If you are not comfortable with a Dremel, please practice using one BEFORE attempting this! This is for educational purposes only, and for experienced viewers with hand tool knowledge/skill. I am NOT responsible for any injuries you may give yourself if you are not ready and skilled as seen in this video!

I find that people who use their gear have no problem modifying it to meet their needs and make it their own. You found a need for a sharpening choil while others reshape a finger choil, add gimping, reshape handles, change blade grinds/angles, or whatever else catches their eye. It is no longer a collector but it is definitely one of a kind yours that anyone who knows you will recognize the tool even without any initials gouged in. Your friends and relatives will explain it to others after you have long gone. “She used her shit!”

Haha yes!!! Some people hate sharpening choils, I love them! All depends on the person! Thanks so much for watching!!!

It's a chore to add a choil. Dremels in the wrong hands makes repair shops happy. Every on that I have shown my Mink to has really liked it. Hope you had a fun weekend Erica.

If you already have a Dremel you can often find separate accessory tools, like the cut-off wheel and replacement blades, available at hardware, woodworking, or hobby stores. This is a good way to personalize a knife or make it more useful. Great job, Erica.

I have done the same thing many times and have showed the process in a few videos. It really is super easy to do. One tip is switch hands. Hold the Dremel in the left hand and the knife in the right. This way the sparks go down when you grind rather than up towards your face and eyes.
@ericasedc
@ericasedc 21 день назад
I should practice that!

i dont usually like sharpening choils, but that small one that you just did looks nice! you can reshape those cut off wheels with a diamond stone if you want more detail.

@ericasedc 21 день назад
Thanks Joe! I try to keep them tiny so I can have a sharpening advantage, but it doesn’t affect cutting at all. You can barely see the lil guy! Hope you’re having a great weekend 🥰

Neat! I create sharpening choils with a DMT round, conical file. More important - even when a blade has a choil, the first thing I look at is the plunge grind and often enlarge the choil to clear it from the plunge grind! Keep rockin'!

I use a small diamond round file for this, as it gives you very good control and gets the job done cleanly and relatively quickly.

I don’t understand the point of this. I have a pm2 I’ve had and carried for a decade, I’ve sharpened it probably hundreds of times and I’ve never had any issues at the base of the knife and the blade has maintained a consistent shape. I’ve had knives with choils from the factory and I’ve found these blades have a tendency to get hung up on material when cutting.
@ericasedc
@ericasedc 21 день назад
If you listen to the video with the volume on, you may understand. Have a wonderful day, and thanks for watching&commenting!
@landocalrissian5180
@landocalrissian5180 21 день назад
@@ericasedcI heard you say it’s because it’s supposedly difficult to sharpen that area, did I hear wrong? In my experience my knives have maintained a consistent shape over decades of use without a choil. If it was the case that I couldn’t reach that area then there would be an arch at the base of the cutting edge where steel has been removed to a lesser degree over time. I haven’t experienced that, but I might have a different sharpening technique than you and your mileage may vary. I didn’t intent for my comment to sound critical.

@ericasedc
@ericasedc 21 день назад
@@spacewaffles1151 I’m just not sure what to say. Having full access to the edge bevel makes it easier to sharpen. That’s why sharpening choils are added to a lot of knives now. I’m not really sure how to elaborate any further- hence why the video’s only 5 minutes long. Have a nice day!
@landocalrissian5180
@landocalrissian5180 21 день назад
@@ericasedc Yeah that’s cool, whatever floats your boat. I’m sure if people didn’t like them they wouldn’t put them on knives. I’m just like, “if you’re worried that 1mm being dull, guess what’s more dull? A choil.” lol Dig your videos 😉
