This is gorgeous!! The trick is to leave 3 or 4 inches of the back panel unpleated so they overlap and make a placket. I add pockets in at that point 😋

I need to start building up my petticoat collection (for historic styles and warmth) I love how this version has the tied waist. Me being new to historical had no idea there was a way to hide the ties so well. I can now have several petticoats that double as the top layer! Probably not the flannel bed-sheet with polar bears on it though...

@@katechaste how did it turn out? And can I reuse the top and bottom hems without it looking too weird? Thinking this would mainly be an around the house or under layer skirt in burgundy flannel from sheets.

This is exactly what I need! I'm trying to lose weight, so I'm scared to make any clothing with expensive fabric that might not fit me in a few months. I was trying to come up with ways to make an adjustable skirt that didn't use elastic, because I love a regular flat waistband. I had actually thought up something similar to this, but only open on one side, and I don't have the knowledge to actually bring it from my brain to a physical object. You made this look so easy (even the pleats!) that I don't even feel intimidated. I can't wait to try this out.

I'm definitely going to be making at least one of these! I love how there are little details of many pieces of historical clothing that are suitable) adjustable for the different stages of women's life---gaining or losing weight, maternity or nursing. So practical, but beautiful at the same time. Thank you for sharing this with us!

I love the skirt and the fabric color! One thing I’ve seen when tying up the ribbons is that the back panel is tied up first, then the front. That way, you won’t get that side pocket overlap from the back panel. Thanks for the video!

Thank you for this video. I made my first attempt of this today. I was perhaps a bit overly ambitious and decided to add pockets. With a bit of fussing I was able to make it work. Thank you for this! I've been sewing "historical for awhile, but had always done a basic gathered drawstring or pleated with skirt hooks. I knew there was another type of waist closing but just ... couldn't .. Then a discovered I needed to take a woolen skirt apart and redo the waist band - what better time to try what I had been avoiding! I was able to take the waist band off, unpick the pleating, and unpick side seams while watching your video. Now I'm off to check what ribbon I have on hand so I can put it all back together, just better fitting! Thank you so much!

@KatherineSewing
@KatherineSewing 2 года назад
Oh no! I'm sorry to hear that 😫 Doing large cartridge pleats might be an option for you to try. It involves using gathering stitches to create pleats, and in that way you can pull up on the gathering threads to create the skirt width you require easily. If you look up cartridge pleating, often they are tiny little pleats, but you can use the same technique to make larger, 18th c pleats ☺️ Hope this helps!

... what if one sewed two or four belt loops onto the front panel? And sewed a buckle onto the back panel bands (extending the waist band to have enough for such a buckle). I know it sounds fussy, but it would hold the front panel in place. Just this morning I sewed myself a belt using a simple band (ironed exactly how you did yours) and attached the ends to a plastic "clip buckle" I had picked up on a whim at the local habadashery. It is very wide. The fabric belt is 1 and a half inches wide. I saw your video on your beautiful hair and you also showed a beige dress you wear with a wide belt. Another idea is to make a casing that is wide enough to slip over the belt. So then the skirt back simply hangs from the belt via this casing... And the buckle expands and contracts with the waxing and waning tummy. I am just throwing ideas out there. Your video is just what I was looking for. I need petticoats for my sarees and they can't have elastic. They have to be solid enough to tuck a saree into. But I prefer pleats to gathers and your video has answered my dilemma. (I have been following breadcrumbs since watching your hair videos yesterday. )

I love it! How do the pleats hold up after washing? I am transitioning my wardrobe to more natural materials, but ironing all the linen is a lot! Also, Can you tell me more about this blue shirt you’re wearing at the end?
@KatherineSewing
@KatherineSewing 3 года назад
Thank you! 😊 The pleats hold up well, in the beginning I would iron them after a washing but I have’t ironed it in months and it still looks fine. The blue shirt is made from a lightweight cotton and a self-drafted pattern. The pattern was made straight from my loose-fitting bodice block, with short “flutter” sleeves. 😊

Thank you for this helpful video! But I am a bit confused about the width I need for the rectangles. Do I take my hip measurement all the way round three times or just the half of it? Love the way you just do it without worrying too much :)
@KatherineSewing
@KatherineSewing 3 года назад
Ari Luz Thank you, and good question! It is three times your total hip measurement, so each rectangle would be 1.5 times your hip measurement. Hope that makes sense 😊

Thanks for this video. I need a few of these for general wardrobe and appreciate that you did it by machine! I feel like when I'm handsewing it's better to do on something complicated where I need to think slowly and don't want to have to keep unstitching because machine speed is too much. Do you have anything about that green dress you were wearing at the beginning of the video? I NEED that one!

Yeah, I’ve found that hand sewing is actually enjoyable, while machine sewing tends to lead to a whole lot of 🤬 cussing, I’ve discovered I hate it. Hello again I was wondering if making the front piece slightly narrower than the rear, I could put pockets in the front seam? Have you any experience with this? Karen
@KatherineSewing
@KatherineSewing Год назад
I don't think you can attach pockets, because then that would close the side slit which is the means of getting this skirt on/off, and adjusting the fit. In the 18th century, women would wear a separate pocket underneath their skirt, tied around their waist. ☺️
@eileenfb1948
@eileenfb1948 Год назад
I may be wrong but did you tie the front first and then the back? The front should be tied last to cover the back piece at the sides, putting the visible join further back.

I really like this skirt. Is it actually a skirt or a petticoat? Also does this kind of skirt have a special name. I’d like to make a skirt suitable for an 18th century working class woman. Do you think this would be suitable and would they always be pleated or would they sometimes be gathered? Thanks
@KatherineSewing
@KatherineSewing 3 года назад
I call it a skirt because I wear it as an outer layer, but it is the exact same type of construction as an 18th century petticoat, and could be worn as an under-layer. It would definitely be suitable for 18th century costume. I believe they may have been gathered as well. 🙂
