Anna, you are doing a huge public service by educating your viewers on how to care for nails in a healthy and natural way. There are some positively terrifying videos out there promoting what very unsafe and damaging techniques. Thanks to you and MSL for all your hard work.
@Steinru73
@Steinru73 2 года назад
It appears that the natural nail has been over filed thereby becoming so thin that it cannot retain its bond with the nail bed. The new nail will grow out. File the free edge very short until the whole nail has grown out from the use of enhancements. The new nail will reattach to the nail bed as long as it’s kept clean and dry. Do not use a tool to clean debris where it’s separated from the nail bed. You will probably damage the nail bed and the new nail will not reattach.

This is one main reason why I don’t get me nails done at a salon, except for pedicures. I’ve been to a few salons local to me, and they are so rough with gel/acrylic removal. One place buffed off several layers off my natural nail and left them so red and sensitive. I do very lightly buff after cuticle removal. I’m not a pro, so I do a 1-2 pass to help remove anything I might have missed.

I wish I had seen your video on gel polish allergic reaction before I had it. If you let me know how, I can send you my photos. At first, I was a little bummed that I wouldn’t be able to do a gel or acrylic manicure anymore, but I’ve honestly always preferred the look of natural nails. And above all, I am all about health over aesthetics! Your educational videos have encouraged me to pursue a more natural way to take care of nails for the rest of my life. Gel polish will not be missed here! Thank you 😊

Thank you for this video. I stumbled upon this when I've been struggling to get my thumb nail to attach to the nail bed after a lot of picking and biting. Thanks to this, I realized I was doing everything wrong and possibly suffocating the nail with a layer of nail polish on the nail (Was to try and stop/hide flaking that I would want to pick) and using a combonation of tea tree oil and Vaseline on the nail. I'm afraid the vaseline would've been too much and over suffocating the nail bed. Thank you as this is a hard thing to find solutions for on the internet.

Just FYI, I had something similar, Ring finger always seems to be a big problem. After studying what the problem could be the suggestion is to see a dermatologist to determine the problem. Typical problems, Allergy, Fungs or a mineral deficiency. I found in my problem was that I had a stomach issue, probably SIBO. A probiotic that is soil based took care of the problem. It does grow out and get better.

Not only are you professional, educated, willing to share knowledge and lovely - you're also very beautiful!!! can you recommend any nailpolish (not a gel and not the dazzle dry - not available in Poland I guess) that stay longer on the nails than 2 days?
@TheSalonLife
@TheSalonLife 2 года назад
Hi Marta, All of them should last longer than 2 days. If they aren't lasting longer than 2 days then it will come down to application or the condition of the nails. If the nails are damaged nothing is going to last, not even Dazzle Dry. A nail polish we would recommend that we think is good that you can find in Poland would be Catrice. Hope that helps - MSL

Anna! Thank you so very much! I think this is my problem. To reiterate as per the email I sent you I have weak nails to begin with and had builder gel put on because after a yr of doing my own mani's with regular polish i still had a few problem nails and thought the builder gel would keep my split nails together ...I was so wrong...it made my nails worse. I have nail bed separation on my left thumb, white spots, deeper ridges, and my left thumb nail not only split but the piece cracked off, luckily it isn't painful. The nail plate we see and 'decorate' is dead tissue so how do we nourish and protect the new growth that we can't see ? Does a good polish or nail treatment penetrate? I still plan on sending you photos when I remove my polish this weekend. It's so wonderful that you are doing this---great to see your lovely face. Now we have a face to go with your voice. We should have a facebook page--then we can could all chat about our nail issues!

Hi Anna - I have just discovered your RU-vid channel because I’ve had some bad experiences with my nails. I used to have very healthy and strong nails and decided to start gel nailpolish 2 years ago (from bad and good technicians). As I was having some lifting, I decided to take off the gel myself with a file and discovered some greenies (very bad idea). On top of that I believe I damaged my nails as I can see my nails are peeling and they are very soft. I started treating the greenies with tea tree oil and white vinegar/water baths. I have an appointment book with my nail tech in 2weeks but unsure if I should give my nails a break or have them protected with a layer of builder gel ? I’ve been binge watching your videos for the 3days now, hope I discovered your channel before xx

A few months ago i developed onycholysis on both my pinkies, i didn’t think much of it and proceeded to do my regular gel manicure. A week later i could tell something was off so i removed my gel and each of my nails had the onycholysis. After hours of research i was convinced i developed dermatitis, but by watching this video I’m not sure anymore. While watching my nails regrow i can clearly see they were over filed. However i’m a little scared to reapply gel considering the amount of time its taking for my nails to regrow.

So it is possible to reattach the nail plate to the nail bed? My nail beds are very short cause I used the bite my nails when I was a kid and I notice that the white part of my nails "open", they don't follow the curvature of the nail bed, it even hurts on the corners s cause I feel the nails pulling up

Hello! I'm very new to nail care and I'm also experiencing Onycholysis on a couple of my fingers. One of them are currently growing back, however, I do have several questions. 1. How much of the separated nail do I file down or cut off? 2. Can I also wear nail polish while the nail is growing back? 3. Can I use jojoba bush butter instead of oil? At work, I use body butters after I wash my hands. Thank you!

Long story short; when to the dr. They didn't know what to tell me because I'll my blood work came back normal. Found this RU-vid channel, stopped painting my nails and I'm growing my nails out. But I do know it was my nailpolish. So far, my nails are growing out and healing normally without pain. I will never use ESSIE nailpolish again.

I’ve had this same issue, especially after wearing gel polish for several years. After removing gel and waiting patiently for several months my nails were finally in good shape again. Strong and attached properly. I have been polish free for a couple years now. I applied Dazzle Dry for 1 week(sadly it peeled off for me after 6-7 days). Done by a professional at the Waldorf in Chicago. I was hoping it would last long enough for our trip to NYC. As it didn’t, I applied gel manicure. Stupidly I picked it off after we returned home. And guess what my nails separated from the nail beds prematurely again. Will I ever be able to wear polish again without this happening? Should I stick to DD and only wear for short periods with long breaks in between? What other preventative measures should I take?
@TheSalonLife
@TheSalonLife 2 года назад
Sounds like you might have some allergy to some ingredients in gel polish. I would definitely stop using it. Dazzle Dry should not peel like this. I never had it peel unless the base coat wasn't warmed up properly. Do you have the same reaction (separation) when wearing DD?

I’m going to add my uneducated urging to clip or file the nails that have onycholysis as short as you can. I may be uneducated as I’m not a nail tech or medical person. However, I have a lot of personal experience with onycholysis. Nitrile gloves started giving me bacterial infections. As soon as I figured what was causing them, I stopped. The infections went away but I got onycholysis on them. On one of them, i got a second bacterial infection under the nail because I didn’t want to trim the lifted part off. I pretty much lost the whole center of the nail from Proximal Nail Fold to tip. Puss came out, eww. The puss under it effected the new nail growth under the skin. This was September 2021 and I am still regrowing the nail. I have a thumb nail that I think was damaged by acrylics. (not because of a bad nail tech but because my skin and nails just started not liking the product but I didn’t want to stop wearing them. Eventually, I didn’t have a choice. *Sad face*) This thumb nail has had permanent onycholysis on the tip for about 10 years and any time I bang the thumb nail, it can lift all the way back to the PNF (Proximal Nail fold). I have learned that for me, the nail will not grow back attached unless I trim the lifted part off and I don’t polish it. When I say I trimmed it all off, I mean every part I could, no matter how far down it went and how ugly. I only put oil and lotion on the lifted nail. When you get your nail wet, it kind of helps to use a hair dryer on cool to dry under the nail. If you don’t or can’t clip all the lifted part off, you can get moisture under the nail which can lead to fungus. The fear of fungus is a huge motivator to me to clip off the lifted part. Fungus can be hard and impossible to get rid of, even with prescriptions and a doctors help. Anna and MSL, I love these videos!! I share them to various groups. Anna, “keep being the cuticle police”. We all need the education and not everyone will watch all your videos. If no one uses proper terminology, people won’t learn. I always use proper terminology in regards to the PNF and given any chance at all, will explain the difference in cuticle and PFN on FB. I do also put links to some of your videos that educate. Thank for for everything you and MSL do!!

Is it over filed or over buffed? When I hear filed, I think of the tips of the nails being shaped or shortened...
@TheSalonLife

Hi Lana! Using nail file or nail buffer on the surface is damaging either way. Over filed is when person uses the file to remove the gel and files into the nail plate. Over buffed is when the surface was damaged with a buffer.

I have the same problem every time I use nail polish or any nail product that is not at least 8-free or 10-free. On top of having the nail plate separated, there is kind of clear-yellowish liquid in that area and if I push the nail plate, it comes off. Also, the itching is crazy because it is only under the nail and let's be serious, you cannot scratch.
@TheSalonLife
@TheSalonLife 2 года назад
Hi LG Cristea. Sounds like you are allergic to an ingredient in a nail polish. The 10-free and 8 free is not really the thing. I would try to figure out what you are allergic to and avoid that ingredient. Companies make now 20-free nail polishes but that's only marketing term which doesn't tell you much about safety of the product. You never know what they replace the "bad" chemicals with. Very often with new, less studied ingredients. Here is a great article about it www.nailpro.com/news/industry-news/article/21533654/5-deceptive-or-misleading-marketing-claims-nontoxic-xxxfree-organic-natural-and-chemicalfree

I, too, have separation from the mail bed every time I use nail polish, even the organic or so-called breathable, gentle ones. The only shiny products I have tolerated are discontinued: Sally Hansen Natural Shine and Neutrogena Nail Enhancer. Thank you for addressing this subject!

Hi Anna ❤ Your viewer wrote that she has some Plexigel leftovers on her nails. It remainded me of some issue I'm concerned about. Is it true that all builder gels like Plexigel, Cuccio builder, Gelish Structure are more allergenic by default? That their composition requires some specific substances or higher (more dangerous) concentration of other components to reach their properties, consistency etc. I mean is it possible to produce hypoallergenic builder gel? Or is it impossible because ingredients have to be more harsh than in a gel polish (especially comparing to hypoallergenic gel polish like CND Shellac). Is CND Plexigel as gentle as Shellac? (without considering removal process).

Hi Sylwia! I will reply under your questions: 1)Your viewer wrote that she has some Plexigel leftovers on her nails. It remainded me of some issue I'm concerned about. Is it true that all builder gels like Plexigel, Cuccio builder, Gelish Structure are more allergenic by default? --- No, they are not. Clear gels usually are "easier" to cure because they have less pigments (obstructing the cure) Also leaving tiny bits on the nails should be OK 2) That their composition requires some specific substances or higher (more dangerous) concentration of other components to reach their properties, consistency etc. ----- The thing is it's not like there are "safer products" really. The most important thing is safe application and understanding HOW to apply the product safely. 3) I mean is it possible to produce hypoallergenic builder gel? ---- Yes, of course. CND Brisa is hypoallergenic and ICONIQ gels are hypoallergenic but you can get allergic to even hypoallergenic gel if you are not using it properly. That's why I keep saying these gels should ONLY be used by trained professionals. 4) Or is it impossible because ingredients have to be more harsh than in a gel polish (especially comparing to hypoallergenic gel polish like CND Shellac) ----- Possible :) 5) Is CND Plexigel as gentle as Shellac? (without considering removal process). --- Plexigel is an excellent quality product if used correctly and chosen for the right reason (for example shape correction, adding length, NOT "because I'm rough on my nails" or "because my nails are paper thin" Hope this helps :)

@@TheSalonLife Yes, you helped a lot and as always you added valuable knowledge! I just thought that builder gels in the bottles have to contain more allergenic acrylates than a gel polish and that there is no possibility to produce gentle builder gel (that really works) whithout sighnificant amount of HEMA, HEA etc.
@TheSalonLife

It just happens that some builder in a bottles were very allergenic and it turns out they were made in China but that’s not the case with CND Plexigel or even LE JimmyGel. That’s another great product made by a very responsible company owned by a chemist

First you need to establish why this is happening. Depending why this is happening it's usually helpful to cut the separated part to keep it dry. It happened because of trauma. 6 years ago I had acrylic put on my nails and they were too long so I kept getting it caught and lifting it off the nail bed. I have never been able to heal it - this could be because of my job, and I really like having my nails done. It’s mainly to hide it, but I only do gel

Hi There! From what you are describing, it sounds like horizontal nail ridges. Personally, I have them on my fingers and toes. Both horizontal and vertical ridges. As I have gotten older they seem to become more pronounced. If they really bother you, there are ridge fillers you can use (like Dazzle Dry's transform for example bit.ly/3au6l1M ) Ridge fillers help make the ridges less pronounced by filling in the divots. Besides that, you can embrace the ridge (that's my motto at least). Hope that helps! MSL

I’ve been dealing with this on both my thumbs, specifically on the outer sidewalls. I do the Gel-x nails and (please don’t hurt me) every so often I will just pop them off. I don’t do that anymore since I saw my nails separating from the nail bed, but doing nails and having nice nails is part of my livelihood. Do you have any recommendations for that? Can I use press on nails with nail glue or tabs when I am working or for an event? I’d prefer to have the builder gel adhesive but not if it’s causing this damage. Please help. 😢

I have kidney failure and my nails have started to detach from the nail plate. The worst one showed signs of the beginning of infection, so I cut it out. I put antibiotic ointment on it and bandaged it. I t grew a few mm than stopped growing. I waited a few weeks and noticed that it was lifting again, so I cut again. It grew 1 mm and stopped. That is wear I am not with it. I did look up why my nails are not growing and it is indeed my health that is doing this. I ditched the bandage and am living with a very short nail and 9 normal looking nails. I am going to have to eventually cut two of them, but I am waiting because they are not near as bad as the first and no sign of infection and I just didn't want to have more than one bad nail at a time. I guess I'm thinking about what people would think of me with multiple bandages on my fingers but, anyone can get one injured finger. I am beginning to think my nail will never grow again. In addition to this injury I have very deep valley like ridges. I think this is from my nails going dormant as it tries to keep the rest of my body going. I have two very deep ones on on thumb that I have filled with nail glue. I don't know what else to do. You may think I am vain and that does have something to do with it, but I am mostly afraid that if someone sees I'm weak they will abuse me. I suffer from PTS from childhood and have all the types of anxiety.

If all these problems arise from artificial nails appliance, why in Gods name does anyone do it? And why is it allowed???? There are no safe products, all chemicals. There is no correct training, its all about money. Only beauty counts????
@TheSalonLife
@TheSalonLife 2 года назад
Hi Ria! Thank you for your comment and your questions! This is a very complicated topic. I see both sides of the situation. Safe product totally exist on the market. Good training does exist too. The problem is... the biggest problem is that people get their nails done for the wrong reasons. Almost every single person in my salon expected not to do any maintenance, pay very little, they don't care for their nails because somehow they thought that the care then is my responsibility. Also usually people get their nails done because they are "hard on their nails". That's the worst idea ever. Once something is bonded to the natural nail, that nail requires MORE care and not less. Like when your hair is extended the hair needs more special care not less. Being rough with the nails calls for a stronger bond. You give people 50% stronger bond and they will abuse their nails 100% more. Vicious circle. You end up with lots of damage. This is partly why I stopped doing enhancements. The amount of times people would pick off the product, cause whole bunch of damage and literally laugh that "Anna will fix that" No respect for the health of their nails and for my work. Another issue is "client is always right attitude" Nail Professionals are not very professional because the industry and society shaped them to do what client wants. They can't say no because they are afraid of losing a client or being yelled at. Many nail techs care and it's not all about money but there are also many many poorly educated service providers who don't care. The industry bar is set very low. It's sad.

@@TheSalonLifeI am SO guilty of exactly what you’re saying and it’s certainly as complicated as you’re saying too. The entire reason I turned to Gel was because I’d had children and as they grew up and got busier I stopped focusing on caring for my nails like I did before, so my natural nails were in dire need of care and attention. But instead, running around with my kids busy schedules, I was seeking easy, immediate results and turned to gel. And once my “nails” looked great, I didn’t do much of any nail care at all. Which is extra terrible because like you say, when you apply these products, you HAVE TO do MORE maintenance, not less. It was a vicious cycle I trapped myself into. But I couldn’t ignore it anymore when I developed the gel allergy. But my nails are healed again, and I’ve come to that place of acceptance that there are no easy ways out. Rarely in life are the easy thing and the right thing, the same thing. I know that in my head but I wasn’t applying that core belief to this area of my life like I do most other areas of my life. Had I just set my focus and concentration on dedicating time for self care and really nurturing my naturally strong nails, I would have never gone thru what I did. Sometimes you just gotta learn some life lessons the hard way. I’ve definitely learned mine.
