@@Matt.A well glad to hear you got a boat. Opens up way more options. Dragging for channel cats is basically the same way. I would imagine the bait size would be different unless you have big channels in your area. But you can definitely catch flatheads dragging also.
Micka, big fan of yours brother! I’m taking a fellow Veteran fishing on the Cumberland this Sunday. We will be fishing the south end of Old Hickory. I plan to catch some bream (bluegill) skipjack and shad for bait and dragging several 50-60 ft holes I know of in that area. I know you prefer white bass, but I’ve never tried them and honestly wouldn’t know where to look or what to throw at em! Lol. I just want the guy to catch some fish…not targeting big fish, but I do have the equipment to tackle any good fish that bite. My question is do you believe my bait choices will be a waste of time? And, if so, do you have any tips/tricks you would be willing to share to maybe catch some white bass? If it helps, we will be starting around 7 am and fishing until all of our water is gone! Lol. Thanks for any advice you may be able to give. Love your videos man!
@@DannyEstepJr no the bait choices you have will definitely put fish in the boat for sure. I prefer whitebass this time of because they get schooled up and chase shad. Well the bigger fish chase them lol. A food chain type of thing. Plus I drop my chances of catching little fish. Not all but most. Honestly I really couldn't tell you exactly where to find the whitebass. I catch them roaming in the river. Somedays I find the right school and it's quick, most days really have to work for them. But you plan and bait selections will definitely do the trick.
Awesome video. Coop and I do the same thing every now and then. We have our normal spots but then we always try to find new "unfished" spots looking for those monsters.
@@FishingKnotCatching yeah good deal. It worked out for me. So now I'm fishing areas that I typically don't. I've got alot of those. But I'm definitely gonna give em a go.
I would rather most small to medium size boats just stay up on plane and go by because they only throw one or two small short little waves. It’s the guys that think they’re trying to help you out by hitting the brakes 40 feet from you then sending huge waves For the real big boats who just really don’t give a crap. They also suck.
@@bluesdad54 yeah they definitely follow the bait like you said. It's figuring out where they stage before they feed. That's always a fun one to figure out.
@@mickaburkhart14 I suspect that visiting the same stretches of river several times and recording how you do, you begin to see trends. I'm sure a lot of your trip is more interesting to you, to note the similarities and differences over time. and you do share what you see a lot. I appreciate that. stay bllessed.
Thank you for the information and entertainment! Can you recommend a drift sock brand and size that you like? Also how far from the back of the boat do you put the sock?
Very nice and comprehensive video, thank you. I have two questions though. 1) When you have an angle on both sides of the board, how does it pull away from the boat?. Commercial boards have an angle only on one side, so I am confused a bit. 2) How far away from the boat the board can pull? 3) Do you have a demo video that shows the actual use?
@@IcecyOutdoors thank you. No don't have a demonstration video on them. But your first question it the arm with the clip on it allows the angle on to point away from the boat allowing it to pull out. The two angle cuts on the foam just help it cut through the water better. Your second question they can go as far as you want them to go. I run them close like 10 feet from the boat to all the way out to 100 feet or more. I hope that helps. If not feel free to message me back.
@@mickaburkhart14 Thank you. The arm with the clip angle makes sense. I think I will give it a try using your video as a guideline. One more thing, have you tried materials other than plexiglass, like aluminum for example? I am not sure whether aluminum plates would cost more or not, but I guess they may be more durable. And finally how thick is the plexiglass you're using (2 or 3mm, or more?)
@@IcecyOutdoors ok yeah I did start using aluminum. You can use the exact same tools I showed in the video. The aluminum was 18 gauge. I was getting it off of Amazon. It wasn't to expensive. And yes way more durable.
New follower here, thanks for sharing your experience, thoughts and opinions. So far I am really enjoying this channel. There is hardly any boaters courtesy any more. Even the ones who fish don’t have any courtesy in my area lakes in SC. The wake boats and Jet Skis are the worse.
@@rodneyhudson4252 thank you and welcome to the channel. I appreciate your support. Yeah I deal with stuff like that all the time out there. I typically don't put stuff like that in my videos. Always want to keep them positive as possible but that day was ridiculous 😆
@@mickaburkhart14 I understand you don’t want it in the video but I think it’s a great way to make some awareness about the importance of the importance of the situation
Bunch of damn rich asses that mom and dad treated little baby’s there whole damn life so they have no respect because they was never taught any they have no sense because they was never taught any kinda makes you fill sorry for them 😢. Not !!!!!😂
Might be a beginners question , but was he trolling the water and at what speed ? I always assumed you left your bait still down at the bottom . Congrats on the catch !
Yep I was pulling up river against the current at about .3 to .5 mph. I use dragging weights to make sure my bait is right at the bottom. And thank you definitely was an awesome day.
Nice fish,? For you how best is it to stagger rods on each side with planner boards? As in spot 1,2,3 one being outside rod 2 middle and 3 as inside rod ? Do you use 1 as your far outside planner board # 2 as shorter board and 3 as a dragging rig?
@@stonefly7158 yeah my outside rod is my furthest board. The next one in is my shortest board. The one down the center is just that. No board just straight behind the boat. That rod for some reason catches alot of fish.
@@mickaburkhart14 yes thats how i run mine ,my 2 without boards i run one long and other short , but i see some that run there middle rod as outside rod and outside rod as middle
@@stonefly7158 I guess it's all about what works for us and them. I guess there's really no wrong way of doing it. It's kinda cool to see the different setups though.
I fish the Cumberland a lot myself, crazy how deep the river is just north of me! I only know of a few holes within miles of me that even hit 30 feet and the water temperature as well. I’m still just hovering right at 80. I still do really well though been catching some good fish post spawn here for the last few weeks.
@@faronmastin8683 well I know it changes a little bit but not as extreme as the surface temp. But it does shift the bait up or down, in or out depending on the location. Course that drives the position of the fish. Well in my head that makes sense 😆
Another great video Micka. Your thoughts on a thermocline when water temp gets to 90+ degrees. Do you consider it and only fish a certain water column or no?
@@adamyoung1672 well that all depends. Sometimes fish do get below it in deep water. But if we have good flow we really don't get thermocline. But when we get one I typically fish above it.
Enjoyed the video, you can tell the jackass in the big boat never traveled in a small craft. I’d have stood there with both middle fingers saluting him
Well Done Micka. After good rains in the summer, I have had success fishing creek mouths, but have not seen them actually moving up depth, but not that I could try this year. Still no rain over here, keeps missing E TN. :( We have had 2 days of rain (less than 45 minutes) since June 1st. Zero fish on the move, bait scattered and deep. I will say that the Catfish are very concentrated here with no flow. Recently started re-dragging spots 2 and 3 times where I hook up - and catch again in the same spots on the same trip with double ups. July 4th weekend brings out the worst boaters, almost got my planer boards cut off several times on yesterday's charter. They probably would not like getting 60lb braid in their prop.
Good day fishing . You would go crazy summertime fishing some of the places in go in the chesapeake bay waters . Tons of boats & they rarely slow down as they take their big boats past you . Last trip was about 2 hours and i bet there were 200 boats that came past .
Looked like a good day out man. I got skunked last outing. I need to learn to throw a net for shad and how to locate white bass or something else for bait. I have some frozen skipjack leftover from January when I filled my freezer. Just haven't had much luck with it.
@@mickaburkhart14 Have you used any bluegills in your videos? Definitely curious on your approach with em. I've seen people hook them differently before, and seems to be some conflicting opinions on where is best to hook them for best hook up ratio and to keep the gills a little feisty after dropping em. Would be cool to see how you use em, since a lot of us probably don't/can't throw a cast net to catch shad well. Something I'm going to start practicing for sure though. Thanks as always!
That’s what I thought.. you think every boat that goes by you is expected to slow down?? Really.. the boat wake really only affects you for like less than a couple minutes..suck it up buttercup
