. However here though the core principles are described in more precise detail and I needed it because the descriptions I got from others did little to help me hold on for dear life when they played matrix bending phrases in their flamenco loops. Here though I can now begin to correlate the guitar work ontop of mine and now begin hearing the obscuring of the compass in the moments the guitar parts are made complex

I’m so glad! It is tricky indeed and we all have our biases (guitarist’s bias, dancer’s bias etc…). You might understand a lot more with this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-B4yMlZTt8tc.html Thanks for watching and for the comment!

FINALLY! I'm a classical singer and the first thing I do when I look at a new piece is learn the rhythm. I have been trying to find someone to teach me compas basics because, although rhythm is a strength of mine, I can't count in 'flamenco'. THANK YOU!

@@FlamencoMAPS Guess the compas in 12 we might call a 12/8. where there is 12 beats and written as 8th notes?
@FlamencoMAPS
@FlamencoMAPS Год назад
@@dimension2788 I wish it were that easy ;-) The first half of the hemiola is usually written in 6/8 (3+3 beats) and the second half in 3/4 (2+2+2 beats). It makes the time signature change every 6 beats, which is not practical to read. You can also write everything in 3/4, or 6/4, or 12/4, always marking the accents in their place... But these time signatures imply that the first beat of the measure is a strong beat, which may be true for the bulería or the guajira, but not necessarily for the soleá or the alegría. There are several ways to write flamenco compasses in an "academic" way, each with advantages and disadvantages...
