Through the eyes of chief test pilot Mike Carriker, a legendary contemporary pilot who is flight rated in more than 100 airplanes, we will see how a century of aviation trial and error, and some of the seminal airplanes of the 20th century influenced the design of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

I remember watching this as a child almost everyday I was enamoured by the engineering marvel. This video inspired me so much, hopefully I become an engineer and continue to progress the aeronautical industry.

My family flew from Washington DC to Florida on a super Connie and back. Huge airplane when you’re 10. I will always remember the front landing year it was so tall because of the propellers. Also the steps to get in the plane were very very tall. What makes a great airplane PEOPLE !

I‘ve watched this movie a couple of times. One of the first time was as a child when my Dad took me to Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum where it ran in the IMAX theatre. My favorite scene 29:10 always brought tears to my eyes. Now I’ve become an airline pilot myself. Started on the 737-800, now transitioning to the A320, my company will get some 787s over the next couple of months.

Evidently someone forgot perhaps one of the most important airplanes, which is in fact the grandfather of the 787 Dreamliner -- the 367-80 AKA simply the Dash 80 -- the prototype of the 707. Boeing went for broke in the design , if it was not for the Dash 80, the 787 would never even exist.

You should definitely go. The A380 we know is actually a shrunk down -800 version. Airbus originally planned to use the same wing on the larger "original" -900. Being so large, the A380 feels very stable on board. It's incredibly spacious even on economy class. Pick the upper deck if they give you the option to choose seats.

I detest Boeing. After all, they killed more than 300 people with the 737-Max8. But... I must admit... this 787 is something to behold. What must I think of Boeing now? Mixed feelings. I still think their management (from the ex-CEO on down) and software designers should be brought up on charges of negligent homicide. But I know they never will face that responsibility, much less legal charges.

Boeing once was without a great company building some of the best planes its time. The merger with McDonnell Douglas in 1997 brought some new top managers into the company and soon sales revenue was put over quality. Today Airbus has taken over the lead and probably offers the best planes on the market (A220, A320neo, A330neo, A350).

A very long bow to pull, that one. The only similarity between the 787 and the Connie was long range. On the Pacific route, the Connie could do San Francisco to Sydney with three stops, whereas the Boeing stratoclipper took four and in much less comfort. In terms of modern planes, the A350 shits all over the 787.

Sorry guys but the word aircraft is a collective noun so it does not take an “S” when plural. One aircraft ,two aircraft, three aircraft. Just like deer, one deer, two deer etc. This is a common error committed by people that think in their own Latin-based languages like French, Spanish and Portuguese where the plural form takes an S.

Meh, it's more that even 30 years ago, Boeing's research already showed that consumers were moving away from the hub-and-spoke means of transport, where passengers are funnelled into these huge machines, and instead into point-to-point (I think it's called?) flying, where smaller planes are used. Even before the millennium, the 747 was becoming obsolete. Fast. By the time Airbus brought out the A380, they had an amazing innovative machine that no one wanted. And these insanely expensive planes only are bought when airlines know they will be used. It's just a change in the market, and Airbus gambled badly. That's why the A380 is now stopped production already and Airbus is at least 20 billion euros in debt. At least according to wikipedia =P (that A380 article was just like "here's every economic screw-up Airbus has made in the last 40 years"...)
