This is the third time I watched this upload. This helped me immensely. After you helped me discover a gel allergy. This video did not just alleviated the extreme pain by giving me the valor to cut my nails shorter and shorter every other day because it was painful, but you also game me much needed hope. For some reason the nails in my thumbs were the most damaged and I am still growing and cutting them out. Thank you again!

I wish there was this video when I experienced onycholysis a few times on my toenails to put my discomfort at ease. I used to dance Argentine tango and twice my second toenail experienced trauma during practice. I had to cut the entire nail plate and I felt declawed when walking, even with flat shoes I could not grip properly. I stubbed my large toenail walking in Old Montreal and had to cut it several times (imagine an obtuse triangle and no side wall on one side) because of lifting after regrowth. It required about 8-9 months for both toenails to re-grow properly. Thank you, Anna, for this important video.

Wonderful advice! I have a very bad habit of ripping off my acrylics/gels. I know, I need to stop. Well yesterday I ripped them off and discovered this on 2 of my nails, most definitely caused by repeated trauma. Mine are not nearly as separated as hers, but I was still sure my nails were all going to fall off and I would be stuck with nail-less stumps for the rest of my life! I was panicking, but not anymore after reading more about it and watching videos on how to help heal it. So here we go on a healthy nail journey! ❤

I lost both my big toenails simultaneously many years ago. I went to an all night club and was dancing all night wearing a pair of boots that my friend had lent to me, which were a size too small for me. I hadn't realised that the ends of my big toes were continuously banging against the inside of the boots all night snd badly traumatising the nails. They went black over the next few days and then both fell off completely. It took a year for them to grow back.

This, and so many of your videos and the stories shared by others in the comments, have been helpful to me as I go through this. I was doing my nails for quite a while using poly gel with no trouble, but when I switched to full-coverage tips there were many "operator error" issues (mostly pinching from the tip sizes being incorrect, but also using bad products) and finally I admitted defeat when the nail plate lifted on several fingers. It's been so hard to accept the end of having extensions, or what I consider to be "pretty nails." I'm looking at six months of growth, minimum, and no Christmas nails, and it's just devastating. But, I have a game plan and I'm determined to keep them healthy, short, and wait until they regrow.

Better to be healthy and safe, there are other ways to beautifully decorate nails with minimal damage. You could also try using press ons with stickers if you want play with length here and there.

Thank you for the video! I have this problem in multiple nails. I also have psoriasis though and feel that that is the cause of the issue for me. In my fngernails, there is no psoriasis skin underneath, just separation. But in my toenails I sometimes have a bit of a build up of compacted psoriasis skin under the nail. On my toes I do cut it down and gently remove the unhealthy skin. I have not cut my fingernails down since I love to wear nail polish strips on them every week. And I wasn't sure with the cause being the psoriasis if cutting it down to then let it regrow would correct the problem or if it would continue to recur. When I am strict with a raw vegan anti-inflammatory diet and having food grade diotamaceous earth each day, I see improvement in the attachment of my fingernails very quickly. I just struggle to do this diet strictly for a long time because it is very restrictive. The success I see with it though makes me think that controlling the inflammation internally is the key to this healing for me. What do you think?

I actually had an injury on my toenail 5 years ago /bad cut got infected during holiday in Montreal and its took more than 24 months to heal etc, with many wrong techniques proposed by doctors! As I swim a lot every day and always use nail polish for months I seem to ruin now both toenails (rather long nails with coat kept forever must of dried outer layers, they cracked /portions disconnected yesterday)! Horribly looking and I am scared to get further problems as it very exposed one nail corner - any EMERGENCY advice !? stop swimming / take off the rest of nail polish ? as both dried portions look bad...Thank you for your professionalism !

I had a similar event with a toenail after I stumped the toe. All is well, but I lost the entire nail. It slowly loosened entirely, and I kept trimming off the loose part. Finally, the last of it came off and all the exposed nail bed was rough and dry. I kept it clean, wore socks, and had no pain, except the stump! It's slowly but surely growing back. I hope it is completely reattached and will grow to the original length. Your videos have been helpful in many ways.😊 😊

Hi Anna, thank you for sharing this. I am wondering: I have damaged my big toe nail about 1,5 years ago. It has led to more than the top half of the nail being completely seperated. It seems like the nail bed underneath is not sensitive anymore, it just feels/seems like skin. Do you think it would be too late to apply this method of cutting it back and letting it regrow? I am hesitant because it's a big part of the nail and I don't want to end up with something worse looking. On the other hand I am afraid that the damage will extend even further over time (even though I'm keeping the nail short). I would love your thoughts on it

I got a question,I’ve been to two different dermatology centers and seen like 3-4 different specialist,5 different medications that made my thumb nail turn yellow from a white.they took a clipping and said to omnichosis (might be spelling it wrong) it’s now almost over my whole nail.should I cut off the discolored lifted part of the nail? At the moment, the only thing working is oral medication but they have me coming back every other month with no positive results.I’ve been battling this for a year or two now.sadly it’ll look like it’s healing, and will somewhat heal but then starts to grow back and spread really fast

Hi, I injured my big toenail and now the side has detached from the nail bed (it's shaped like a triangle with the base at the edge of the nail pointing downwards). The point is still attached to my nail bed, so should I still cut it off? I don't know if the rest of the nail is still attached, since it's bleeding a lot. How should I treat it? Should I apply betadine and bandage it?
@TheSalonLife

If anything is bleeding and there is pain or inflammation this is no longer cosmetic issue but a medical issue. I suggest seeing a medical professional.

@@TheSalonLife it was bleeding a lot, but no inflammation. I bandaged it and used betadine, and took off the band aid the next night. I let the wound air out every night and apply a new bandaid in the morning. The nail itself looks to be doing okay, it didn't completely detach from the nail bed. Just the sides and I think the top aswell. Should I still see a medical professional even if it's not very bad?

@@TheSalonLife Hi!!! I just cut my nail out this morning. Been holding it off and hoping it would reattach on its own but that was just wishful thinking! I cannot pin point exactly what happened to my nail and what caused the lifting . But my nails were grown out really long and every once in awhile that thumb nail would get stuck and hit on things cause of how long it was. So I’m thinking it got detached from one of those times.

I crushed my left thumb in a machine in the year 2000. Being a male, working with engines and obviously dirt, I have had no success whatsoever - in the regrowth ans re-attachment of my thumb nail. The Thumb Nail always grows - as it should. The 'damage' is the whole width of the nail, right down to the half-moon. There have been periods of 'sheer excitement' where I felt that the problem was getting better. This was always followed by disappointment. After a time period of 24 years with this problem, it is only today, that I discovered the technical name of Onycholysis. I frequently use a diamond Dremel in order to remove the whole nail (carefully) right down to the half moon. My personal thoughts, is that the whole underrnail surface needs to be thoroughly cleaned by a surgeon, and then totally wrapped to prevent ingress of dirt or pathogens, but (at the same time) keeping it completely dry. I have just learned to live with this problem, and it is encouraging to see some other people who win against this problem. It's not an easy fix! greetings from Australia.

Dorogaya Anna, I' d love to know your thoughts about tretinoine (don' t ask me why but I suspect that your glowing lovely skin already knows Miss Treti✨). I' ve been using it for yeeeeears (currently 47yo) in my face, neck and hands + sleeping cotton 🧤 without the distal phalanx piece to alllow the mani breath). I' m not gonna talk about the wonders of _The Gold Standard_ because we all know what happens when used properly, consistently and responsibly but, since I' ve experienced such a notorious improvement on my brows, I' m tempted to apply it also on my nails and surrounding area. Would be a pleasure if you had any experience with retinoids and nails. Meanwhile, if ain' t broke, don' t fix it. I' ll continue with my beloved trusty jojoba oil. Many maaaany thanks in advanced and have a lovely weekend! 🧛🏻‍♀️🖤.

Hello :) Funny you ask.... but I'm a HUGE believer in tretinoin. I've been using it for yeeeeeeears as well (I'm 50 now) and I now use the strongest version so the 0.1% daily with no irritation to my skin. I also use it on my neck, chest and tops of my hands. BUT, I find that my over plucked eyebrows don't like the tretinoin and tend to fall out more (especially the over plucked, weak hairs that barely hang on). When I stop tretinoin on my forehead they tend to regrow a bit on top. You have to be very consistent with sunblock when using tretinoin so I would not be using it around the nails. I will stick to jojoba :)

@@TheSalonLife Ooops, yes🥺 overplucked follicles don' t love treti, that' s why you experience weakness and falling. Mines are 100% natural, that' s why. Thanks A LOT for your time and your valuable jojoba advice, Anna. 🧛🏻‍♀️🖤 Edit: Have you tried to isolate your brows with a thick layer of petrolatum so the treti doesn' t reach them?

Yes, I built up to using this strength, I started using the 0.1% couple years ago, before that it was years of 0.05% Yes, I'm putting a thick layer of vaseline on my brows before applying tretinoin for months now but I think throughout the night everything swooshes together anyway (I'm a side sleeper) It's terrible that I have to choose between healthy skin and brows 🥹

But NO😭. I only feel truly rested sleeping the frog position (butterfly in ballet) like a baby born. I've just cut it back but was wondering if it's safe to wear polish as it heals? I have thin brittle nails and polish is the only thing that has kept them from not doing this on every nail (it used to happen often with splits on ridges on multiple nails). Anyway, just wondering your thoughts on polish (even just a clear base coat) or no. Thank you in advance! Your videos are always so helpful! 🤗
