A watermark in PowerPoint is a text background that informs people that your presentation is either DRAFT or CONFIDENTIAL or TOP SECRETE or PROJECT ALPHA or whatever.
The point of a watermark stamp is to inform your colleagues the status of your document, so that they don't for example, send the DRAFT presentation onto a client or colleague as final, or accidentally share a CONFIDENTIAL file outside of your organization.
Whatever kind of watermark you are adding to your slides as a background image, the first questions you want to ask yourself before you start making it are:
1. Do you want your watermark on all of your PowerPoint slides as a background image, or just on a few of them?
2. Do you want your watermark to be editable in the normal view, or do you want it to be non-editable?
The reason these questions are important is they determine where you add the draft or confidential watermark within your presentation as the background image.
Assuming you want your draft or confidential stamp on all of your slides as a text background that is NOT editable, you want to add the watermark on your PowerPoint slide master.
If you just want your draft watermark on a single slide, simply add the watermark on the child slide layout within your slide master (see video for instructions).
If you want your draft watermark on all of your slides within you presentation, you'll want to add it to the Parent Slide (see video for instructions and demo).
Two methods for adding your watermark stamp are:
1. You can add the stamp using text, creating a text background
2. You can add the stamp using an image, creating an image background (in this case it will be draft picture instead of draft text)
Whichever method you choose, you want to make sure that your stamp is sent to the back of your slide, so that your draft or confidential watermark shows up behind everything else on your slide.
If you use a draft picture to create your stamp, I recommend using the picture tools to washout the picture, so that it looks like a draft stamp. If your image is too sharp, your stamp will be too distracting.
Remember, you are just trying to indicate the status of a document (draft, confidential, top secret, etc.) you are not trying to have the stamp or watermark dominate your slide.

How can i put an image water mark on powerpoint such that it appears above the images in slides as well ? It hides behind the bigger images in the slides. I want the image watermark to appear above images as well.
@Nutsandboltsspeedtraining
@Nutsandboltsspeedtraining Год назад
Hi Shah. Yes, anything you put on the Slide Master that isn't a placeholder will be put in the background, behind anything else that's added to the slide in the Normal View. There are some work-arounds, such as inserting a placeholder that you will use as the watermark, but then you have to type it in on each slide. So I recommend placing a watermark as a pattern or in an area that you know will always be blank so that it's visible. Hope that helps.

Nice video! I didn’t know about the tile option. I sometimes find that having image backgrounds on slides bloats the file size significantly so I avoid using it. Have you noticed that too?
@Nutsandboltsspeedtraining
@Nutsandboltsspeedtraining 6 лет назад
David Benaim Thanks David! Happy to hear you learned something new 😀 Yes, in general, adding a picture to the background does increase the overall size of the file - very good point. I generally put things directly on the slide master because I like to be able to go back and edit it. But if you want to 100% protect the background, you will want to put the image inside the master background. But make sure you reduce the image size first. Cheers!

Hello, how can you get the watermark to sit in front/ in the foreground of the content in each slide, and not the background?
@Nutsandboltsspeedtraining
@Nutsandboltsspeedtraining 11 месяцев назад
Great question. That is tricky as anything you put on the Slide Master will by default, be behind all your other content. To get it on top of your content, you would need to add the Watermark in the Normal View, which means you would have to copy and paste it onto all your slides manually (which will be a pain on both ends of the deck). That is, building it and later updating it (or moving them).

Great explanation, I was able to follow. But when I finished the watermark was behind the split (white/black) screen with just a sliver showing in the middle. How the heck do I get it on the top layer and not behind? Thanks again, really great.

Excellent series. could you please explain how to add watermark on one slide only.
@Nutsandboltsspeedtraining
@Nutsandboltsspeedtraining 4 года назад
To add a watermark to a single slide, you will want to add it to the Child Slide Layout on the slide master. View Tab - Slide Master and find the child slide layout. Just be aware, that if you TRULY only want it on one slide, you might need to duplicate the child slide layout and add the watermark. If you don't, any slide in your presentation using that child slide will get the watermark. For more help with this, see part #3 of my PowerPoint template series below, where I discuss tweaking your child slide layouts. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Kv9jnnmGXBs.html

How do I get the watermark to stay when I print the slides?
@Nutsandboltsspeedtraining
@Nutsandboltsspeedtraining 2 года назад
As long as you set the watermark up on your slide master, it should show up as a background graphic on your slides when you print it. If you do not see the watermark, it probably means that you have selected "hide background graphics" on one or more of your layouts. For example, if you put the watermark on the Parent slide of your Slide Master (which forces it onto all of your Child Slide layouts), but then select to Hide Background Graphics on your Child slide layouts, then the watermark you created will not show on those specific Child slide layouts. Let me know if that doesn't make sense, or if you are having a different problem and I will see if I can help you out.

@Nutsandboltsspeedtraining
@Nutsandboltsspeedtraining 5 лет назад
Yes, if you want your Watermark above your content, you will want to bring it to the front on your slide master (so it's above all your other content placeholders). We also wrote this video up as a step-by-step blog post if that is easier to navigate, you can check it out here: nutsandboltsspeedtraining.com/powerpoint-tutorials/how-to-make-a-watermark/

I’m guessing if somebody gets a copy of your PowerPoint they can easily delete your watermark right? I’m just wondering if there’s a way to make it a permanent watermark (Unremovable) so no one tries steal your presentation and pawn it off as their own
@Nutsandboltsspeedtraining
@Nutsandboltsspeedtraining 2 года назад
Great question. You are correct, adding a watermark like this is always removable. For your situation, what I would do is save your presentation as a picture presentation. That automatically converts all your slides into pictures, but still leaves it in a native PowerPoint environment so you can run it as a normal slide show. The only downside is you will lose any animations and effects. You can see how to do that here: nutsandboltsspeedtraining.com/powerpoint-tutorials/protect-your-powerpoint-presentation/

@Nutsandboltsspeedtraining
@Nutsandboltsspeedtraining 3 года назад
Double-check that you add your watermark to the Parent Slide on your slide master (the biggest one). If you still don't see the watermark on your child slide layouts (the smaller ones in the slide master), double-check that you have not selected "Hide Background Graphics" on the Slide Master tab. Let me know if that fixes it for you.

Unfortunately, unless all of the graphics in your presentation have a transparent background and you only use tables with no color, then the watermark just gets covered by slide content. A watermark should be applied in FRONT, not behind.

It was just the right amount of communication for me to learn how to do this. Of course, I was actually watching with the hopes of learning a skill that I plan to use, so I think I am the intended audience. Mr. Khan can just go ahead and stay annoyed that people use their words to explain things.
