I've been watching your videos for a few years now and always come away from your videos with a renewed love for design. The gusset sleeve has definitely been a game changer in my drafts. Making structured blouses and long sleeve dresses is so much more satisfying when you know they won't ride up! I've been enjoying using your torso sloper with your special sleeve too! It's great having the various sizes right ready to go!

This is an excellent tutorial. I've been making my own tops for archery. They have to be tight fitting, but with great mobility to allow movement of the arms up and down, but that usually means that the body will pull up as well. This is just what I needed!!

I’m so fortunate to have found this video. I sewed the arm and side seams of a woven coverlet together last night tandem found it a bit tight across the back and then realise it is too tight under the arms and biceps. Just wondering if you have a video that shows how to extend the gusset down the side as well. I love this fabric and would love to fix my mistakes. I have just enough fabric to redraw the sleeves, but would need to insert fabric down the sides. Any assistance you may be able to offer would be so much appreciated. Kind regards Heidi
@susaneliascouture
@susaneliascouture 2 года назад
Thank you for the comment. It is perfectly acceptable to add a panel down the armhole to the side seams as an alteration if the fabric allows. The ideal is to make sure the front and back pieces always have extra ease at the armhole side seams to accommodate a sleeve. Usually around 2” more then the body measurements around the bust first.

Thank you so much! I have such difficulty inserting gussets but I want to move my arms. I tried this out on a just-the-shoulder mockup and it leaves me as free-armed as a generous gusset insert. I'll be making a full shirt with this very soon.

Thanks Susan, your tutorials are always very interesting. This is great, and I'm definitely going to try this on my next blouse. It's so annoying when the blouse keeps riding up if you move. Now my brain is very busy trying to work out how you'd do a similar thing to achieve a crotch gusset for leggings. Best wishes, Tracy

I watch a few sewing videos as 'edutainment' but my main interest is in sewing clothes to obtain a better fit for my 'non-standard' body shape. Your videos are the ones that really give me the tools to create basic shapes that will fit me. Thank you. (I am subscribed to your RU-vid channel and mailing list but am not sure if the giveaway is open to international viewers)

This video is amazing! You're so inspiring! I'm now wondering this: would it be possible to incorporate the gusset on the bodice as well? I'm thinking, extending the side seam outward a little bit underneath the armscye, then blending it in with the rest of the side seam, the same way you did with the underarm seam on the sleeve. Combined with the gusset sleeve this would give an even greater range of motion. Or would this just sag and fit strangely?
@susaneliascouture
@susaneliascouture Год назад
Thank you! The armhole has to be just right! Do not extend the underarm. The gusset has the excess already to help with movement. I NOW offer the three piece dress sloper with a gusset sleeve in a pdf printable file on my website. Here is the store link: eliascouture.com/store

Hi thank you for this tutorial, may i ask how big the square pcs to cut,! Do i sew sleeves 1st before I put squares pcs on ! Please thank you
@susaneliascouture
@susaneliascouture 3 года назад
My gusset sleeve insert is a triangle that measures 6" by 6". The video shows you how to make the sleeve without the triangle piece needed. I hope that makes sense.
@dannadjd2263
@dannadjd2263 3 года назад
Thank you, is that mean i still can insert square pcs after i adding a gusset to sleeves!or i don't need to add a gusset, just insert square 6cm on ? Please thank you
@susaneliascouture
@susaneliascouture 3 года назад
@@dannadjd2263 no, you must either insert a triangle piece if needed or a long rectangle panel if it needs width all the way down (the under sleeve and side seam) I hope that makes sense
@okamidt3298
@okamidt3298 2 года назад
Can this be done with a short sleeve or does it have to be long sleeve? Short as in elbow/ low bicep.
@susaneliascouture
@susaneliascouture 2 года назад
It doesn't matter the length of the sleeve. The gusset is under the armhole, so it will not effect it
@okamidt3298

@@susaneliascouture Thanks for the response! Another question: if I purchase your printable patterns, how do I use them to my measurements/ how do I make them fit a garment I’m trying to make? Sorry if it’s a silly question, I know absolutely nothing about clothesmaking. I’m trying to make a short-sleeve tunic and need a gusset to prevent riding up but would rather it not be very visible like with the diamond gusset. This seems like a good option to me but I’m not understanding how I would make this fit onto any shape of arm hole or torso as I assume they aren’t all the same. Thanks for the help :) Edit: I only ask because the tunic tutorials I’m following don’t give patterns and don’t show how to make patterns. I’d be free handing the sleeve hole and am unsure how I would make sure they fit together. I wear a men’s M for reference.
