How to align the drive belt on an Indian Scout Bobber 

Like others, (and maybe yourself), I am also OCD with this belt adjustment debacle. I have had bike on stand so many times, and am no farther ahead than when I started. As you mentioned, I am primarily focusing on tension 1st, then some sort of alignment. Now, to complicate matters, I started using a digital caliper to measure exposed thread length on axle keepers/adjusters. Amazingly, I found I was only off by a few 64th's. Now for me to get belt to track more inboard, (centered belt) that No. will increase, meaning tire may no longer be in alignment. As other have mentioned, alignment on the stand, and 20 miles later are 2 different animals. Seems like there must be a better way, that would work for everyone on the 1st try. As I am retired, and still have hair to pull out, I will continue this quest and report back when I find a solution. Always enjoy you videos. Mike

I've found that the easiest, most efficient way is to to ride it down to my local bike shop and give them $25 to align the belt. They're right next to a local craft brewery so it's a win-win.

What kind of stand did you use to lift the bike? I would like to align the belt myself, but need the stand first. Thank you in advance, I appreciate your instructional videos.

You should be able to adjust tension/alignment without loosening the axle? Or you have to loosen the axle?

Is it normal for a new bike/belt to shed some rubber pieces during break in? Had my bobber couple weeks and I see small pieces of rubber stuck to bike around belt.

Hi ! I try 100 times and this is not work properly! It’s impossible! I did my tension on left at first! Then i was adjusting only right side to get belt travel properly 1/16 at time and never get properly! If i get properly then my left side thread adjuster will be not equal at all with right side adjuster! I try multiple times and nothing! When it’s hot outside and i am shifting down i can fill my belt ! When it’s not hot outside is all ok ! My belt travel always to the left ( lookig from the back bike)not matters what i do ! My belt was like that since i get new from factory! I go dealer to ajust and it’s same

How important is this? Honestly probably the most frustrating things I’ve done in a while lol I’ve had this damn thing jacked up probably 5 times now trying to get the belt aligned and it’s aligned and then I ride and it goes back to the right typically

I have probably 6-7 hours invested in getting the alignment right. My experience is you get it set, go for a ride and it’s no longer aligned it’s off to one side. (I did take a paint marker though, and painted the side of a few belt teeth, and it doesn’t wear off, so it’s not rubbing hard if at all.) I have had several bikes over the years, and Indian seems to be the only one to have a real concern in regards to belt alignment. Harley mostly cares about tension, and the wheel being straight, if this requires the belt being off to one side a little, so be it. So my conclusion is to just mainly worry about the tension. Even if it would wear the belt slightly, I’d bet you’ll still get 40-50k out of a belt easy. To top it off a replacement belt is only 200 bucks, and can be changed easily without wheel removal on the scout. Motorcycling is already a expensive, what’s another 200 bucks on 13k bike with 2-3k or more in accessories? To me it’s well worth risking the potential 200 bucks to not even worry about the alignment anymore, just check the tension when I change the oil and done.
