I am not a strong player nor an expert, but his theory of imbalances helped me a lot. I have published a book illustrating 100 stalemate patterns and one of the things I noticed a person can be up 27+ points in material advantage... but suppose out of hubris he makes the wrong move (ie not checking at the endgame) it may easily result in stalemate despite the person being down so many points.

I have a very limited experience with books outlining chess strategy having only used strategic chess by dvoretsky, thinking inside the box by agaard and recently the grandmaster series by gulko. As a 2260 player would such a book be recommended to purchase or would it perhaps be too simple. I lack a coach currently and rely on books so I am trying to be very targeted with my purchases given a difficult financial status.
@ChessBaseIndiachannel
@ChessBaseIndiachannel 5 лет назад
Dear Isaiah, with a rating of 2260 this book may or may not be useful. But if you think you want to strengthen the base of your positional understanding which helps you with a technique to think in any given position, then we would recommend you to go through the book. Because of your level, you would be able to finish the book quite quickly. but then you would definitely learn something out of it. As they say about books like My System by Nimzowitsch, every player understands that book at his or her own level. We think the same is with the Reassess your chess!

I am curious to hear your views on the book 'Move First Think Later'. It takes a completely opposite view to Silman viz. you can't assess a position without calculating moves. The author would say that no one in history would ever come up with b6 in 7:00 by looking at 'imbalances'.
@KeepChessSimple
@KeepChessSimple 4 года назад
Silman never said one should never calculate. He only said that before calculation it is wise to make a general strategic assessment of a position. This can give you new ideas/moves to calculate. But ofcourse you should always calculate. Silman his method isn't very different from other manuals who use steinitz his elements. But In think it is pretty obvious to most chess players you should always look at direct threaths and tactics next to strategic imbalances.

17:02 I don't see what analysis of imbalances lead you to that bishop move. You said what you DON'T want to do (close the center) and explained why (you have the bishop pair, so game needs to be open), but then you suddenly switched to the bishop move without explaining how it related to imbalances.
@hasmituchil5214
@hasmituchil5214 4 года назад
Pushing d5 closes the position hence the idea was dropped. We tried to do dxe5 and followed the line but somehow didnt end up with enough of an advantage. We notice that if we can prevent the f Knight from taking, the exchange will be favourable -- And we can prevent the Knight capture by pinning first and then continuing with the calculations which gives us a nice position. Imbalances here were used to come to the right move but it is for sure not the only thing that will guide you through filtering the candidate moves.
@angel_machariel
@angel_machariel 4 года назад
@@hasmituchil5214 Fair enough that he concluded that he shouldn't close diagonals as he had the bishop pair. But he should have stressed that the next imbalance was the potential availability of a strong outpost square, if only he could get rid of the Nf6 knight. Hence Bg5, to get rid of that knight, to have a secure outpost.

@Bernas909
@Bernas909 5 лет назад
The example starting at 8 minutes is not really a good one: using Silman's method we can conclude that Black should avoid opening up the position due to White's bishop pair and since his pawn structure is worse we shouldn't help him undouble his pawns, so why is b5 such a good move here? I guess you can claim that we have gained control of the c-file (one of the imbalances), that White's undoubled pawns haven't become much better due to the backward pawn on c3 and perhaps that we have gained the initiative? Somehow, I don't see how one goes from analysing the imbalances to playing b5 in this particular position (unlike in the first example of bishop versus knight which is a very instructive one, surely).
@ChessBaseIndiachannel
@ChessBaseIndiachannel 5 лет назад
That example had a deep impact on the author because the move ...b5 was never thought by him. Yes, it's true that the imbalances don't directly point out towards that move, but the imbalances do point towards the fact that you shouldn't be playing on the kingside nor should you be opening up the centre with ...d5 and hence playing on the queenside remains the only option, after which you could think of ...b5.

@TakesTwoToTango 4 года назад
Hi! I see nobody has really answered this yet. I believe this book is a bit too difficult for 1100. You see "How To Reassess" teaches you A LOT about positional play, but nothing about tactical play. Tactical play is the most important for lower rated players. "How To Reassess" is quite a complicated book. Now, Jeremy Silman has written a book specifically for lower rated players. It has the same ideas as "How To Reassess", but it's a bit shorter and a bit simpler for us mere mortals. It is called "The Amateur's Mind". I would highly recommend this book!

Hi thanks for this video I'm intrigued by the book and know Silman from other books. You're undoubtedly a better player than me but the idea in your game at 17 mins of opening up the game to accommodate your bishops seems illogical if you then immediately exchange one of your bishops. At 17.00 it seems you have found a tactical advantage in Bg5 and anyway you exchange your B so how could you then take advantage of open game with your B pair which you no longer have the pair. Again at 20.00 you plan to open the position to use the B pair then again you chose to exchange your B immediately and are left with a B each. In that case you destroyed his pawn structure rather than opening the position for your Bs ............. you dont have the B pair anymore in either game as you exchanged one. Sincerely trying to understand chess better and would love someone to explain why I am not making sense.
@gp2776
@gp2776 3 года назад
Hello, It's been 8 months now so maybe you will not see this comment or maybe you already understood but I'd like to answer to you: At 17:00, the position is closed and you have two bishops. You don't only have the possibility to open up the position for your bishops but you also have the possibility to trade one of your bishop (which are more often than not useless in closed positions). You said in your comment "it seems you have found a tactical advantage in Bg5" but in fact this is a case where tactics serves strategy because once you played Bg5, you will have the possibility to lose your bishops pair advantage for another advantage (bad pawn structure for your opponent, unsafe king on g8 and a strong knight on d5 which has the possibility to jump on f6 - this strategy to give up an advantage for another is discussed in the book). Because of those new advantages, the imbalances in the positions tell you that you have to attack the opponent's king now but for that, you need to active all of your pieces because your strong knight on d5 cannot mate the king himself. That's why he played f4 because this move allows him to open his bishop, queen and rook! Now, it's four pieces which are ready to jump on the opponent's king and it's well known than in general (only 3 pieces are needed to checkmate an opponent's king in an attack!) If you want to improve your chess, I really recommend you to read this book by Silman and then to buy his "How to reassess Workbook"! Have a nice day :D
