If you read the bottom line of what Mr Wingard said, NOTHING has changed. People still stay at a job when it is challenging and pleasant to be at work. Employers still want to keep good workers and dust the bad ones. Work ethic will always be work ethic, and those who are just coming to work(noun) will not last. Those who come to work(verb) will always excel.
"They want to understand coming to work is actually a great place to be." I won't count on every workplace being great, but I will hold it against a them if they don't take steps to make the place at least tolerable. Right now, I have a coworker who is utterly cheerless, and any feedback I get is inevitably going to be negative, because that's the only time we ever get feedback. Put waking up with a headache before the sun rises even in the month of June, and I'm on the verge of quitting.
As far as a companies “work” space and the culture, not only gen Y but X as well are starting to value our health and family time. We are looking for this in companies! I would rather have more vacation and work place variety and less strict structure to work and thrive. I want to do an amazing job and grow and learn but stifling tight collars and uncomfortable work shoes stifle our creativity. I would even give up dollars for a better work environment . 9-5 is a thing of the past with many jobs. I produce and I want to improve daily. I push myself. I am a good employee. Just treat me like a human being and not a product. Treat me like an individual. Humane compassion.
Goldman might be a good place for millennials as they can handle the slack but Gen X there is no slack. They go to work to work. Millennials think they are at work to chat. Work is not an extension of school and takes people like me to point it out. I do not foster a Google type environment. There is a shared lunch space and that is it. I found they do not want to work. The broader strategy is for senior management and they are a long way from that. I had one who said he was going to design an app and make millions so off you f**k I said. From a mutual friend I hear he is still working at a bar.
