ONLY use this for like an extra cell charger.. please. No toaster or hairdryer.. as others already mentioned in the comments this could lead to disaster. So don’t go changing every damn switch in your house to these even though it seems convenient. I added one of these to a home with a little “charging shelf” below the switch for their phone to rest on after identifying a neutral was present, it was a 20A breaker and there was only three plugs on the circuit so I felt confident it was ok. It’s a nice addition situationally but proceed with caution.

All of you "experts" need to explain why this type of switch would be a problem? Where I'm from the same wire that provides current for outlets, runs light switches as well. Also, why would Eaton sell it, if it was so dangerous?
@joeythefoxxo
@joeythefoxxo 9 месяцев назад
A lot of municipalities have local codes that specify against lighting and outlets being on the same circuit. You also make it a lot easier to overload a circuit depending on what loads are on the switch/ outlet. Eaton sells it because there are specific use cases for this. It’s not meant to just add an outlet wherever you feel. It’s meant to be able to only have one box that has both the switch and outlet. My utility closet has one for easier maintenance. I wouldn’t recommend just slapping these in bedrooms or living rooms.

Of course this only works if there's both a hot and a neutral in the switch box. If the hot goes to the light and they only dropped the hot and the switch leg down to the switch box you cannot do this unless you cheat and use the ground as a neutral which is against code. Grounds are not to be used for carrying current in a circuit in place of a neutral.

This would not work in most older homes as well. Grounds are almost never run to a switch box. Most electricians in 80's and 90's ran a single 14/2 to a light fixture (and if your lucky they wired in on the hot side. but many switched the neutral)
@davidmarquardt9034
@davidmarquardt9034 Год назад
This is called a switch loop. Very common in older wiring, the white neutral is then reidentified with black tape. Also with this setup depending on if the jumper terminals are used. you can have it as a "hot" outlet (always on) and the switch turns on a ceiling light, or use the jumper to have a switched outlet.

@@Makitafan the standard of electrical safety means that voltage is perfectly safe. Everything is designed with testing and repair in mind. The higher voltage means greater efficiency meaning we have higher power appliances on same size conductors as 120v systems. My comment with regards to this video is that you have a lamp running off a socket circuit which is massively over-rated for a lamp. Having wires wrapped round a terminal, at the side of the outlet absolutely baffles me. There's no logical reason to not have compression fittings at the rear of the outlet meaning if there was any mechanical damage causing protrusion of the outlet, you're not going to have a) exposed conductors and b) wire wrapped round a screw that can easily undo at the right angle.
