Hey PhiDX, awesome tutorial, thank you very much! Do you switch up characters to warm up with from time to time? If yes, what do you look for in moves? Is it always formulaic like: 1. Small punish 2. Low parry string 3. Duck string 4. Launch punish 5. Mixup or would you recommend looking a bit more towards key moves of a character?
Having chat feed the line at the end was so funny and lowkey heartwarming 😂 At first I was confused and thought it was just some trolls spamming to have their messages seen... but then the pay off came. Awesome stuff from you and your community, Phi! Always a pleasure learning ❤
Watched here and there from T7 but been watching you hella now that im getting into T8. Appreciate all of your content and hoping for bigger things in the future
@phidx I have become a fast fan of yours. I picked up Tekken 8 to play with a good friend and your content has been invaluable. Thanks for the good work.
I would be all for a basic drill for all characters, here it was Law, but I'd like to have this available for all characters. I am a beginner so I don't know which moves goes for which character, having something like this would for sure help a lot of people. Thanks :)
This is amazing. I love guided shit to try and make me better. I've seen a huge increase in skills since i find this channel, and started really committing to getting better.
"Do you believe that my being stronger or faster has anything to do with my muscles in this place? do you think that's air you are breathing now?" :Morpheus 🤣
It's something most musicians learn. It's all about minimizing mistakes and creating consistency. Play it fast and inconsistent and your performance will have lots of repeated holes and you'll waste your time repeating bad inputs without thinking. This is easily how bad habits are created. Play it slow and your mind learns to do every single input correctly. ONLY THEN you can slowly increase speed.
This is probably the most substantive, beneficial Tekken channel. No disrespect to other channels but all I hear mostly from it is whining and complaining.
This has been the case for a while. I started T7 in 2019 and people have said the same thing then. No one can skip the grind if you want to get any bit decent at Tekken.
A lot of them plateau around their peak. You can makeup the gap faster than they can continue push past the pinnacle of the skill ceiling. How you play is way more important than how long you’ve been playing.
I've been doing these sorts of exercises to keep my brain more sharp especially for my age and I'm almost at a point where I just prefer practice mode than online ranked sessions. It may seem repetitive and boring, but believe me it's worth it and will pay off in the long term.
@@monocyte2210 No dispute about that for sure, putting the practice in action is equally as important, agreed (I just don't overindulge in online sets, just a moderate amount unless I need specific matchup exp).
How old are you if you don't mind me asking? I fear my age catching up to me, handicapping me in faster paced competitive games. I constantly feel like I'm on a clock, pressured to get as much out of Tekken while I can
@@doasitellyouu 32 - I would say just continue to invest a bit of time on repetitive recognition/exercise to help keep your mind sharp. For some people, not playing after a certain period of time, you can feel a gradual skill erosion.
I usually can get either my wife, or my roommate or his wife to play me for a couple games before ranked. I haven't told them I'm using them to warmup.
This is an awesome video PhiDX. I already warm up before getting into ranked, but have done so by usually labbing for a bit then doing some super ghost battles. I am definitely going to implement this SK Law drill into my warm ups now. Keep up the good work amigo!
After a 1 hour warmup you are now ready to face law in yellow ranks, I haven’t seen law in a week. how do I stop Bryans and devil Jins their moves are too fast
I'm just pulling upo to tell you thank you so much for presenting this to me and also thank you to speedkicks. I've gone from thinking myself a fraud and carried once i got into fujin getting rocked by everything. now I've made Kishin Nina's and Laws One and done because im low parrying every last one of their reactable lows. still fujin but I have gained so much from this guide and mixed with your whiff punishing drills and throw break drills ive gained an air of confidence in this game despite only playing 1 month. I know its hard to stay positive but i truly appreciate your content and wish you the best
such good content mate! I'm an old school Tekken player with legacy skills from Tekken 2 onwards and all this practice mode stuff is new to me with recordings etc. I started with Tekken in the 8th edition again, so this is very helpful.
10:07 I really love this training but isn’t it only training us for law. How do we the same thing with other characters? Which I don’t even know what to train for. I usually just do punish training for the option menu. lol. Or there there a chart for all characters I can find ?
You know ive been waiting for this vid! Ever since ive seen Lillypichu do these warmups on her streams, I was hoping you'd put out a full vid about it. Did not get disappointed! I love your content, Phi!
PhiDX, i really need your help on this. Is it just a reaction problem, maybe even a controller delay problem (i play wireless on ps5) but sometimes i just dont keep up with frames on Laws b+122. I play on kazuya and all I get when i punish is a blocked dorya. What do I do in this situation? Or is it not me the problem and I should punish with bd12? Anyone who sees this comment I appreciate the answer.
Mkay Im gonna say couple of negative things here not aimed at anyone specifically...First of all, there are A TON of absolutely >> non-professional >bad" videos on YT will outnumber the views of all the Eddy tech/combo videos by 10's of thousands. So, u'll have to forgive me for not lifting my hands in the air with awe and jubilation of "da pros" in the fgc as some of them are pushing supply carts through a mall(that's a DOA community reference, whoever knows, knows :D :D ) P.S I have won the equivalent of approximately 4k eu in fgc tournament prizes in my country(not recently). There is an enormous variety and caliber of players that exist in the deep space between casuals and bo-ho-hooo pros. Damn, I just remembered ppl posting on twitter about getting free t-shirts in SF4 cause they are in a teams with initials roflmaoooo
This GAME is working its way to career mode if it stays this god damn difficult. No tekken previously had this many issues with just wanting to play a god damn match without locking in for what ever year evo event the game want to force you into.... Its just too god damn annoying to physically have to relearn the same goddamn character that have been changes AGAIN! for bAlAncInG PUrpoSEs..... YOU REMOVED AND HYBRIDIZED THE ENITE CAST WITH MOVES THAT AREN'T THERES!!!!
hiya - I'm a newbie, recently got tekken 7 (cos a friend I like a lot plays the game [ I was a bit of a dumb dumb cos I paid full price instead of waiting on a steam sale. I bought the game and this one guy kept rematching me until I was over the 4 hours refund limit for steam ] ) - would you recommend performing the same drills? I've been thinking about whether or not to be taking Tekken super seriously recently also. I've only briefly scanned a few things, but I can see that Tekken can be a very large rabbit hole to dive down into and am currently weighing up how much time I should be spending on Tekken. It seems like to get to the top level - there is a lot of information that must be learned. And that's just the theory before the practical application. Also, I was wondering about what you think about using keyboard over mixbox? isn't it more efficient since the keys are more tightly packed? Am curious about this as I went to spectate a Tekken tournament and not a single player used keyboard. Finally was curious - what do you think about one-trick pony type players? As that is what I tend to do in games (Tracer / Orisa in Ow2, Terran in SC2, Hattori in Brawlhalla etc). I used to be a katarina main, but since I know katarina is not in Tekken 8, I've been learning Asuka. She's a little slower (but I have been getting a little more used to her and even learned an 11 hit combo - I can pull off 10 hits, but often misinput for the 11th hit) and so I've been thinking about switching to XiaoYu, especially due to your recent video on the AOP stance which I unfortunately did not finish yet. Although maybe that too is a bad idea as she will probably be nerfed before I am at the skill level where I can make use of her abilities to their full extent. Regarding Tekken, is it important to know all there is to know about each character and their movesets? Or can a lot of things be simplified down to a generalized pattern? I.e. do certain types of combos / moves almost always give the same amount of - or + frames etc. Sorry btw, I am but a humble noob just getting into the game. There seems to be so much to learn to fully master the game. It seems like a worthwhile endeavour though. I am a little jealous of Toast and Lily for having been given the opportunity to train with you haha as you seem like an incredible teacher and an insanely knowledgeable player. Sorry got a little sidetracked - do I need to know each and every tiny detail about the game to get to one of the higher skill levels? Or are there a lot of generalized rule of thumbs I can use to my advantage to progress rapidly?
Yo, @PhiDX or anyone else -- why are my training dummies not doing the moves I Record for them!? I go into Practice mode, I set Practice Settings - Training Mode to Defense, I Record an action (or even just pick one from the move list), just like you're showing in the video by hitting Select-4 and Law's B122 hold back, say "yes" i want to save that recording, exit the menu, and.... they just stand there. Today, briefly, I got it to work somehow for the first time. But then, as I recorded a second move, my Law dummy went back to standing completely still. Anyone know what I'm doing wrong? I doubt it's a proper glitch, I assume I'm doing something super weird but my googling tells me nothing. I've tried resetting Practice Settings, changing to different characters and stages, trying different moves to be recorded, setting moves from the list instead of recording them, and a few other things. EDIT: OMFG THERE'S A PLAY/STOP FEATURE. The same button combo to record, if you hit that when you're NOT recording, will pause/unpause the opponent's actions. ah geez rick
Defending Lows A Problem: Just out of curiosity (well more than curiosity), what do you think, per frame rate, a person can react? I know Knee said on your channel that 24 frames is the extent to what a person can consistently react. But maybe that’s NOT online? Lots of lows are faster than 24 frames, such as Jin’s down, 2. Defending lows are always a problem for me, especially those low to mid combos (e.g. Azucena).
After a month of of bouncing around Orange ranks I got to Red…. For all of like 20 minutes then just got beat back down to Eliminator 😅. Guess I need to dedicate more time to your drills PhiDX!
after seeing this or Laws are going to be monsters or won't rank and quit... Joking ofc Nice vid. I was looking forward to drill like this one. Thanks, 10 days fighting game player.
Craziest thing I've found out is that once you ptactice routines like this consistently they go from being complicated and "quick" to rudimentary and slow(er). The brain is crazy with reaction timing. Its just like practicing music
I warm up by playing ranked :D For real though, I don't have too much time to play, maybe 30 minutes. I cannot do 20 min warm up. Playing is more important for me.
My dude, nice video. This was harder than i expected, it was good exercise But as a Low player, I not thank you for encouraging people to bully me. We need to practice the the SK Dragunov drill, he deserves it. 🤣
I’ve been playing since tekken tag 2 and I found my ceiling is blue ranks for tekken 8, I just don’t know how to practice properly but this helped a lot thank you! Question do u recommend fighting top players ghosts?
There have been ao many times when i see attack incoming and i want to dodge it with KBD but i always failed.. This always keeps me stuck in Red Rank since Tekken 6😑.. Perhaps i should grind KBD..
Unsure if you'll respond but I do have a particular question. I main King, and the advice I have largely been given is that I shouldn't really worry about trying to master KBD simply because of how terrible King's movement is for the most part. Obviously this video is a lot more general in what is being discussed but with conflicting info I've heard out there even from extremely good King players I wanted to hear how you felt about it.
Not commenting a lot (bad habit, I know), but I needed to send a shoutout for the work you do. Been watching you since T7, it is great to see you blossom on T8! Keep it up, it is amazing.
The reason I am not elite is because I refuse to rely on game glitches to be elite. So im just a casual upper ranked player who has hit a ceiling. The fuzzy blocl cheat glitch and relying on a glitch to move around fast calle crouch dash cancel are things namco should of fixed when it was found. Have pros just blocking high low really fast and blocking 100pct of everything. Then the game becomes a long wif battle to who will be wif punished first.
Is Korean back dash still necessary? I really don't see a point in learning it.. Especially with how good you can normal backdash now. Its not like in a match youre trying to race backwards towards the with 5+ back dashes. With the insane hitbox/range/tracking properties of attacks as well..
I find I'm never looking for throws enough, such that I'm not in the brain-space to throw-break when I get thrown. Would you recommend mixing a throw into this Law drill so that you're also keyed into looking for throws?
I think you should try my method and rate it if it's working or not. Punishment and grab escape I'm always adding any+ frame on block move and after that any grab, string, hop kick, snake edge so after+ frame I'm focused and watching what he will do and react. During grab escape training I'm always adding Extra snake edge or any punishable strings not only grabs because once after that in real match I was only waiting for my opponent to make any grab 😓
This is pretty much what I do as a beginner except I don't do the inputs myself cuz I don't know all my opponents moves. I just use the presets they have. Where can I learn these block/punish drills? Are they posted online somewhere?
I have a question about why Law is a popular choice for practice sessions. Is it because of his movements? Or is it something he does specifically? I'm familiar with Law's moveset, and I know many of his moves are relatively safe. He also has a lot of safe launchers. So, I'm curious if that's why he's often chosen for practice.
Newcomers can start learning a new character of preference by learning all the moves and at least one strong combo in Practice Mode, then defeating CPU Lv1 to Lv8 in VS Mode and after that playing through Arcade Mode from easy to hardest. After defeating the hardest arcade level you are ready to improve your rank online in Rank Mode.
Very interesting video and very helpfull. I am from Madagascar an emerging tekken community so i am so grateful to you for this video. If you could make another video with another character drill, it will be also very helpfull
learned a few things and i thought i was a tekken vet.. kbd korean back dash is crazy to me 😂😂 didn’t realize there was really sidestep blocking and also the “The SK Law Drill” how many other drills are there that pros use??
This is my first tekken and I have plateaued soo freakin hard at purple ranks. I keep going back and forth between the same ranks. I know rank doesnt mean a lot but I feel like everyone is just miles better than me now. I keep getting slapped around like a lil bich 😂. This has also made me think that I may have picked a wrong character lol (I main Kazuya so far). IDK what to do 😢
I really appreciate your drill practice video. And if you can do drills practice not only for Law but all the top 10 usage characters. That will be great! Thank you so much
To me you all are just super humans or something lol. I have essentially been playing tekken since 1 skipping 6 and both tag games and I still can't even block a snake edge on reaction. So all this stuff is just people doing magic! 😅
one of the things that kinda annoys me about Tekken 8 is that it doesnt save your recorded moves the way it does in SF6, if you record something in SF6 you can come back to it the next day and it's all there, you just hop in, hit play and you can start practicing defending stuff. It'd be a really nice feature to have.
These warmups are great practice makes perfect. Although I get really frustrated with T8’s training mode because i spent a lot of time setting up training drills but the game completely removes your recordings if you leave training in any way. I really wished the game would save each recording on each character. Does anyone else annoyed by this as much as me?
I really wish we could record and name "presets" in training. It's a minor issue I guess, but it's really annoying to re-record every single move every time switching between throw breaks and this Law trainer and whatever else you might wanna have on repeat.
It's been years now but I long stopped warming up before games, tekken, call of duty i just wake up and go right into ranked while everyone else i know does a warmup it's just a personal thing but i find it interesting how i don't warm up while everyone else does
hey phidx, im new to tekken (mk player) and i was wondering if you had any tips on what to look at in a match? i feel like in mk i was easily able to react to lows/overheads and was pretty good at fuzzy blocking but in tekken im struggling to react to my opponent's low attacks and even throws bc by the time i see that theyre hitting me, it's already too late. should i be looking at my opponent the whole time with me in my peripheral?
Not trying to disagree here but I know lots off ppl myself included that dislike the idea of spending too much time in p-mode. In the end its different for each individual. I gotta say tho free-frame-data is a huge win for p-mode and I can see myself learning more about frames because of it. Its important to keep the fun above all else especially in a fightinggame so if u have fun winning and training all day by all means do what u need to do!
Tekken king here. Let me sum all this up for yall noobs. Just go to practice with characters you have a hard time with and learn the combo strings and use the punishment training so you don't have to waste your time guessing what's the punishment for the main moves of those characters. Then learn the rest later as you go cause it'll get easier. That's it 😂
Its going to be really funny when in a few years time every Tekken player at the intermediate level just end up being so cracked at the Law matchup and we’ll be citing this very video as the reason for that 😂
