Yes and no, I've actually had college professors who were quite good at their jobs and did as he's complaining about- perhaps wisely on both mens' parts. The detail involved in this is that the student who knows where to hunt for the data: he's independent- that's a justified main goal of historical education that's even remotely competent; it is kind of a balancing act between sufficient and perfect regarding the mastery of a topic: take a soldier in world history (any era), if he's profoundly proficient, but is never able to be sent into combat; he's only a deterrant to his faction's foes, proviso that they even *know* of him. And guess what: that's kind of why statesmen insist in showing off their military exercises: to disuade any invasion; a *show of force* to prevent the need for use of *actual* force that may be truly destructive- you do want the real deal, but sometimes mere fear of mutal destruction is more than enough to accomplish your goal of stopping an invasion and allows you to build up your country. In this way: it is the grasp of the topic that matters, but also the *increase* of the grasp of the topic. Take college history classes for example: you buy the course material, proviso that you do your part, the school has a right, nay, a *duty* to evaluate your satisfaction of the learning of the material you yourself hired them to instruct you in- so of *course* any tradesman will insist that you be able to provide them with feedback. A *huge* part of education, however, is both character impartation, at least *true* education, and teaching the student not *what* happened, but how to find *out* what happened, and when- that's skill impartation, much more important than mere data delivery to the customer/student.

The goals of the Education System should be to produce independent, free thinking, productive members of society with critical thinking, analytical thinking, deductive reasoning and problem solving skills.

The crazy issue of wokeism, if you go to any university and ask woke students, hell bent on social justice, are they willing to give some of their GPA to students who have a much lower GPA in the name of social justice, they all say they worked to hard to get where they're at. So no! The hypocrisy of studity.

May be a strong opinion, but it's honest: 1- There is not a growth period in America that is not based on knowing how to source valuable individuals from elsewhere and promoting their integration in American society. Based on his own logic, the US shouldn't be using taxpayers' money to bring Einstein in (among many others). So it's easy to to promote these ideas if you put aside the weigh that this modus operandi is to national security and to maintenance of the leading edge by the US. Besides, it's himself who talks about how deteriorating social isolation is to a nation. 2- The US makes it perfectly possible for most students to choose how hard and rich their own educational path will be until the end of High School. If a student is brilliant AND willing, they will be able to sign up for advanced calculus at an early age, will learn it properly and their teachers can orient/recommend them so they can be effective to society - and this is what makes a big difference from a brilliant child in the US as compared to most other countries in the world. The problem is that a lot of effort and investment is clearly put by american companies/agents to show you how much college is a waste of time. Then, indeed - having companies/people telling you it's useless to follow that formal educational path while simultaneously spending public resources to encourage more americans to do the opposite - that would really waste a lot of resources, reduce social cohesion, raise inequality and increase the social polarization.

Well, he's spot on right about students needing objective standards for evaluation, but from teachers who have done as he's criticizing, what they said they really were pushing for is *character* ie: industriousness about the course material. The premise is that if you know *where* to look things up, you can *self-educate*, accurately, and that's a major goal of education; this's not "wokeism" nor any kind of "PC", as those're garbage, but evaluation based on what's feasibly available.

@@thomassowellreacts First of all, yeah, you can: you evaluate it based on its connection to absolute reality; take teaching critical thinking skills, a vital and seemingly increasingly lost skill set in this Republic we have: how united to what *actually* happened one's grasp is is what is the measure of grasp of the topic material. Also, you can have students come in who are going for a "gut course" in college- but the skill to self-educate is a vital one. Way more than coming into class knowing almost all of what happened. Today, you and I could easily get almost all of the details of the late cold war in a history program spot on right- we observed them happen in our own real life as men- but that'd mean almost nothing of the learning quality. These educators (here I'm referring to the real ones) are also merchants; and so they have to know the skills- that being discerned from the satisfaction of the customers; take yourself, Sir, you (if you are him), you'd know that given the amount of learning material in a course; you only are really able to cover a smidgen of the historical data in a history course in college, and how much your students come *into* it with, including via voluntary studying, is a huge difference. Unbelievable in their comprehension of the data. But one detail you yourself, if you *are* Mr. Sowell, Sir, have addressed that's way more important than mastery of the material is character development.
