is it impossible for us to feel sexy, beautiful, cool, and comfortable in our own skin when the beauty industry is working against us? when there's a product for absolutely EVERYTHING we need to fix about our faces and bodies? don't even get me started on AGING?
check out our podcast channel THE MUSTARDS : bit.ly/2BQIp5D
rules for women podcast episode : • Video
in this video i challenge the beauty industry’s way of making us feel less pretty. plus why i consider myself anti anti-aging!
i talk about:
- how to be comfortable in our own skin !
- is the beauty industry dangerous ?
- ridiculous beauty standards !
- do we have to be FIXED ?
- aging = damage !??
- a product for everything !
- makeup, skincare, creams, haircare, rollers, gloves, wax strips - it never ends !
- what is holding us back from feeling pretty ?
- hairy upper lips, big pores, fine lines = imperfections ?
- looking in the mirror vs. staring at the mirror !
- putting each other down with “insult compliments” !
- feeling more sexy with AGE ?
- becoming older = becoming more kickass !
- criticising others’ looks !
- telling david to buy wrinkle cream !?
- do we feel ugly because we ARE ugly ?
- focusing on health !
- how to stop overthinking ?
- stop following negativity = choose media + influencers that make you feel good!

My first year in college, 3 years ago, I took a psychology 101 class and in a lecture, the professor said that as men age they become more attractive and as women age they become less desirable. Being a girl myself, this of course destroyed me, and I've been thinking about it ever since. I cant believe something like that is being TAUGHT to people like its a fact.
@mooncat5681

As if women's only value is they're appearance. When they could be just as invaluable and brimming with ideas as men. But yeah that stuff sticks with you. You have to look your best i.e. it always comes down to looks. And you can't just exist as men can.
@bellycurious

It's a fact that as time goes by we, women, become less desirable. But who says it's important to be desired? Who cares if a unknown guy wants to put his penis in your vagina? 😒😒 Their desire has 0 impact in our value. Be happy, have a good laugh everyday, drink wine/beer, eat chocolate/candies. Death awaits us. Enjoy life.

An aging woman is less able to take the toll of a pregnancy, so both the proginy and the women are healthier, if you only make children while young. As males don't get pregnant, this makes prefect sense.

@amaliab6682 4 года назад
@@bluellamaslearnbeyondthele2456 Thanks for the laugh, enjoy sounding like a simpleton from the 18th century then and being laughed out of rooms by actual adults with an ounce of common sense. Men go bald, develop guts while simultaneously having chicken legs, start growing hair out of their ears and nose and all sorts of nasty shit. Not to mention that the average man already has fairly deep forehead and eye wrinkles by the time he's 35 because men don't even engage in the simplest body and facial hygiene and usually don't even wash their faces on a daily basis, much less moisturize or use sunscreen, god forbid. Trying to get a grown man to wear sunscreen is like trying to get a toddler to wear sunscreen, which is an apt comparison in your case. I've seen wrinkles on men in their early 30s that I've never seen on women in their early 30s. Rest assured that the average man at 40 already looks much older than the average woman at 40. An inconvenient truth is that many men can barely manage to take care of themselves because they spend their whole lives being coddled by their parents and then their wives so they act like manchildren well into adulthood. Men don't look better as they age, it's just that signs of aging are seen as acceptable on them and they don't have every centimetre and pore of their bodies scrutinized endlessly. Men can walk around looking dishevelled and mediocre and nobody cares, women don't have that luxury.

This is exactly why I've started applying less makeup. All this time alone is a great way to start getting used to seeing how my face actually looks like. Do my eyes look great with eyeliner, um yes! But do they look good without? Yes. Do my brows need lots of filling in? Technically no. Its like you say, men don't hear buy that cream or are you feeling ok, you look sick/tired? We accept men as they are and what you see is what you get. Shouldn't we do the same? Accept ourselves and present ourselves confidently in a what you see is what you get kind of manner?

That's exactly why I stopped bothering with makeup. I will much rather be "ugly" 24 hours a day than "pretty" for 8 hours and then feeling "ugly" during the 16 hours when I don't have any makeup on. Same. People are like "Waaah young people are so lucky so beautiful". Like what? Lol I was a mess when I was younger and I look better at 30 than I ever looked at 17 at 22 or at 27, and a lot of my friends are like that. Yet they all act "blind" (esp the women) and torture themselves for inexistent wrinkles, lack of elasticity, lack of youthfulness and refer to themselves as "old". I even feel bad sometimes because I tell them this is ridiculous and even though they don't tell it to me personally, the fact that they complain about this all the time mean that they see me like that too.

Speaking of dark circles - I've always had them, very dark, purple-ish and huge since being a child. And I've always liked them, never thought about them as a flaw. Just imagine how surprised I was when I'd got older and started to get interested in makeup and I realized that every woman puts tons of concealer on their dark circles in order to hide them - which means dark circles are something ugly, so, I suppose, I should feel insecure about mine as well? And it was hard at the begining, i started to put more makeup because my ''Flaws'' were more visible, put at some point a learn to love that things that i was trying to cover at the begining, i felt freaking beautiful showing that. There is nothing necessarily bad in using this time, when majority of people have much more free time, to build new habits. If you are at home 24/7 and you always tried to start waking up at 5.30 to do yoga - now is the time, why not? Wanted to eat more healthy - now is the perfect opportunity to try to incorporate this new habit, cause you are going shopping once a week and can be mindful with what you bring to your kitchen. I see nothing bad in trying to get some positive results from this terrible situation.
@amyoleary9157

@@rekwa3860 Yes that's an awesome way to look at it if you have a well adjusted mindset and others may not have that approach so it is unrealistic in my mind to assume some can switch that off and start doing it just because if the sudden free time. I have done as you suggested only haven't done the yoga I have beaten myself about food and compared myself to the "other folks in their routines and exercising and great approach" only hang on, I've been doing my stuff for decades and their stuff for moments. I've got a lot of dysphoric negative sxxt to take care of and this pressure to do great things during this down time when being surrounded by uncertain anxious stuff is hard! So I have got to accept the imperfections of my COVID 19 workouts and diet as two weeks isolation isn't enough to undo years of trying to do yoga, trying to love my flaws, but hey, we're all works in progresses, perfectly imperfect and i am now facing 41 and feel more hopeful than ever as it has been made so much more apparent that life is too short. @@amyoleary9157 I do understand what you are talking about. We absolutely don't have to feel guilt because of our "not superproductive quarantine time". We are way too obsessed with productivity in general. It is OK to feel anxious, to feel stagnant or lost. The world goes crazy. I am just thinking about "why not to try". For sure all these "learn new language" things can make anyone uncomfortable. If all you can do is to lay down on the couch and watch movies to distract you from your anxiety - go on, that's what you need now to keep you sane. If you feel that you have plenty of energy and nowhere to spend it - then try some new exercises or hobbies. The key is to listen to yourself, not the "coaches". I think the bigger, underlying problem here is how much emphasis we put on beauty as a society. When you're told how beautiful you are, you're likely to think "they're just lying to be nice to me, I'm ugly" so instead of making you feel better about yourself, they often make you feel worse. That is why I don't like telling everyone how beautiful they are; it doesn't solve the bigger problem of beauty feeling more important to us than it actually is. It also annoys me when I see that one of my friends has posted a photo of themselves on Instagram and the commenty are only compliments about that person's beauty along the lines of "you are sooo beautiful 😙😍❤" but I haven't read a single compliment regarding that person's character traits or behaviour yet. I get that it's meant nicely, but it can have bad effects.

I have made the decision to focus on my health instead of beauty some years ago when I realized that even though it looks like the world is only accepting beautiful people, it really doesn't matter that much when it comes to carrier or relationships, or, just generally, in life. I grow tired of trying and there was a time when I felt disgusted when I looked at women who were all "dressed up nicely as a woman should". Also, you are absolutely right about the model of the industry; it is a moneymaker. You need much less product that you are told, and, on the top of that, it generates so much waste in the end; all those containers, perfume bottles (I can't buy them anymore, such a waste, really...), plastic packages... it is terrible. You will get old and, some point, ugly, yes, but I love how you pointed out value as meaning in this topic. It doesn't mean you will be less valuable unless you don't learn to love yourself.

I also started to look at my looks more objectively and realised I can decide if I like how I look. I don't need societies approval. I've also saved so much money. Patricia Villegas there was a study or article ( I can’t remember it a while ago) that said the way a mother talks about herself affects her daughter the most. And that mothers uphold the toxic cycle since the home is where children first learn about gender roles and sexism (mothers still do majority of childcare even with a job like fathers 🤷🏿‍♀️😒). I found it interesting because I only have one physical insecurity and I wasn’t aware of it till both my parents constantly started pointing it out. @@rightwingleftwingchickenwi358 I was going to say the same. Sometimes what parents say are the toughest things to get over. This reminded me when in a random conversation my mom said that a breast augmentation surgery would be the only surgery she would allow me to get. And that's when I realised that my flat chest was a 'real flaw', because, you know, 'my mom said it'.

I am still very young (early 20's) so I am not worried about wrinkles yet, however the only way that I am "worrying" about it, is I don't want sun damage or dryness to be a factor to make my skin look older than it really is. For these reasons, I do care about wearing sunblock generously everyday, before I go out in the sun, adding a moisturiser because my skin is extremely dry, etc. So, in a way, it is anti-aging, but also protective because "damaged" skin can be due to not taking care of it properly 🤔 I don't expect myself to be wrinkle free when I'm 50, of course. I expect the wrinkles, and I will definitely embrace them. My grandma is very beautiful (with her wrinkles) even at 70. But at the same time, I don't want to "look 40", when I am actually 30. I'm not sure if that makes any sense 🤔 Regarding body hair, I don't remove it unless I personally want to feel my soft smooth skin underneath. Lately, I even wear shorts/skirts/dresses with my unshaved legs!
@marteumar8429
@marteumar8429 4 года назад
I was also wearing clothes that show my legs unshaved - before the Covid thing - and it was incredible to see that people in the streets care about it a lot less than what i thought they would and this WHEN they realize it because most of the times don’t even realize (and my body hair is not blonde or anything).. it’s great!

It's heartbreaking to imagine a world full of people walking around, all feeling self-conscious. Thank you for this great video to help people escape the spiral of feeling ugly. "Stop reading and following negativity" is a great and underrated tip. I also love your positive attitude towards aging. Friends of mine who are a few years older than me think that I'm positive about aging because I'm "not that old yet" (i.e. I'm on one side of 30, they're on the other) but in reality it's because I have an attitude very similar to what you described in this video. Thank you for your work!

Thank you! You've put into words what I've felt since I was a teenager. I have never worn makeup, only had it on like twice in my life and one of those was for a costume. I dislike the industry for creating problems and selling us the solution. Have you ever noticed that almost all their ads start with telling you what's wrong with you? "Do you have short lashes? Small lips? Somewhat shiny skin?" as if any of those were a legitimate health issue and not just an aesthetic preference. Now don't get me wrong, I have nothing against women who do wear makeup as a form of self expression. I use clothing and accessories as a form of self expression, and my lack of makeup is self expression too. If you feel empowered and truly like yourself with makeup, I'm happy for you. But so many women I know say things like "oh I can't even think of going outside without makeup on" or "I wear makeup because my skin looks like this and that", and I just think that's a mindset that the industry has forced into their minds and that's making them insecure and sad. I've noticed that the women who list their insecurities when I ask them why they wear makeup are the most prone to lash out at me and accuse me of trying to take it away from them when I voice my opinions. As for myself, I focus on being healthy and eco friendly so I only get the most basic hygiene products and buy things that don't have a plastic packaging (for example solid soap and solid shampoo instead of gel based products).

It's been very liberating to create my own personal standards of beauty in the last few years, and to be honest about what I like and what I don't care about. I stopped removing my body hair because I realized that I love the way body hair looks on other people, so why did I feel like mine was ugly? I stopped wearing makeup unless I felt genuinely inspired to do a look, and not because I felt like I needed makeup to look "presentable." I stopped using skincare that targets "imperfections" like dark spots and started using skincare that meets my skin's actual needs.

About your hair. Normally I’m not one to comment on the way other people look, but now you asked :) The short hair is super cool! And makes you look mature and sleek. I may remember you talking about trinity from the matrix and in my opinion, you would achieve that look with a few layers, so the ends isn’t so thick. But seriously, you rock your hair at every length.

I like designing characters and people watching and there's styles of people I think are beautiful, but maybe other people don't. Imperfections make someone beautiful like kintsugi. And there are a lot of human biological changes that are inevitable and don't fit the standards doesn't mean they should be thrown out. I think aesthetics have rules bound in color theory, composition, and there are some patterns that work together to give different impressions, but none of them are bad, just unclear. And lack of clarity means lack if confidence.

I would also suggest a fourth pointer: Stop aiming a camera at ourselves so much of the time. If we turn the camera toward things outside of ourselves there is beauty everywhere. I know that people have made it their career, but I think it's not healthy to constantly count likes and followers. I don't think that Instagram, RU-vid and the whole notion of influencers (many of whom are complete photoshopped fakes) competing for likes and followers--a very recent phenomenon in historical context--are helpful in this. Internet trolls and malevolent camps of "fans" contribute to the malaise as well. I know it's part of the job, but I would rank the quest for clicks and likes and comments with people-pleasing pathology. Why bother others to make essentially private decisions? Why should anyone ever ask anyone else whether or not to cut their hair this way or that? Why should anyone care who else likes it? I believe it's healthier to know and be at ease in your own mind. It's hair. It grows. It's cut. It grows again. Do as you like whenever you please. If you don't like the result, try something else.

You are so right. Aging is a natural process and I believe it’s important to take care of our bodies so we can age well and healthy but when a woman is so preoccupied in retaining her youth by doing all kind of procedures in my point of view it makes her look little attractive and unnatural. We should love the bodies we are in but that only happens when we nurture ourselves from within, spiritually, emotionally and physically and accept our imperfections

I see that this is an old video but it is timeless. As long as we keep putting forward, such a made up version of ourselves, that’s what people will expect to see as beautiful, and worse, ourselves. I feel the same way. Well, first I struggled but I was so happy to survived that now I'm fine with them. They are telling an important story of my live!! And what about my wrinkles? They are there telling other stories - good and bad ones. Do I hate them sometimes? Yes - but girl, you better don't waste time struggeling with imperfections! This is a video that I’ve needed for a long time, but possibly now more than ever. I’m 20 years old and have struggled with eating and body image issues since I was 11. I went through a spell of being okay with how I looked, but recently it has gotten out of control again. I recently deleted all photos I have of myself, including archiving all my posts from Instagram because I thought I looked so hideous and ugly in comparison to all of the other girls I saw on my feed, influencers, celebrities, even people I knew in real life. It was when that happened that I realised something had to change, and this video has just shone more light on that fact for me. Thank you so, so much Jenny. I’m ready to take my life back and stop hiding away (post-pandemic, of course 😜) ❤️

Great perspective. As a 64 year old woman I am doubly aware of society’s view of ageing. We should celebrate each year because it means we have been given that year and so many others don’t. I think it’s a real shame when so many of the beautiful, older women in the media such as Cher and Jane Fonda have plastic surgery to try and recapture their younger selves. Love your hair as it is.

Hey Jenny. I just wanted to let you know that I felt this so much. As a Latina living in the U.S. , I observed from a very young age the super unrealistic beauty standards for girls. I was constantly surrounded by images of skinny, light-skinned, white women. Me being a young Latina child with tan skin, super curly black hair and eventually a curvier body, I saw these things as flaws that I thought made me ugly and un-loveable. I starved myself, tried to lighten my skin, and considered many times dyeing my hair blonde. The younger me would've done anything to look like you because you, in my eyes, would've been the definition of beauty. I'm trying more and more each day to love myself and accept myself for who I am. I still struggle though, a lot. But I know it will all be worth it in the end. Thank you once again for making a video like this. I know that many women of color struggle to accept themselves in a world that glorifies euro-centric beauty standards. Keep up the great work Jenny!

I bought into it, too, for a long time. And then got mad about how I’ve been manipulated. So much wasted time and effort and heart ache trying to achieve an ideal that marketing created. Boo to that! I find that re-programming my mind and being kinder to myself is a two steps forward, one step back process. But there’s progress! 😊

And although you are right about men not being supposed to care about their looks all that much, they do, of course. And now the industry wants to bring us sexual equality by making young men unhappy with the way they look. I’m all for sexual equality, but that is so wrong.

One thing that bothers me above all about the beauty industry is that the ultimate beauty standard is being the opposite of what you currently are. You are short? You should wear heels and vertical stripes to look taller. You are tall? That's manly, you should try to look shorter. You have curves? You should hide them to look skinnier. You have no curves? You look like a little boy, here is a padded bra and use your clothes to add volume. Your face is round? Wear your hair and makeup in a way that makes your face look more squared. You have a squared face? Wear your hair in waves to make it look rounder. And it goes on and on
