How The Call Of Cthulhu Starter Set Revolutionized TTRPG Intro Products 

Just bought this thing. I was shocked by the quality and value I got for less than 20 bucks.

I ran Call of Cthulhu for my wife & some friends back in 2019 (stupid pandemic, derailing my return to gaming!) and had a blast. I set it here in the Washington D.C. area, which let me dive into local history, find old photos of neighborhoods folks are familiar with, etc. There was a really wild speakeasy that involved a treehouse on the edge of Georgetown. Georgetown wasn't the trendy rich-people place it is now, either. It was largely a working port, with some industry, and a largely African American population. I didn't even get into U Street, which was called "Black Broadway" at the time. I love that Call of Cthulhu has prompted me to do so much research on historic subjects over the years. I've read so much on the 20s, and the decades leading up to it, often with "enriching my games" as the starting reason (though rampant curiosity usually kicks in soon after).

The funny thing is that we had some starter sets in the 90s that were just as good, they just stopped making them for some reason. I got into Dungeons and Dragons after I got the 1994 "AD&D First Quest Set" and they were awesome. They came with pregen characters in full color printcote (like thick, durable paper), maps, miniatures and even a CD (yeah... 90s) with the gameplay example and the actual imagined scenario of said gameplay. It got all of my friends hooked!

As a youth (late 80s, early 90s) playing ttrpgs, CoC was a myth. All my friends talked about it but no one had it nor could find it. So back then any coolness the game had was lost simply because no one had it for me to see. Then I became an adult and CoC is everywhere. I’m in love.

Chaosium have been hitting it out of the park for a while now. The recent RuneQuest starter set is even better, if only because it's more loaded with stuff.

Mine arrived on Wednesday. You really can't beat the price and the artwork and color scheme is right up my alley. Back in the 80's, I had the 1st edition but I couldn't find anyone to play it with, but it was fun to read and create characters 🦑👍

There are a few issues with the stand alone adventure, such as some paths not making complete sense. I have to say though, this is by far the best starter set I’ve ever bought. The value for money and quality of the product are both very high. I now have lots of the 7th edition books and have to say I am very pleased with the quality of Chaosiums products. Great review.

Glowing review! I just picked this up yesterday and wow I am incredibly impressed (I also picked up the newest D&D starter set and uh…. call of cthulhu is on another level). What should I pick up next after running these starter adventures?

I really like these updates but as someone with the previous 7e starter set, do you feel that the 40th edition version having the extra handouts is worth getting?

I want to learn how to play this game and be a keeper. I'll keep an eye on this channel lol Got any other tips for a noob?

in the origina; release the handouts were double sided and could NOT be used. cut one handout and you cut thru another on the ack. Give one and also give another spoiler.

The Alone series is nice, but the solo adventure in D&D’s Red Box had the first Choose your own Adventure style intro that I’m aware of, so I can’t agree this is revolutionary at all. The sanity stuff might be the main mechanic CoC innovated, otherwise, BRP is the same base system most other RPGs use.
