Ever wonder how video games get their sound effects? We go behind the scenes of Halo, one of the world's most popular video games, to find out how the game builds everything from its weapon sound effects to its sci-fi environment.
Creating the sound effects for the latest release, Halo Infinite, required creative Foley and field recording techniques to capture and distort real-world sounds that they can then use out of context in the game.
Halo Infinite's lead sound designer Kyle Fraser and senior sound designers Robbie Elias and Jomo Kangethe break down the techniques used in destinations as far-flung as Tasmania, an airport runway, and a vintage farm machinery heritage site.
They walk us through the sound effects for vehicles, weapons, and destruction in the game, along with the detailed ambiance and environmental sound for the multiplayer maps.
Halo Infinite is available now with Xbox Game Pass.

Imagine being inside the mind of a sound designer. Like "I could make a campfire using twigs and bacon" or "I wonder if I could take my wife screaming at me and slow it wayyy down so it sounds like a titanic ocean monster". Must be one of the most fun jobs you can have.

I did the sound design and some foley for a super weird short film a couple years ago with a friend, and I can confirm it's so fun (and hilarious). We needed to make the sound of a giant caterpillar sticking it's tongue into someone's ear in a giant psychedelic dream/trip sort of situation, we went to the dollar store and bought a bunch of weird little squeeze toys and some shampoo and then had to record the sound of toys sort of like, drowning and snorting in the shampoo and we were crying laughing pretty much the whole time, it was so hard to get a good take hahah. We kept saying "I can't believe this is our actual job".

Despite some of infinite's problems, the sound design is top notch. Its a case of them doing the sound design so well that it isn't usually noticed by the players since it sounds so natural. Halo got me into game development 10 years ago and viewing tag data from Halo CE gave me such an intense in-depth look of proper game development. It taught me there was surface profiles of each material and often 10+ sounds for each sound, per material, which leads down a rabbit hole of what are materials, oh they are textures, controlled by shaders, wrapped onto geometry, that is 3d modeled, that is sometimes rigged, then animated, then programmed by controller inputs. Undoubtedly video games at their core are one the greatest, complex, and fun human achievements, and I really must thank Halo for starting me on my journey. Halo Infinite is so fun!!

Halo 2's making of where they give a tour of that dev area devoted entirely to SFX. when they explained that each of the little pieces of code appearing on the screen were being called upon *live* as the character, enemies, weapons & fragmentation interact with dozens of surfaces - all with accurate, tailor-made results. awesome stuff. you working in game dev atm mate?

I think this is one of the reasons why Halo Infinite took so long to be developed. Rather than splicing some random, free (online) sound effects, the developers put a lot of work into the process of sound design, using unorthodox methods to make the sound effects that they have in mind. This is what I like about these big game franchises: they are involving because they have been thoroughly researched and developed.

Triple A studios that are using sound libraries are absolutely NOT using free sound libraries, they're going to be using very expensive Hollywood sound libraries. These days I would assume most triple A studios have sound design teams that do at least some of their own Foley work, they need things that people will recognize as sounds from their games. These may seem like unorthodox methods, but they really aren't that crazy. It's extremely common for Foley artists to search for sounds that nobody else has ever used before, that means recording things that nobody has ever recorded before. I would be very surprised if this work added a significant amount of time to the development of the game, I would assume it would have to be the fact that they put this level of care into every detail of the game.

I really loved the approach that they sampled weird noises from domestic animals and as an indie developer I felt very much inspired. But can you still shoot indifferently at some aliens realizing their sounds came from some cute little pugs? 😂

Reminds me of the same type of documentary they did for Halo 2. The sound designer led them into her room/studio that was full of a bunch of different items, and she showed a bit of how she came up with the sounds, such as cutting a cantaloupe in half and tapping them against the cutting board to create the Jackal footsteps. That just seems like a really cool job.

7:56 animal sounds have been used in the development of video games audio tracks music and even films for decades like for example in the original black and white 1933 film King Kong the great sound designer Murray Spivack traveled to the selig zoo and used the roars and sounds of lions and tigers in combination with other sounds to create king kong’s iconic 1933 roar which we all know and love.

Credit where credit is due, the sound in infinite is freaking amazing and so stellar. Just how they mention, it does feel like the weapon is grounded in some instance and sci-fi when you know your holding a covenant weapon but still, not all is synthesized and depending on the situation of the player. Enjoyed watching this interview.

But its given me a HUGE appreciation for this kind of work.
