I was really happy to see and listen to this! I called an HVAC business for help in sealing the duct from my wood burning furnace. That attic insulation looks quite sparse and uneven. That is a critical factor regarding overall comfort in the home and heating/cooling efficiency. Also the fiberglass blown insulation actually has a lower R-value than cellulose. Things to think about.

Another good video, thanks. I’m in the process of incapsulating my Crawlspace and the other day when I was down there the hvac unit kicked on and I noticed massive amount of air coming in from around original crawlspace door gaps. Where’s that air going?
@CrawlSpaceNinja
@CrawlSpaceNinja Год назад
It is possible for leaks in the return and supply lines of your HVAC system to allow dirty crawl space air to enter the ducts. Your living space will then receive this air directly from the system. It is therefore important to inspect your system on a regular basis.

Here metal ducting already installed. But what's your thought's on a rigid PCV or ABS square ventilation duct, rather than metal ducting? The reason I ask is that this type of ventilation flat duct can be used with self seal connectors. So mastic tape doesn't need to be used to seal the joints. and you don't have metal seams that can also attribute to some air loss.
@pauleohl

No plastic for ducting because of toxic fumes if a fire occurs. Strictly forbidden.

Hi. I learned quite a bit from your video. I came acrossed it while looking for a how to seal a 4" sheet (aluminum?) metal pipe that is used to vent our indoor pool heater. Last February our CO2 detector went off and it was determined that the leak was coming from the vent pipe that runs along the ceiling in the basement. What do you recommend using to seal off a vent that gets to high temps?
@hotrodhog2170

Sounds like you are talking about a single wall pipe which is now against code. Need to replace all of it with a double wall or even a triple wall pipe for the high temps you are referring to.

Richard Gonzales crawlspaceninja There are at least some take offs (trunk to run connectors) that I know of that are somewhat self sealing. Found them at home depot for about $5 a piece for 6" take offs. They are gasketed on the contact surface (unlike a standard tabbed takeoff) with four holes for sheet metal zip screws to positively attach and support the takeoff/duct. My local depot stocked the flat take offs for rectangular sheet metal duct, but I do believe they make saddle shaped take offs for round trunks as well. You may have to order those online. Thanks for the video btw! I'm in the middle of this very project in my attic right now!

Did you cut new insulation to wrap the ducts or did you use the existing that was there and re- wrap it and re-tape it using it the foil tape? Fairly new home owner in a house that is over 100 years old and trying to cut down on utility expenses. You're video has been very helpful! Thanks
@IntelCoreI77700K
@IntelCoreI77700K 3 года назад
If your house is 100 years old, you might as well forget about effeciency. The ductwork is probably the best thing effeciency wise compared to the rest of the house. You might be able to get a weatherization assistance group to come out and work on it, but it's hard to bring the numbers in those things down. Insulating it will help, but the main killer is air sealing. Balloon framing is horrible.
@functionalvanconversion4284
Informative video, thank you! What are your thoughts of using those foam can kits they sell on Amazon that apply 1" over the steel ductwork then wrapping batting insulation? That foil tape USED TO BE great, 15 years ago. When you'd peel it back you could smell a super glue like smell from that, then, bad azz adhesive. Todays foil tape won't last a year before it falls off. Use mastic instead to seal ducts. Oh and clean/wipe down before you seal. PS, you need to apply mastic to a nickle coin thickness minimum.

@CrawlSpaceNinja

Ideally it should be insulated so that energy is not wasted as the air travels through the duct work. Insulation will also make the ducts less likely to condensate. Anne Johnson I would suggest doing a Google search for a home energy auditor. Try to find one with BPI (building performance institute) or RESNET certifications. They will perform an energy audit on your home by depressurizing it with a blower door and then testing your home for leaks. It costs a couple hundred dollars but it tells you EXACTLY where to apply money/time/effort for the greatest return on investment. They should also be, or know of, a great air sealing/insulation contractor and be as helpful as Mr. Crawlspaceninja here!

1- clean the duct work before taping with foil tape (not mastic tape) to remove dust, 2- never use hands to smooth out foil tape- use a squeegee 3- use MASTIC---(its not mastic tape)- mastic is liquid acrylic caulk- you paint it on. You cover the tape. Sorry to be critical about your video- but taping is only a small part of the job- it has to be sealed with mastic. that is how you properly seal your duct work---refer to the ACCA manuals.

I've used foil mastic tape before and it provides a secure airtight seal as good as duct butter. When you're doing upgrades of poor installs under less than ideal conditions, you can't always follow the "book".

Instead of mastic, if you have some old house paint, USE IT. It's a rubberized latex coating that works outside in the sun (outdoor paint). Clean/prep the surface and glob away. Leave the lid off till the paint thickens a touch. Easy way to recycle that old paint.

If your re-taping ever 5' of duct connect, your acerbating the air leakage problem which already is inherent in old nasty filthy duct insulation wrap. Its nearly impossible to effectively seal that many linear cuts in old dirty wrap. Two things I see need pointed out. Resealing any existing duct work is very difficult to do correctly. Often the physical duct structure can not be moved enough to apply tape correctly. Nor can the correct hand tool called a squeegee be used. But the second problem, is attempting to duct tape old dirty dust covered insulation foil and still maintain the vapor barrier after sealing air leaks. Its a conundrum! I see this is a dated video and assume your company have made improvements in this area of your craft. We do not use mastic the duct tape but in limited areas. Its does not hold long term to Our Standards and now use 181 duct tape and applied duct butter on everything. I do not have an answer for filthy old insulation except remove to a place that can be at cleaned. We found bubble wrap to be helpful in these places. We as a company stop use fiberglass insulation about 7 years ago and stop using it internally in 1992. We assist our builders with their crawlspace designs using the semi air condition IRC building code application. The dehumidifier is only applied in extreme cases.
