With many players having experienced their first From Software game this year, it's a great time to look back at their other games and see what to play next. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice (from the developers of Elden Ring, Bloodborne, and Dark Souls) is their previous most recent major release, and it's also one of their more distinct among their modern titles, making it a great choice for both newcomers and players who have played a few more of their other games.
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is on sale now! www.sekirotheg...

Big thanks to Activision for sponsoring this video. Sekiro's different approach in design philosophy gives it its own identity in a way that really distinguishes it from Miyazaki's other games. With many players having concluded their first playthrough of Elden Ring, Sekiro's a great game to follow it up with. It's similar enough you won't miss a beat, but different enough it'll be a refreshing change of pace.

I think Sekiro is the one "Souls" game that could be considered separate from the others. Even with Elden Ring diverging from many staples of the series, Sekiro is still incredibly unique. The singular combat system, a traditional story, a traditional protagonist, the inclusion of a map, being able to rematch bosses, a skill tree, a sub-title, the focus on action over RPG mechanics, PAUSING. And yet, despite all of that, Sekiro is still unquestionably a Souls game, due to doors needing to be opened from specific sides. Edit: Also stealth and jumping.

What they nailed in Sekiro was the feeling of personal growth the more you play. At first you have no idea where anyone is, how they fight, and how to differentiate between their unblockables, so exploring and fighting are a cautious affair if not a downright struggle. Once you do know where to go and when to deflect/dodge/jump/sneak/pressure, you fly through levels and bosses alike and it's so satisfying.

Something that stands out to me about Sekiro is how Kuro changes the player's relationship with the game. With Kuro, you have a strong reason to succeed, which is his well-being. In addition to directing the plot, it also offers a more pointed moral compass than the rest of the games. Ignoring the Shura ending, Sekiro doesn't usually commit immoral acts like killing innocents (he literally can't kill NPCs).

I tried some other routes then to learn the combat but I struggled a lot against every miniboss (even against some of the normal enemies) and some I couldn't even kill. So from always having a learning curve in these games with quite fast improvements and getting better results after like 10 or 20 tries (if even necessary) in Sekiro it felt like improving a little in the beginning but then being completely stuck and without really having many options for tackling my problems in a different way which made me drop it then.
@oniichandame48
@oniichandame48 2 года назад
@@Moschel91 instead of throwing because i find the bosses too hard, i threw because i find it too "easy". Its not like i beat the bosses in a few tries. It still took hours, but to me, it was dependent on Whether i was focused long enough to last the whole fight. All i did nearly every boss fight is r1 twice (and twice only since usually the bosses parry your third hit), and then parry once, and get back to r1'ing twice, rinse and repeat and eventually the boss gets killed. I only lose because i wasnt consistent and parried wrongly at certain occassions. But all the wins is from this repetitive fighting style. Thats why i dont quite see the fun since there is no "rhythm" or "flow" as other claims. The boss never gets to showcase his full moveset and all i do is repeat the same thing over and over, same with every boss. This is quite different from the other souls games, although they are also mainly about "spamming rolls"(or parry in sekiro's case) . The boss has poise, i have to respect their moveset and only punish after they finished it. This makes the bosses seem to have more variety. Meanwhile sekiro bosses get staggered when you hit them, hence why my stupid trick works. Anyways, if you want to make it easier, you might as well try my trick of r1 twice, parry. If you dont mind making the gameplay boring as fuck.

While some of the Souls games do better with experimenting and using a variety of builds, none of them have the refined boss and enemy encounters that Sekiro has, partially due to the Souls games having to accommodate such a large pool of different playstyles. When I went into a boss battle in Sekiro I knew I would be dying multiple times because you're forced to have to learn the bosses moveset for when the sparse openings for you to attack present themselves. Meanwhile I can fumble my way through most Souls games bosses the first try because the fights are much faster.

Despite how aggressive and fast paced Sekiro is, it actually feels more like a “defensive” game instead of an offensive one. Yes you attack, but you must also deflect and wear down your enemies through attrition, rather than just raw damage. In a way, the speed of the game and low latency of deflects actually facilitates this defensive style. Latency in your actions is low, so you are able to react to your opponents. This is opposed to using great swords in other From games. They are so slow you have to go on the offensive as you don’t always have time or the speed to play reactively.

I'll play Elden Ring From Software games complete each other ❤️

i get what you're saying, but i feel like sekiro is the most agressive fromsoft game as even your defensive options are offensive in some capacity, like the deflect, stomp, or mikiri, or even how the prosthetic tools can lead into combos. and that's what sets it apart : you don't have to say "okay, now's the part where i dodge, i'll attack after" : even what you use to defend yourself makes you progress towards defeating the boss. couple that with the fact that most bosses will actually react to or stagger from your attacks, and you've got the most offensive centered game in their library

Him having only the katana lets me wondering, how it would be if they would do a game specifically for every other major weapon type we know from soulsborne respectively in a style that would benefit them the most. From the big bong hammers, axes or ultra greatswords to daggers, swords, or spears. Maybe even a great focus on shields or bows. Even solo magic could be interesting. Big weapon types would be less agile, but their incredible strength could be used to actually break things, like houses or even bigger bosses. Axes could maybe even cut limbs of these behemoths. Magicians could be more floating or maybe flying. Spears and swords could be paired with shields and have a more natural fighting style because of it. There is so much potential, when you can create worlds around these weapons and their playstyle.
@kindlingking
@kindlingking 2 года назад
I don't see how they can implement great hammers - those are just to slow and would be very awkward to block and deflect with. Ultras could use fighting style similar to Guts' in PS2 game - a lot of spinning motions that build up monentum of your attacks (faster and more damage), but also drag your character in the same direction. Magic and bows, I think, just don't fit in this type of combat unless it's strictly supplementary (maybe you could jump and shoot a couple of arrows like Genichiro style as your analogue for prosthetic/combat art).
@tarille1043
@tarille1043 2 года назад
@@kindlingking If they implemented great hammers in a realistic way, rather than their staple "500000 ton brick on the end of stick" form they'd be fine, just like greatswords and ultras (Given that most "Greatswords" in Souls games are actually the length of some longswords and many "Ultras" are similar length to real greatswords. Just FromSoft adds several zeroes to their portrayed weight...) Magic can be easily done. You just have to fine tune cast times, aiming and damage types (I.e. You have to judge what spell you can use during a given opening, you have to hit the correct location on the enemy and use an element fit for what you're attacking). It's just a matter of refining their rather crude magic system used in the Souls series into something more elegant and interactive, in the same way the Souls combat was refined into Sekiro's more fluid approach. Bows also have tons of options, especially if you focus more on shortbow usage rather than longbow/greatbow where you're using low draw weight to quickly fire off arrows at closer distances. Add in arrow types beyond "Just an arrow but now with an element/status" like making traps with tripwire arrows, locking enemies down with Sticky White Stuff arrows or rope arrows (See: Horizon), combining arrow types such as oil arrows to set up for fire arrows to ignite a target. Add in similar aiming features as with magic users where you have to aim at specific weak points. - To say nothing of potential stealth gameplay (Such as shooting out lanterns to create darkness to sneak through. Using special arrows to lure enemies to locations to take them out) The best thing is if they did a Sekiro-like for all the staple methods of attack... It could lead to a far more epic "Elden Ring 2" game by using the newly refined combat systems in lieu of the clunky Souls ones.
@psychopath682
@psychopath682 2 года назад
@@kindlingking You might have misunderstood me a little bit. They all should get a style that is different from sekiro's and befits their playstyle instead. Not a sekiro with a new weapon, but a totally different world where the weapon works perfectly in. So you're right, big hammers with the blocking from sekiro wouldn't work that well, so would high jumping and climbing, but that's the point. These would work differently for that game. And your Guts suggestion fits perfectly in what I meant. I don't agree. You have a lot of freedom when you work with magic, so creating a game around it, would work really well, I'm sure. You just need to know how to implement it. Maybe they would need to work on the projectile spam, but even that could work in a game solely made for that combat. Bows are surely harder to do, you're right. The game would need much more enemies with range attacks obviously and melee attackers would be hard to fight against as well. So even more emphasis on stealth would benefit this game the most, I think. There were pretty successful souls-likes with guns, so one with bows wouldn't be impossible.

The rematch with Genichiro was incredible. I die countless time during that, but once the flow of battle clicked, it felt amazing. Especially when your perfect parries clangs, the sound effects of successful mikiri counters or successful jumping and countering, sound like a beautiful, satisfying tune that add so much to the experience. The best part of the combat is that your successful defend also add to your progress of defeating the bosses (by breaking their posture), making it much more engaging than the just a simple dodge roll. You can also interrupt enemies when they're executing a combo, for example throwing shuriken at enemies who jump to use an attack like Lady Butterfly. Instead of the bosses punish you for being greedy, you can also punish them. So overall the combat doesn't just require timely dodges, but suitable respond to an enemy moveset.

Sekiro is a triumph, and my favorite moment that I think about constantly, comes from the purification ending. Sekiro takes hold of the mortal blade, announces his death as condemnation of the last immortal, and his final words to a slumbering lord Kuro are that he live on and discover all a mortal life can offer. Then we get a shot, a short, simple shot of Sekiro holding the blade to his neck. Even in this, after all he’s gone through, he hesitates just one moment. To breathe, to steel himself, before doing the deed. And the Sakura flowers that fall from his body perfectly encapsulate his entire character arc, its an ending that never fails to move me.

While Sekiro's combat is more like a rhythm game, it's a personal preference for everyone. For most people, they do like diversity and the ability to use multiple tools at your disposal to solve a situation/get over a hurdle. This is why I believe there's more of the souls series than of Sekiro. I personally prefer this diversity that souls games offer, but I do like that rhythm tuning of Sekiro as well, just not too precise like they did in Sekiro because then it isn't accessible for even such a niche genre of people.

Hey look, my favorite new subscribed channel of 2022 does a two-parter on my favorite game of all time. This made my day. Sekiro was a masterpiece. It takes the faster and more aggressive combat of Bloodborne (my *previous* favorite game of all time), favors a rhythmic back-and-forth of trading purposeful blows in lieu of high-speed dodges and incentive for desperation attacks, and proceeds to expertly file down and polish away any rough edges or impurities that the open-ended RPG elements of Soulsbourne past always contended with, as your video points out very well. The story is definitely an artfully thematic and tautly paced narrative for an action game, but I think it goes further and resonates in a timeless way, with how it shows three generations of a once-great family and its retainers clashing over how to save themselves at a time of moral corruption and violent upheaval, with potentially tragic results. While it doesn't go all out on lengthy dialogue or ponderous world-building, it knows what it wants to say and knows how to say it, with an economy of scope that keeps its themes of struggle, death, rebirth and redemption front-and-center. Sekiro's journey from broken down reject, not even worth the effort to be bound in captivity, to unstoppable force of nature, defying every obstacle *including death* to regain his purpose and uphold his oath, is something to behold. It resonated with me as I emerged from my own absolute personal Armageddon, giving me inspiration to face my challenges with mindfulness and sense of purpose, and I ultimately credit the game's strong Buddhist sensibilities as being my gateway to Zen Buddhism, which has helped me discover how to achieve and maintain balance in a world wobbling on the brink. This is an Activision ruse to piggyback off another game's huge success that I can *100% get behind.* If you liked Elden Ring and want more, play this. If you liked Elden Ring but felt it got a little too copy-pasted and imbalanced, definitely play this. If you can appreciate an immaculately thought out action game, and long for a gameplay experience that is both white-knuckle aggression and laser-focused mindfulness, stop doing yourself a disservice and play this game. I also recommend it to those who like great game stories too. Looking forward to part 2!

@@Tw0DrunkGuys I think it's both about being able to customise a character - both visually and in terms of Equipment - and having narrative choices. Glad to see the attention the game is getting again. It's my favorite game after Twilight Princess, and I think it will always be a classic to me going forward. The fact you parry the attacks of enemies and bosses over dodging and poking really make you feel powerful and better immerse you into the game and fights I find. You'll fell like you're actually battling with a sword saint, master ninja, or giant monkey with no head etc. Probably some of the best action gameplay that's satisfying to learn and master since like the Arkham games. It may not be as big as Elden Ring size or time wise and the story (while being amazing as usual from FromSoft) may be shorter and more straightforward as other entries, but if you're a souls or Action game fan and you haven't tried it yet I recommend it highly. Although stealth in Sekiro is better overall than it is in elden ring, its still not a true stealth game compared to like Metal gear or others, but it still does it overall well. The number of ways to play and approach situations definitely contributed to elden rings design philosophy. Last note, if your a player that raged at Melenia, that boss is literally Sekiro. A warrior with a katana, prosthetic gear, afflicted with rot (Sekiro is afflicted Dragon Rot similar to Melenia's Scarlet Rot that intensifies on use), and serve a divine childlike leader (Kuro the Divine Heir similar to Miquella an enternal child). Even her Water Fowl dance is very similar to Sekiro's Floating/Spiral Cloud Passage abilities, so if you ever want to be essentially Melenia for an entire playthrough, Sekiro is the game to play.

While having played and finished every SoulsBorneRing: Shadows die twice Game I really dislike Sekiro, for the combat feels boring and I really do not like dex builds in general. Being forced into this build while having every other game of the series allow you to build your own experience in combat felt wrong. Yes the movement was a great plus, but that is the only quality that even made me finish the game. Bosses felt less of a spectacle, except the odd few, the combat felt like I was always on the defence and the story felt off, even for souls games. Additionally the mechanic of being able to come back to life after dying also made me lazy while fighting, knowing that I can just revive and get a free hit in. I can get why people would like Sekiro, but at least for me it is barely better than base game Dark Souls 2.

I love dark souls/elden ring but I don't understand this obsession with different builds. Build doesn't change combat at all. It doesn't matter what weapon you using it's always the same - doge/block, wait for the opening, attack. And if it's ranged - keep your distance and shoot arrows/spells. Yeah, different animations and damage numbers but no real difference. Often you just have to dodge long combos, there's no other options. But in Sekiro you can be effective all the time, there's no waiting, no "don't be greedy". Enemy combo - deflect and break their posture, unblockable attack - use it against them, attack every moment you can if you confident in your reflexes. On top of that - prosthetics, health/posture balance, stealth and great bosses. I love other souls games but it's for their amazing worlds and exploration. Builds just let you create unique character to reflect your journey.
@irmiwolf
@irmiwolf 2 года назад
@@maksimk1243 well for me sekiros combat was basically block/dodge until you can press a button to win, if you want you can add the use of items/prosthetics. But for the other games it did make a big difference in combat, what build you use. You can have the same style as seliro, just with actually having to deal dmg, by using a shield and dex weapon, you can have a combat where every attack has to be timed well or you get punished by using a strength weapon, you can avoid group fights by picking off enemies from the distance with spells or ranged weapons. And you had to adapt to the boss not just by learning how long you have to block and which attacks to dodge, but also by having to adapt to the arena, the speed and size of the enemy. Like for example the Moonlight Butterfly from DS1 you could dodge the attacks and wait for it to land or if you have a ranged build you can attack even while it is flying around.

Happy for you to finally get sponsored, Zullie! While the comment section is filled with the usual unconditional praise for every facet of FROM's design, and I appreciate and respect the community's passion for their games, I feel I have a very divergent feeling with Sekiro as a whole. I feel some of its design is actually a lot more clunky/faulty than people seem to admit, reminiscent of a lot of old FROM mistakes (pre-souls era, where most of my favorite FROM games are /from/... haha). To keep most relevance with the video, one of my main critiques of the game is the boss design. I feel this is where the experience falls apart the most. (tl;dr: the bosses in Sekiro are extremely linear / only one designed solution or approach) The video explains that, yes, Sekiro is more of a pure action game, instead of an action-rpg-- maybe so far as to say it's closer to a character action game similar to that of Bayonetta or DMC. These are all games, like Sekiro, that have a central character (or a few in DMC's case) that has a fixed moveset in addition to a customizable toolkit to give the combat a bit more personalization (ie: the weapons in Bayonetta/DMC, the skills/tools in Sekiro). In Bayonetta/DMC, while the bosses have weapon combinations that are definitely more effective against them than others, it feels as though any combination/approach you want to take is still designed to be viable and enjoyable. Whereas, in Sekiro, I feel on the whole the bosses boil down to "which tool/item/etc. trivializes this encounter?" This leaves Sekiro's boss encounter design feeling more like a point-and-click style "try the item(s) you think works against the problem until you get it right" type of puzzle rather than a test of your overall creativity and prowess with the given tools at your disposal. There's a lot less freedom in the designed approaches, leaving the boss fights feeling extremely antiquated and rigid, like some sort of classic NES-era encounter design. I don't want to go too in-depth to avoid spoilers, but the most egregious example of this I can think of off the top of my head is how the loaded umbrella is basically required for certain fights. I feel like this focus on "one correct solution" is major design trap that has poisoned the game's design philosophy in many areas. I think it's possible to both have a clear, focused vision with a small handful of mechanics while still encouraging freedom in the player's chosen approaches to potential problems/encounters. A game like Super Mario 64 demonstrates this well. Everyone can do the same four or five moves that Mario has, but any given approach to obtaining a specific star can vary wildly. The player is given a lot of freedom to create their own approach to solving the problem (navigating the level to collect the star) with this focused, predefined moveset. I think Sekiro does demonstrate something similar to this with the general level design, which is where I think Sekiro shines the brightest, as you have a lot of freedom to push through any given level in a variety of ways, mostly thanks to the grappling hook, ledge mechanics, and very intelligent use of spatial verticality. It makes you feel smart/clever for taking a path you feel that you personally routed, even if it's all by design... and I feel this sort of evocation of the prideful wit of the player befits the idea of playing as a shinobi far more, making me really wish that the other areas of design could have followed suit.

I think one of the most satisfying changes which sets Sekiro apart from the rest of the Soulsborne series is your place within the story. In Demon's/Darks Souls and Bloodborne it feels like you've been dropped into an environment which has already dealt with countless experiences which have altered the world and it's up to you to put the right pieces together in order to get the bigger picture of what has happened and what your role is in the world presently. It's less about creating a traditional narrative and more about thrusting the player into a place where they need to determine what is happening around them and whether their course of actions were worth it in the end. With Sekiro though it feels as if you are helping create the tale which others will be sharing for years to come. It's up to you to explore the world and tackle each of the challenges along the way, from supernatural entities to renowned warriors/shinobi from across Ashina and Japan. There's still lore to appreciate which helps provide context for the other characters and locations but at its core it feels like you're taking part in an actual legendary folk tale which can end in tragedy or optimism.

Sekiro, like its mentioned in the video, has a narrow focus but thats what made me love it way more than any of the other souls games. Insted of worrying about what build or weapon is best you just focus on the mechanics and story of the game. It was this game that made me want to try the other ones and i always try to make my character into " sekiro" or " wolf" when I played elden ring or dark souls. This game is a masterpiece and will forever hold a place in the top games that i ever played.

I only recently beat sekiro the concept of deflecting the opponent's attacks was a bit difficult for me to grasp at first but once I did I loved every second of it

Sekiro is my all time favorite Fromsoft game and it will likely never get replaced. While i enjoy other FS games, i'm not a fan of how slow the movement of older games are, and personally hate how vague the lore of them. It was the design, vibe, music and challenge that had me play them. Sekiro has none of the issues i have with them, it's fast, clear story, visually stunning, well balanced. Bonus point for setting in ancient Japan, the theme that i love most. 10/10 imo

This video is great for several reasons: 1. Unexpected Sekiro quality content. 2. Zullie getting sponsored. Yay. 3. Tenchu soundtrack. S2

sekiro is the first fromsoft game I mastered, truly love it as well as seeing you getting sponsored 3 years after the game’s release.

I have found so many games that give a rush like partying perfectly in sekiro, soon I’ll even need a second hand!

I'm sure that's what this is about. Why sponsor a 3 year old game that's already in most major platforms (so, not a port)?

A very fitting choice for the music in the video. Tenchu was one of my favourite franchises... after it faded away for some time, Sekiro was the game that scratched the itch of stealth assassination.

Sekiros probably my favourite fromsoft in terms of gameplay. It's gameplay after you learn to not r1 and l1 spam and add in the added in gauntlets made the game so fun, I still speedrun it more than any other soulsborne just because I have it on pc, and it's speedrunning is fairly easy too
