For real Phi, I think this video has single-handedly helped me more than just about any I've seen so far for Tekken 8. I went in with this mindset for a bunch of games after watching this and felt like I had way more control over the fight than I have had up to this point. I got to orange ranks and was feeling a little stuck on what to work on to progress and I think this opened up a path forward for my Asuka gameplay.

Wow, this is extremely insightful. I tend to get frustrated with flowchart string offense and can never figure out when to press, block, or duck. Your advice to "want him to have to go low to kill me" is amazing. It really narrows down the scope for me for defense. And it's really helpful to hear what you're thinking at all times. Noticing his patterns, things you could improve on. These are things I should be thinking in my games instead of autopiloting sometimes. Hope you do more of these. Thanks!

One of the things I always think about when playing someone that may be outclassing me in the moment is from the bill belecheick school of thought His idea was going into a football game defensively he was going to take away the thing you do best. If you beat him another way he would shake your hand. That’s my train of thought. If I am losing I look at the thing that is the most vibrant and is taxing on me the most and I make it my life’s mission in that moment to take that away from my opponent and make them have to find another route to win. I’ve done that in sets in tournaments too and surprisingly sometimes that’s all they were worth and I advanced. If not it least I can made them adjust and I have to be sharper next time😊

It seems like you’re quite knowledgeable about steve. Would it be possible for you to do an anti steve or how to deal with steve video? I feel like a lot of characters are fairly easier to deal with because you get advice such as side walk a character a certain way to nullify most of their options, or duck/flash duck their key moves, but with steve it’s just “don’t get hit by b+1”. I kinda started late in tekken 7 and most of the advice I’ve read was just “don’t get hit by b+1” and that just feels like someone saying “just don’t eat EWGF” when being asked about how to deal with kazuya. I enjoy watching your content because I get to learn more about the game and actually be entertained at the same time. Keep it up, man.

My biggest takeaway is how you have the discipline to immediately run tests after a match while it's fresh in your mind. It's hard for me not to just que match after match but I still realize it's holding me back from improvement. I hit Red and now I'm trying to figure out what I really want from this game. I hit my goal as a casual player. Every time I think to really put in the work I think of how it took the last four years for me to get where I am playing Tetris. There's literally no way I could even compare my skill to when I'd been playing for six moths even.

Super helpful! Also a question… if you can predict victor’s teleport mixups, can you counter hit launch him out of it? I’m a king main and in one instance I was in the flow of the match defending victor’s flow chart offense, and as he teleported backward and flashed forward I launched him w back 1,2 as he was coming in. Haven’t labbed it to see if that was lucky or a massive window that can be exploited.

Great video as always, it could be interesting to analyze the heat smash of every character or at least those with special properties (such as Jun for example), I main Victor and I find it frustrating trying to use mine vs others. Also I think Victor's heat smash is quite bad, frame 20 and only 38 dmg?

This helped my understanding of why my ss always fail. Now I know why. Thank you for this video.

I started tekken with t8 and wanted to know if it ever seemed impossible to execute things like throw breaks and kbd? I’ve done the drills and know theoretically how to do both but whenever I’m grabbed in a match it’s like deer in the headlights. And that backdash rn is ugly

for the jun stance, I think u can sidestep duck? looked possible but need to lab that. a little more advanced, but not that much.

Looking at the comment section, sometimes i feel like tekken players don't know the difference between aggression and mindless aggression cuz watching this game, he played pretty well, was making adjustments as necessary and it ended close, by no means was he destroyed

Hey Phi Do you utilize neutral guard at all? If you do, or at least know all about it's nuance could you talk about it? What makes it active/not active I'm trying to train myself to not hold guard longer than I need to for tight -14 situations where I can react with jet upper but starting from back on dpad slows me down a little. Perfect example is blocking Raven ff3 while actively moving in the neutral.

I would call myself an intermediate player, and after labing against Paul for a while trying to see what beats him. I found an option select similar to what you mentioned for Jun. Paul's QCB stance has options that cover everything, qcb+1 is a safe mid check, qcb+2 is a heat engaged mid, qcb+3 is a low with follow-ups, qcb+1+2 is a launcher and qcb+4 is a homing move. There is one option that beats all but one of these and it is, Sidestep Right and immediately duck. This covers every option that Paul has aside from qcb+4 (since it is homing) and taking the hit is much better than guessing low or mid against PAUL. Also, qcb+4 is only good if you manage to land a counter hit, since it deals low damage and doesn't give guaranteed damage afterwards. Even if the Paul delays the follow ups it is entirely in your favor since they all have a fixed angle and don't track. Most Paul go into this stance from WS+1 2, DF+1 or 3 2. if you block any of these moves you can predict the qcb stance and use the option select. This easily eliminates one of Paul great close up stances.

Genuine question Phi DX. While movement is a solid option in the open. What do we do when we've eaten a combo at the wall and were cornered. Opponents mash heat and start their busted pressure and I can't move anywhere. I'm at Tekken king but I feel useless when it comes down to defending endless strings and pressure. It didn't feel like this in t7. Thanks.
