How Stats Work - Competitive Pokemon Explained Part 1

Want to learn how to battle competitively in Pokemon Sword and Shield? We'll teach you how--starting with Pokemon's stats.
Even if you've played every Pokemon game, there's a good chance you've never played it competitively. That's because competitive Pokemon has a high barrier to entry, and there's a lot you need to know just to start battling. That said, competitive battling is exciting and incredibly rewarding--it's worth it, and Sword and Shield are a great place to get started.
In the video above, we break down that barrier to entry so you can actually enjoy battling. Part 1 of this mini-series is all about how Pokemon's stats work: species stats, IVs, natures, and the basics of EVs. What do all those words and acronyms mean? This video explains all of them with plenty of charts to make it a lot less intimidating.
In GameSpot's Pokemon Sword and Shield review, Kallie Plagge wrote, "In collecting, battling, and exploring, Sword and Shield cut out the bloat and focus on what makes these pillars of the Pokemon games so captivating in the first place. You're not held back by overly complicated back-end systems or hoops to jump through; from the outset, you can start wandering the Galar region, seeing its new Pokemon, and trying out its new battle strategies with very little in your way. This leaves you free to enjoy what Pokemon is all about, and that makes for an incredibly strong showing for the series' proper debut on Switch."

Nice video! It's good to tell people more about competitive pokémon, most people don't know that it even exists.

Not to mention the other factor being that GF (and TPCi) is SO BAD at teaching players their mechanics in the single player

When listing the different stat names at 1:40, when Kallie gets to "Speed," the chalk sound being played at the same time she speaks makes it sound like she's saying "Feet". Now I want a competitive format where the size of a Pokemon's feet affects their viability.

This was a great video! simple yet informative and digestible. Keep this up, I really hope it will gain good traction. More people in the non-Pokemon community need to learn about this stuff, and it's quite hard (but rewarding) to get into.

You can get berries to lower unwanted EVs now. Can change the IVs for bottle caps. And you can change the effects of your nature with mints.

How does it work when it lowers your level to 50? Does it keep the stats or half them or something (so like if you don’t have much hp will it be even less?)? And how much do defense and hp matter if it’s on an attacker.

how does the stats work with say ranked battles in sword. say I train my pokemon to level 100. but in ranked battles all pokemon are level 50 do they just take whatever your stats are for you level 100 pokemon and cut them in half and that's its level 50 stats or how does that work

I am not sure what this hyper training thing is but IV's can't be changed. You just gotta breed or hope to get a good IV mon.

Hi very helpful video btw. Attacking first is a very big advantage in Pokemon battles just wanna ask say I have two Pokemons, Same nature, Same Evs, No priority moves. The 1st pokemon has HP31 Atk29 Def31 SpAtk31 SpDef31 Spd31 The 2nd pokemon has HP31 Atk31 Def29 SpAtk31 SpDef31 Spd31 Who Attacks first?

So IVs are based on nature, but how do EVs work? I still don't get it? Like how does training it differently alter the stats?
@symphomaniac

The more pokemon you defeat of a certain EV, the higher that Stat goes up on your pokemon.

Can someone explain why breeding is so essential, when we can manipulate IVs (through bottle caps), manipulate Nauture (though mints) and manipulate EVs (through berries)- am I missing something?? Seems breeding is completely irrelevant..
@Friendly_Neigborhood_Astolfo
@Friendly_Neigborhood_Astolfo 2 года назад
To encourage deeper customisation. Most obvious being Egg moves. Some pokemom only learn specific moves via breeding so it is wise to start there. Plus IMO since you may need egg moves anyways it is better to go all the way and get the 5 IVs you want than grind to lv 100. Also, There are some instances where you want one stats IVs to be at a specific value because of certain types of speed control and even due to many moves that deal damage based on different factors will do less because of that stat being at its set base. Not only that, but bottle caps only work on pokemon at level 100 and on top of that, only cap that pokemons ivs to its max. Here are a few examples where If your team revolves around trick room, you would want your pokemons speed IV to be at 0 and most of the time have their nature be hindering in speed since trick room makes slower pokemon go first -Foul play deals damage to the opponent based on how high their attack stat is compared to the user (and stat buffs stack with it) So that is why breeding is vital
@user-nh6yf5xm9y

so what happens when a pokemon with an attack stat of 60 uses a move that has, say 40 damage?

So the base stat of a Pokemon is the average??? My Pokemons stats are different from the base stats! Please reply
@NotGord
@NotGord Год назад
No. Base stat just means something along the lines of how it progresses. It has nothing to do with its actual stats. But it scales in comparison. Except Hp which is always higher.

3:00 there are 12 nature's that are worth using the ones that deminish defense should be avoided 99% for the time. The neutral nature's are ok sometimes. Useful nature's: Atk: Adamite Brave Special atk: Modest Quite Speed: Jolly Timid Def: Bold Impish Relaxed Special def: Calm Careful Sassy

I mean I didnt know nothing about how special training works. I started on diamond and pearl. However, I didn't know jack about the competitive side. I thought all you do is raise and battle your pokemon to make them stronger. Breeding is something I never do in a pokemon game unless I need to get a female version of that pokemon. So much shit just to learn that never appeal to me but there's pokemon that I've trained without this extra stuff that can compete with "competitive pokemon"
@aniimako

@@Herozonex200 Yeah same, I played Pokémon (DPP too) but never felt the need to understand all of this because the game was still fun and somewhat easy with just leveling and knowing basic type advantage. really interesting to finally learn more about all of this though
@srntnjl523

Not all people who play pokemon bother knowing about them though, because it's quite complicated at first, or they simply just don't care about the competitive battling side. I've been playing the core games since Red and Green/Blue, but I only delved on those concepts on Gen 5 when I tried competitive battling for a short while. Didn't quite like how much IVs and natures matter in min-maxxing stats, because personal preferences (the EV training concept is a great one though). I still prefer playing the game by training my 'mons to unlock their strengths regardless of whatever their nature or IVs/genes are, and not make a ton of 'mons to leave in the pc because their stats aren't optimal or whatever (imo it kinda contradicts the bond/friendship aspect of pokemon training)... pretty much like the anime's (especially Ash's) interpretation/approah of pokemon battling and training
