For all those who are owners or fans of Draglines, here is our take on how to go about adjusting clutch bands on a 22-RB. If anyone who is knowledgeable on the subject and can add additional helpful information please leave comments. We all had to start somewhere and I hope this video goes a little way to giving an explanation to those that need help.
Side note:- because of the age of this machine 70yrs give or take. I'm finding it difficult to track down spare parts, in particular for the 6YDA MK2 Air Cooled Engine. It appears to be an Indian buit Ruston Hornsby Engine, which further complicates the issue. So anyone with contacts please share them in the comments as well.
Cheers Adrian.

It seems apparent that learning to operate this crane is very much a "hands on", trial & error process, with incremental control lever movements until the operator becomes more familiar with level control functions.

Yes it was exactly as you say. I haven't been out to the farm for a while so hope to have one or two more videos in the not too distant future. Cheers.

Very good description of clutch adjusting, there probably are specs but from experience it is readjusting until you get the lever pressure which works good. Sometimes if in a hard pull traveling they may have to be tightened. Good description of how controls work and emphasizing disengaging machinery for safety. When attempting a pivot turn in soft ground I found it helpful to make slight turn and stopped track will start to push up small mound of dirt, then back up a bit and start turn again and as machine moves forward the track will travel on small dirt pile pushed up by first turn, when track is centered on small dirt pile lock track and pivot and machine will turn much easier. I have used high travel speed on long moves, works best if track tumblers are oiled up with drain oil and also when in high gear you disengage engine clutch, engage high gear and use engine clutch to start travel so no reversing, machine will cover a lot of ground a lot faster. Never used it much but but if you have a long walk from unloading point to work point it is nice. Based on my experiences 45 years ago. Adrian, have fun working with it or should I say playing with it. Once again, good explanations Dan!

The jack screw on the dead end of the band is to prevent the band dragging when the clutch is disengaged - adjust it so that the end of the band just clears the inside of the drum when the clutch is disengaged. There are similar jack screws located around the inside of the band which need to be adjusted to centralise the clutch band when it is disengaged to also prevent drag and premature wear. I may be wrong, but it appeared to me that someone has previously replaced the live and dead end sections of the lining on the clutch which you were adjusting, leaving the centre worn sections clear of the inside of the clutch drum - if that is correct, then you have probably lost 50% of the power transmission surface, which will have a marked effect upon the performance of that clutch. The boom hoist merits a show all of its own ! The over-run clutch, on the other end of the chain drive, is hidden away in the main gear case, behind the small circular bolted cover, low down at the front of the gear case. A small friction clutch engages a pawl on the inside of a small drum driven by the main gearing. If the boom hoist unwinds at a faster rate than the drum is turning, then the pawl engages and limits the rate of descent, which is proportional to engine speed. Early 19 RBs were not fitted with this arrangement, the boom hoist being a jaw clutch on the front shaft, using the engine clutch to control raising - lowering was by gravity, using the band brake for control - often times an underwear changing experience ! Kind regards, Steve A.

Thanks Steve. I will have to go back through your comments and save them into a fold on my computer. You're a wealth of knowledge mate and it's appreciated. Sad to say, I am considering putting her up for sale. I would like one last go on a real job, but it doesn't look like that will happen. I could easily spend another $20k in machining and repairs, with no real hope of recuping anything. It is $1000 to move her to the nearest museum if I want to display her or if they have an event. So not really worth it.

hey Adrian, thanks for the video--you literally taught me how to operate the basics on a BE 22B i recently bought. I have a questions I hope you can answer: All of the clutch pads on my clutch drums are about 1/16" off of the drum when not engaged , except for the boom hoist clutch pad. That pad is about 1/4 to 3/8" off away from the drum. The manual says that this clutch self adjusts, and in fact the only adjustment possible is to tighten the spring nut. Does the amount of gap between the pad and the drum seem normal? Thanks

First of all, congratulations! You have now joined the brotherhood of those wishing to remain poor hahaha. No not really. Hey mate I'm not real good with imperial as I'm a bit of both and the bloke you see explaining is the mechanic Dan Taylor not me. However, if you start by adjusting your clutches when the machine is cold, so the throw of the lever has sufficient tension when cammed over that it is not impossible to push it that and it is as the book suggests then that is your starting point. You have 2 adjustments for each band. One is the tension spring on the actuating end of the clutch and the other side is the small screw with a small spring for tension which keeps the dead end of the band just off the drum. Also I will add here that unlike mine you should have a leaf spring on the clutch band guide where the stud on the band goes through, this is to keep even tension all the way round the band. So, I have found that mine is not getting proper adjustment and I have had to adjust my clutches up to compensate. The problem then is that when you work the machine, the drums expand and the clutches start to grab even when disengaged. You will find you will have to play with adjustment the more you work the machine. You should have just enough gap to allow the drums to turn with out grabbing. Make sure you keep oil away from the drums and use brake cleaner and a high pressure water jet to clean them if they do get contaminated. AWAY FROM THE MACHINE. I had a bad day when I took advice that was probably not quite followed correctly. I hope this helps, if you have issues, let me know and I will put you onto someone more experienced than I. Cheers from Australia 🇦🇺

I think that worked out ok. Sounds like i have half an idea of what im talking about Haha. I beleave that you can fully release the boom hoist brake with engine running and it will lower under engine speed on that brake item i though was a saftey override.

Please tell me about boom setting
@adriannettlefold9084
@adriannettlefold9084 Год назад
I'm not an expert, and my machine doesn't have an attached load chart. However, the boom angle is set for the maximum reach of the bucket away from the machine. This distance, is determined by the length of the boom and weight of counterweights as opposed/matched against the capacity of the bucket. My boom is more for crane work and is approximately 45ft long. The bucket I have is 1/2 yd bucket. The lowest I can set the boom angle to is approximately 37°, but I work it closer to 40- 45°. I would have to have larger counterweights and shorten the boom to be able to use larger capacity buckets. At the lower boom angle. I hope that answers your question. ( Also having the boom at higher boom angles allows you to use the teeth on the bucket to drag and spread material, rather than digging or smoothing) Good Luck.

I am use to running a dragline where pull-in is hoist up and pull-in is drag in. Do I just flip the linkages below cab?
@adriannettlefold9084
@adriannettlefold9084 Год назад
I am not sure to be 100% honest. It seems odd that yours has the winching action occurring when you pull the levers towards you. The Rustons were designed to have that occur when you push away from you, as a means of providing support to the operator in the seat. My manual gives instructions on changing linkages over in a particular way, so you can use a clamshell or shovel front which requires the ability to push and pull the levers, giving power to the winch drums in the opposite direction. So, I would say it would make sense to flip over bell cranks and linkages underneath if you wanted it to function in the opposite throw of the lever. Contact Dan on his RU-vid channel as seen in the credits he may be able to give a more detailed answer. Cheers.

@@adriannettlefold9084 Its currently set up when you push it winching begins. We only run drag buckets in South Louisiana and its easier for us to pull making it winch and pull making hoist! But thanks and will do.
