Not even just lost. Legitimately one of the most lopsided trades in NHL history based on how the rest played out.

They got spanked and embarassed with that trade, Lindros was amazing , but glass and hamburger for brain :(

Putting players on pace doesn't mean to much either. If someone plays 1 game and gets 2 points, they are on pace for 164 points... Kinda silly. If you can finish a season and help your team it doesn't matter what imaginary numbers you could've had

Lindros was probably the best player in the league for about 3 years (94'-97') but injuries and lack of support around him on those Flyers teams did him no favors. That 97' team was basically the LOD, Eric Desjardins and people like Coffey and Hawerchuk at the tail end of their careers. If he could've held onto that level of play another few seasons (by which time they were a better team around him) the Flyers might well have won a Cup.

I honestly believe that Sakic had Lacroix in the background during that phone call, keeping quiet shaking or nodding his head to this stuff. The trade had so much of his flavor, he must have advised on it.

I can understand there being that many pieces for Lindros at the time, would have been not much different than trading McDavid or Crosby after they were drafted. For Sakic to get that many pieces for Duchene, an above average player, is pretty remarkable.

Living through this whole trade tree in real time and watching the recap is quite remarkable. I hated the Avs, first because of Roy and then because of Claude Lemieux but much respect to Pierre Lacroix and the Avs front office for bearing more than enough fruit with what they were given and making the most of a bad situation with Lindross.

Introduced to this amazing game by watching Peter Forsberg? Absolutely nothing better my friend. I was "introduced" to hockey by watching a rookie named Darryl Sittler. That wasn't too shabby back then. On a 12 inch rabbit-eared black and white television. In my dad's winterized hockey man-cave. Oh oh. Here come the tears.

My favorite player of all time.

I worked at a huge sports bar in Denver for many years and met LOTS of athletes in my time there, including a bunch of the old Avs players. The only time I was ever star struck was when I got to hang out with Peter and talk hockey over a few drinks. And this was the summer of '96, right after that first cup. Super cool and nice guy!

they were mostly built on their epic run of awfulness which some say was triggered by their 1987 trade of Dale Hunter... and from that trade they got a certain draft pick that became Joe Sakic!

I wasn't really including the existing Nordiques/Avalanche franchise when I said that just what they added that got them to the cup, but you're absolutely right. All that stuff they got from the Lindros trade wouldn't have helped as much had that foundation from their run of awfulness not been there.

Agreed, but Forsberg was better. Ask the defenseman who played in the 90s-bet they say theyd rather defend Lindros. But it's kind of splitting hairs, as Lindros was great,& well deserved HOFer. But without the injuries, he isn't on the short list of All time greats, Forsberg would have been.

Yeah, two Olympic golds, 1994 and 2006. In 1994, he made the game winning goal in the penalty shootout in the final. In 2006, he made an assist on the game winning goal in the final. He also won two world championships, 1992 and 1998.

It’s gotta be a bit bittersweet to watch him win the Cup somewhere else, but I’m a Detroit fan who absolutely despised the Av’s- and I was still happy for Bourque as a hockey fan.

IMO both great players, nearly even to be honest, and both had their careers take a good hit from injuries.

Both amazing players. As a Pens fan...Lindros was a monster like we may never see again. He could do it all...name me another super star that would win MVP awards and would drop the gloves...and beat up McSorley. Never again.

In terms of how much better they were than all of the other teams, absolutely. That's why we should all be grateful for the cap instead of the insanity that is MLB.

On one end, those stacked teams were outstanding. But they could only be so outstanding because there was so much scrap at the bottom of the standings. Racking up points was easier when you played against the Columbus Blue Jackets, the Atlanta Thrashers or the laughing stock that were the financial disaster called Pittsburgh Penguins at some point. Now, we get to see a Cinderella team like the last place Blues somehow grind their way to win a Cup. It also makes a stat like the 16 years without a playoffs win in Toronto even more laughable.

@@estellegrignon Spot on. Well said. I was at some of those Penguins games in the mid-2000s, and they couldn't give tickets away. Announced attendance would be 4,000-something, but the arena definitely looked more than 80% empty. They also had no clue what to do with young talent at the time, which the "Chasing the Dream" documentary of the W-B/S Penguins at that time shows. Mike Yeo was an assistant coach on that team, and wouldn't you know it--they got better when he left, just like those Cinderella Blues. His success tends to be only in short spurts, especially as head coach. Minnesota perpetually underachieved, often struggling to make the playoffs despite so much talent. And I 100% called that resurgence of St. Louis last season if they would just fire him. I was honestly shocked he had such success in the first few months after officially replacing Hitchcock. Not that he's the sole reason, but after getting the Flyers PP back up to league average, they're 23rd of 24 postseason teams on the PP and 16th in GPG.

I would put the 2022 Avs up against that Wings or Avs team. Not guaranteed win but damn competitive.

Maybe I'm wrong about this, but I feel like Forsberg is one if not the most underrated players in the history of the NHL. When he was on top of his game, only a very few select players in the history of the game were on the same level, but he doesn't get enough credit for it, because of his injury shortened season (and maybe some pro canadian bias)

It’s funny, because everyone in 2017 had all the good players the Panthers managed to take in the expansion draft on their mind, which led to them overreacting and making a bunch of trades with the Golden Knights to keep it from happening, which of course ended up working even better for the Knights. Yeah I remember how crushed Hextall was when he was traded - he’d just bought a house and everything, and people in Quebec had fallen in love with his quirky, eccentric character. From a broadcast I don’t remember, with Quebec down by a goal late in the third: PxP: this must be the time the coach is thinking of taking off Hextall for an extra guy. Colour guy: or, you know, just send him up there. I’m glad it all worked out for him going back to Philadelphia.

Ya they were unbelievable on that '94 video game. I wasnt into the NHL much, til they came to Denver. But we always loved playing hockey video games.I remember hearing the news,& telling my brother-"isnt that the team we often used on NHL '94, that is so good?" Sure enough, we spent many days playing that, having no clue we'd soon have an NHL team,& not just any team, but a stupid talented young team, that just needed a couple trades,& a bit of experience.

So cheered to see this post! So here is some irony to add to your sentiment: I was a young kid growing up in COLORADO when I got a Sega Genesis and a handful of games. Among those games? NHL 94! That was my introduction to hockey, which became a lifelong passion. My favorite team quickly became the Quebec Nordiques. Needless to say, when I was reading the sports section of the paper in 95 and it said that an NHL hockey team was moving to Colorado, I absolutely flipped out when I read that my beloved Nordiques were moving to my hometown! (I was heartbroken for the city of Quebec, of course, and god I miss those beautiful Nordiques sweaters and logo) Anyway, I too have a strong nostalgia for that underrated 92-93 Quebec team. I hated that they traded Ron Hextall and Steve Duchesne so quickly, moves that, along with the Sundin trade, were absolutely asinine and idiotic. It worked out in the long run thanks to other moves, but man did they blow it with those three trades!

And he helped us get Rob Blake. No joke, just before the trade deadline in 2001, I had just won a free Av jersey the day before,& 2 Club level tickets to the game. I worked for a mortgage company,& the title company gave me tickets, for some reason. The jersey happened to be Deadmarsh. I already had a Sakic jersey, so I gave it to my wife at the time, who was a pretty big Av fan, but only knew our players. She didn't really know players, on other teams. So here I am, I think it was the 3rd period, I go to take a piss. They have the radio broadcast, piped in through the speakers, at Pepsi Center. I'm listening to the game, taking a pee,& the radio guy announces we just made a trade. Says we got Rob freakin Blake! There had been rumors, but none saying who we might lose. But I didn't even care. As long as we didn't give up Sakic, Forsberg, Roy, Bourque, or Hedjuk basically (& we knew we wouldn't give up any of them), I'd give ya anyone for Blake. Was sad to see Deadmarsh,& Miller go. But are you kidding me? We got Blake,& a promising, talented, young Reinprecht! And didn't lose Drury,&/or Tanguay. I was so happy, I floated back to my seat, to tell my old lady,& the surrounding fans, the great news! But the wife wasn't having it. She loved Deadmarsh. After Drury was her favorite player. And that was the consensus around us. Hardcore NHL fans were ecstatic. But the few casual hockey fans were not. They don't know who Rob Blake is. But they know Deadmarsh,& to a lesser degree, Miller. Knew Adam wasn't only a good player, but great guy. And here''s my wife, with her brand new Deadmarsh jersey, sulking,& drunk-the rest of the night. I just told her "honey, trust me this a great day for us. This Blake guy is a future HOFer. I love Deadmarsh,& Miller, good players both. But they aren't close to HOF,& the cherry on top-Reinprecht, will help us as well!" She wasn't having it, & you'd think it was my fault! As if I knew he'd get traded,& specifically picked his jersey to give her! I tried to tell her, that the Avs just went from Cup favorites, (maybe co favorites with NJ, but the Avs were slight favorites to win it, at the beginning of the season.) to prohibitive favorites. Hosted the All Star game,& had 5 starters. Blake would be #6. Little did we know, Forsberg would get hurt in the 2nd round,& suddenly it wasn't looking so rosey. But alls well that ended well. Sakic, & Roy were amazing. Blake was a fabulous addition. He, Foote, Bourque, Klemm, Devries,& Skoula formed 1 of the best defensive 6, I've seen in 25 years. And Ray got his Cup, Blake,& Reinprecht beat their old team in 7. But Miller,& Deadmarsh helped LA upset Detroit,& give the Avs all they wanted. And my wife soon loved Blake,& got a brand new, spanking Chris Drury jersey, after we won the Cup. I got a new #4 Blake jersey in 2002. And 2 years later, we separated, & got divorced like 6 years later. But now I'm married to a much better match for me,& (although she hates all sports, at least my ex loved the Avs-lol) I have 2 beautiful daughters of 10,& 11. My ex couldn't have kids. And now you know...the rest of the story.
