Learn how to apply pure and polymerized tung oil to wood. In this video I review preparing the wood to assure a great looking finish. Preparation involves sanding to between 300-400 grit sandpaper for the final sand. We recommend a minimum of 5 coats. Coats are applied daily when using polymerized tung oil. Pure tung oil should be applied only when the prior coat is dried. This often takes days to weeks depending on temperature and humidity. Thinning is important to assure oil penetration and absorption. Each of the first four coats are applied at different thinning ratios. The fifth and subsequent coats (if desired) are applied at full strength with no thinning. A light sanding with a 300-400 grit sandpaper is recommended between each coat. Sanding dust most be fully removed by vacuuming (or blowing with compressed air), followed by tack clothing, and a wipe down with a mineral spirit dampened rag. The final coat is not sanded after applied but instead can be sanded with the paper from a brown paper bag. This paper is coarse enough to remove minor imperfection (settled dust) and fine enough so as not to negatively affect the sheen. Once the thinners have evaporated the surface tung oil finish is considered food safe. Those worried about thinners off-gassing harmful vapors can substitute citrus thinner instead. Tung Oil is one option in my complete video series on refinishing furniture. See below for a list of my wood finishing videos.

Nice tutorial. I've done a few gun stocks with tung oil. After i build up a nice layer, I use Armorall Original formula as a catalyst. Add a tiny bit of oil, a spritz of Armorall, and hand rub for about 15 minutes or until it's no longer tacky. Heat from rubbing helps it to cure. I can do about 8 -12 coats (depending on wood) in an evening. It will look like glass. I use synthetic 0000 steel wool between coats to tame any high spots. You have to get a few coats in the wood before you can use the quick dry catalyst method. When the pores are almost gone, you can start the method. It is, however, a workout. 😂

You're a beautiful soul. Thank you for passing on decades of experience in clear, concise, and easy to follow instructions. The extra print outs so I can go step by step in the shop without jiggering around a video. Treasure! You're discussion of what you're doing, why you're doing it, and how others apply it give me the intellectual grasp I need to more confidently move forward on restoring wooden sliding glass doors my grandfather built and which I consider to be precious treasure. I've researched this topic fairly intently and your video is the best informational I've seen on application. What a great gift you give those who follow you in time so that we can know how a master would worker would do it. (If without the skill level of decades of refinement.) You rock. Thank you!

Thanks Paul for your presentation. I am also a 40+ year woodworker and just wanted to say your procedure is spot on. I do it the same and the results are marvelous. I love tung oil because of its simplicity to apply and no other finish gives the look that tung oil does. Just wanted to say well done and keep up the good work.

I've been reclaiming barnwood for 41 years. And my woodworking began with barnwood and I have never enjoyed it more than I do to this day!! I go to hundreds of wood working sites just to continually explore new ways, old ways, right ways, wrong ways, and so on.. Hats off to you sir! You are a MASTER of your craft.. the way that you explain things is very very basic manor, you keep it simple! Yet very interesting and we need more people like you to introduce woodworking to our younger generations!! I have had the pleasure over the years to teach and mentor many young men and a few young ladies the art of woodworking and several have went on to be very successful wood Craftsman and businessmen. The accomplishments that you experience in woodworking is the product you create! And there are woodworkers that are I would say less than!! There are a lot of mediocre woodworkers. But there's only a very small handful of woodworkers that are what I call Masters! The Best of the Best the best that teach people how to become the best!! I would certainly add you to that list! Let's keep this thing going I wish I had time to do a RU-vid channel I just don't I have too many projects going on! I have never had any slow time in over 40 years what I do is very unique! I take 200-year-old barn wood I reclaim it I repurpose it and I make it something very unique. Sustainability is very important to me when I see someone with a dilapidated Barn on their property I always pull in the driveway and introduce myself! Generally when I tell the people I want to offer them money for the barn they laugh and say we were going to burn that!! When I hear people say that it just makes me cringe!! and makes me feel like we need to do a lot more for sustainability!! I have loyal customers in several States that I have kept for almost 30 years. I have made barn wood furniture for houses and log cabins that were worth in excess of $10 million dollars. I have also made barnwood furniture for people who live in houses that are worth $40,000. I tell young and upcoming Craftsman one very very important message you can be a mediocre wood Craftsman or you can be a true Craftsman that is a MASTER . And there's one thing that will determine that ..It's the product that you let go out of your shop every single day! And never allow any of your work to leave your shop that you wouldn't put in your own home! After all you're the one that's going to have to look at it for a long time because wood lasts a very very long time if it's taken care of properly.. GREAT JOB sir, love your work I see a lot of passion and dedication!!! I WOOD recommend you for sure!!

Hey Mark. Thanx so much. I was fortunate enough to have a master mentor in my early years. His favorite syaing was "Lay It On Thin" and "It Ain't Thin Enough Out Of THe Can"! And that was back 40 years ago before EPA guidelines required even less thinners. About ten years ago when I was researching varnish brands I found a common thread in reading reviews. It went something like "I will never buy this product again it's full of bubbles" or "It runs terribly don't buy it"! Funny it was all stuff I've used for years without issues. About the same time RU-vid was in it's infancy and for a DIYer like me I learned to make plumbing, electrical, truck and all knds of household repairs mainly because I enjoyed it and couldn't afford to hire a service person. I decided to share what little I knew as a lark. The funny thing is that answering questions daily for the last ten years has made me dig and do research and has made me a better woodworker (wood finisher, anyway). I've been a teacher all my life and like you and your love of barn wood my retirement years are full and fun! God knows you can't get reliable answers at the local hardware store and even more scarey is advise from a big box home improvement store!! LOL Thanx for your comments I wish we were close geographically, I'd love to see your work . . . best paul

Hi again Paul. I have a last set of questions for you--really appreciate your willingness to answer questions. About 10 days after putting that 5th coat of tung oil on my dad's table (I referenced that coat when I contacted you 9 days ago), I decided to add one last coat for good measure. So I sanded it again (after 10 days), but it seemed like the oil hadn't really dried because the sandpaper was a bit gummy, and I wasn't getting much white dust at all. So I gave it a full 2 weeks before sanding, and the result was sort of the same--less gummyness on the sandpaper, but still gummy, and more white dust, but not much. I went ahead anyway, because the previous coats were ready for sanding at 7 days. I reapplied the pure tung oil, and waited 30 minutes before wiping off. It's now been 9 days since I applied that 6th coat. Interestingly, there are some areas in the shape of long streaks that are dull and not shiny, as if they didn't absorb the oil? This hasn't happened on previous coats--I've had a nice, lustrous, uniform finish each time. This 6th coat doesn't look as good as the previous few. Any thoughts on what's happening? Do you need to wait longer and longer for the tung oil to dry with each successive coat? I tried sanding again on Saturday (7 days after the 6th application), and got the same gummy sandpaper. I have been using 600 grit all along. Thanks for any insight you can provide. My dad would love you!
@paulsDIYsolutions
@paulsDIYsolutions Год назад
Hey Jill. Yeah. What's happens is the wood initially sucks up the oil into it's pores and between it's fibers. With each coat less and less penetrates (actually it stops penetrating around the third coat). later coats are actually building up on the surface giving you thickness vs depth. That's why we thin less and less with each coat. You are at a point where the oil is dry on the surface but damp underneath so it requires more and more time to harden off. I don't know where you are geographically but here in the midwest it's getting warmer out and humid which makes a huge difference from winter indoor dryness. This slows dry times. I personally always stop at 5 coats but a lot of woodworkers will go up into the teens. Dry times are rediculous!! Also 600 is a polishing grit it does little for removal I'm usually between 320-400. Now it's time to test your patience. best . . . paul
@JillMartsLodwig-cg6cp
@JillMartsLodwig-cg6cp Год назад
@@paulsDIYsolutions Thanks so much for the explanation, Paul. Makes sense. Next project I won't go above 5 coats. I agree it's overkill. For now, I think I better sand once more, since I already did a sample sanding, and coat once more and be done. I may use a 400 grit this time, since the 600 isn't really doing much anymore.... All the best--your advice has been so helpful!

Hi Paul Thank you for doing this video! I have only a little furniture finishing experience but still have and use my first project from 50 years ago!--it's flawed, I stopped sanding at too low a grit sandpaper, but it is a solid maple dresser in our bedroom and the dark stain I applied 50 yrs ago still appeals to me. Anyway--new project: I had plans to use a colored gel stain on a Hooker low dresser I bought years ago and am finally getting to. It is in pretty good condition but the finish is orangey so I don't like that. I carefully scraped 2 drawers so far and--OH MY--that walnut veneer underneath is gorgeous--sort of a light taupe/beige. So NOW I don't want to cover that natural (or maybe beautifully aged) color up at all especially with anything that will change that wood color I'm exposing. Looking for alternative clear finish ideas is how I found YOU. My Question: 3 of the drawers are solid walnut, but MOST of the piece including 6 other drawers is walnut VENEER. Is there any danger of the veneer lifting if I drench it 5 times with tung oil? Is tung oil finishing just safe for solid wood pieces?
@paulsDIYsolutions
@paulsDIYsolutions 11 месяцев назад
Hey Woof. I wouldn't worry about the oil affecting the glue and raising the veneer. What I would worry about is sanding or scraping the veneer and cutting through it. best . . . paul

I love the idea of using tung oil to nourish and seal the wood. I have a very old side table, in the process of removing the old & failing finish. It is made of poplar, so I will be adding a stain. My question is, with the spindle legs being so dry, is tung oil my best option?
@paulsDIYsolutions
@paulsDIYsolutions 6 месяцев назад
Hey Ginger. Couple things here. You need to know waht the previous finish was. If it is anything other than a pure oil you will have to strip (or sand) it all off, otherwise the oil won't abosrb into the wood and probably won't dry. Second poplar doesn't take stain well. Most woodworkers who use poplar paint it. best . . . paul
@gingercontreras8511
@gingercontreras8511 6 месяцев назад
@paulsDIYsolutions Yeah, I am worried about the stain variations in the poplar. By the way the previous topcoat and color are flaking off, I am guessing they used a shellac and toner. But yes, starting with sanding by hand. Lots of sanding by hand. 😮‍💨

Hi Paul. I loved this - and the results - thank you. One year later, I would like to add a fresh coat. I am hoping you can tell me how to remove these before applying the fresh coat. Thanks Graham
@paulsDIYsolutions
@paulsDIYsolutions Год назад
Hey Graham. I would start by using a #0000 steel wool to see if you can lift those areas. Then do a light wooling of the entire surface. Remove all dust with a quick mineral spirit wipe down and reapply two coats first at a 60% oil/40% mineral spirit ratio. Second coat full strength. You can use either pure tiung oil or polymerized tung oil (the later dries overnight). Assuming your spots are excess oil that dried darker (not sure). Let me know how it turns out. best . . . paul

Hey Paul. I’m extremely new to finishes. Amazing videos with great details! Do you ever discuss trying to fix finishes? Used Amish hutch (excellent condition-was 🤦‍♂️😂), water glass that sweated and daughter “vigorously” tried rubbing off the water stain removing whatever the Amish put on it. From watching one of your videos, maybe linseed oil, since you showed it does do that? I’m just guessing here. I have no clue on wood species. Thanks Paul for any advice you could give.

Hey User. The big box stores sell painters triangles which are nothing more than tiny plastic triangular shaped pyramids. You do the bottom side first then flip onto the pyramids and do the top side. Hey David. Hardwax oils have beed around for a long time I personally gave up on them. I made a pencil post bed many yaers ago and finished it in tung oil. It looks the same as the it did years ago. See what you think after your oil has dried and set up. I think you'll be happy without any additional coatings. The beauty of tung oil is repair if necessary and light sanding in the damaged area and a quick reapply and whala! Apllying extra caotings might interfere with refreshing your surface. best . . . paul

I haven't tried the paper bag wipe. I unroll a bun of 0000 steel wool. Go out side, hold it up, like on a screwdriver, and light it from the bottom. When it seems done, I pat the gray mass lightly and then look closely for thin shiny streaks. Those are unburned "wool." I pull those out since they can scratch. Then reroll the bun and have a VERY soft steel wool pad for final finishing.

Great video. Thank you. I have a question. I have a repair/restoration job. It’s an ash wood with a tung tree oil finish that 10 days ago showed a stain believed to be possibly an oil. This table is 2 years old and was never maintained with new coats. I’m not sure but I’m assuming that due to no maintenance something was able to seep into the pores. I noticed you talked about using a brown paper bag to get rid of issues without ruining the finish. Could this work to remove the stain without the need to do a full sand down and a new oil finish on the entire table. Any advice on what to use?

Hi Paul, Love these videos! We are building a new home in the rainy Pacific Northwest. I am finishing all of the indoor wood (hemfir) doors and fireplace mantels, etc. (red oak and vg fir) by using the polymerized tung oil from Sutherland Welles. Our question is about the exterior soffits. We want to make sure that the exterior polymerized tung oil is appropriate for 1" x 6" tight knot tongue and groove cedar. @paulsDIYsolutions
@paulsDIYsolutions 9 месяцев назад
Hey User. My desk is live edge. Here's the isssue with bark. Wood expands and contracts with seasonal changes. Bark is a loosely held outer skin that protects the tree from infection and blunt foece damage. Once the tree dies the bark is the first thing to get sloughed off. It will last a couple seasons and then venetually fall off. Below the bark is a layer called the cambian. It is darker than the wood and provides some interest to the wood. It will not slough off. Long and short I would remove the bark and you can leave the cambian or scrape/sand it off. bestt . . . paul

Hi Paul, I am so grateful for your knowledge and you have saved me from a disaster. We are installing a custom made (old growth redwood from the early 1960s) fireplace mantel (not a solid beam) that I need to finish and because of the heavy rock surrounding, it can never be removed for a refinish without removing the rock. After watching some of your videos, I decided that a polymer based tung oil is my best option (heat resistance, wont crack, wont yellow, easy to repair). My challenge now is to fill a small crack in the wood with a material that I can apply the oil over. I was really sold with the CA glue and sawdust, but how will that take/look with the tongue oil finish? Would really appreciate your opinion!!
@paulsDIYsolutions
@paulsDIYsolutions 4 месяца назад
Hey CST. Yeah trying to match filler has been a woodworkers nightmare for eternity. From your description it sounds like the mantle is rustic. My first question is is it a character crack? Does it need to be dealth with? Let me know and we'll talk further.
@CSTHunter
@CSTHunter 4 месяца назад
Thank you thank you for your quick reply! The wood was on the roof of a house built in 1963. Dismantled in the early 2000s and covered with a tarp outside in Phoenix Arizona since then. So it was VERY rustic, but the guy who had the wood and made the mantel, planed it and sanded it, so it will have a smooth texture. the small cracks are actually where he joined pieces of wood together, not cracks in the wood itself. It would look ok if I left it that way, but I would prefer to make it appear as solid as possible, thus my idea to fill the small cracks with CA and sawdust before sanding down to a finer finish and making it all smooth at the edges. The wood was rugged and is full of imperfections giving it plenty of character, but I prefer to at least seal up the small cracks (gaps), leaving only the knots as imperfections before finishing it.

The problem you're going to run into isthe glue won't absorb the oil so the color will be off. Don't know how wide the spaces are but if more than say an 1/8th inch you could trim a piece off with a razor knife and glue it in to fill the void. Or you can oil the wood and then oil the saw dust before adding the glue to make your filler paste. This might be close to your color. best . . . paul@@CSTHunter

I am going to stick with 100% pure tung oil to finish a table and I've followed your suggestion to apply multiple coats gradually increasing the tung oil in relation to mineral spirits. In some areas of the table, there is a whitish film. Is this because I did not wait long enough between coats? Would you expect the film to disappear as the oil cures? What would you suggest I do before applying more tung oil?

Hey user. Yeah. It's typically moisture. Can be the results of a few different things. High ambient humidity, moisture in wood, moisture in oil, etc. Should evaporate. This can take 4-6 weeks depending on temperature and humidity). If it hasn't cured it will just gum up your sandpaper. @paulsDIYsolutions
@paulsDIYsolutions Месяц назад
Hey Jeff. Here's what's happening. Oils by nature don't dry and that's why they are such a great libricant for mechicanical parts. Tung Oil along with Linseed Oil are considered a drying oils so becomes a good resource for furniture. This simply means they Dry Hard. The problem with these so called drying oils is they take a long time to dry especially with low temperatures and high humidity. On the first coat the wood is thirsty so the oil quickly soaks in which gives us a sense that the oil is dry (it ain't!). On second coat the wood is less thristy and with each future coat the oil goes from being an absorbed coating to becomong a surface coating ( it just lays on top of the wood). While we want the surface build up we tend not to like the time it takes to dry. Manufacturers realize we are a instant gratification society so they started adding enhancing agents to the oils. One of those is a drying agent. The problem is the oil has been chemically altered and loses the look, feel and durability of the simple pure oil. Tung oil can remain pretty close to pure by polymerization. Polymerization is the process of super heating the oil in a vacuum, This alters it chemically without adding other contaminents. Polymerizing reduces drying time drammatically. Thinning the oil also increases the depth of absorption and decreases dry time. Your issue is normal. In the future try polymerized tung oil and follow thinning recommendations as outlined in my video. Also be sure to do dry test sanding as I recommend in the video. best . . . paul

Hey Allen. Here's the issue. Surface coatings (polyurethane, lacquer, shellac) will fill minute scatch marks (think scratches left from a 180 grit sandpaper). Oils will accentuate them. Now the question becomes how good are you at scrapping? I think Clint Eastwood said it best "Are you feeling lucky today?" Me I would sand before applying. best . . . paul

Hi Paul, great info and clear explanations both here and on your website, so thanks for that. I have just finished making a set of bedside drawers and have a couple of questions regarding finishing. The drawer carcass, tops, rails and false front are made from American white ash and the drawers are made from pine [ the mix due to weight and cost of wood here in NZ]. I am wondering is it best to finish the pine drawers using a polyurethane on the drawers [inside and out] and the tung oil for the carcass and false drawer fronts or use your tung oil and goldspar [marine varnish here in NZ] mix throughout? I want to protect the carcass from the use of the drawers which just run along wood rails. Thanks Andy
@paulsDIYsolutions
@paulsDIYsolutions 8 месяцев назад
Hey Andy. First off, I wouldn't mix for a combo finish. From what I could see on their website Goldspar is a polyurethane based varnish. My combo users tung oil based spar varnish and tung oil. Mixing with polyurethane would be a pretty thick goopy liquid (almost a paste). Second I am wondering why you would consider using two different finishes on your project? These days I prefer polymerized tung oil for fast dry times (not an issue if you have a few weeks for coats to dry). Are you able to get polymerized tung oil in NZ? Let me know and we can chat more. best . . . paul

Hi Paul, thanks for the reply.I have 100% pure tung oil as I can't find polymerized here nor spar varnish, although plenty of marine grade spar for boats which all have alkyd and other oils mixed in as well. I am in no rush to finish as its my own woodwork project so time between coats isn't an issue. The main reason for the 2 different finishes was to provide a strong protective coating on both the pine drawers sides [poly finish only] and the ash carcass [all tung oil] as they will rub when the drawers are opened and closed. If the pure tung oil on its own works with multiple coats on pine and ash then that would be easier. Although it will take some time as I have the 6 drawers inside and out and carcass to do! But it is the natural finish I want not a urethane as the ash is stunning. Many thanks.@@paulsDIYsolutions

Hello Paul, First may I say I really enjoy learning from you. You explain everything clear and concisely. I have an antique pie table that I plan to use tung oil on for my first time using. The table has a lot of carvings in the wood of the legs as well as the spindles going up to the table. I am still working at getting the old finish off those areas. Do you think maybe I should go with a different finish? Theres noway I can sand those areas 5 times. I know the tung oil would be beautiful on the wood of the table top but am confused as to what to do. Your advice please.
@paulsDIYsolutions
@paulsDIYsolutions Год назад
Hey Sweet. Sounds like a great project. Maybe I didn't explain well enough. The reason to sand between coats is more to check to see if the oil has dried enough to apply the next coat and to remove any dust nibs that may have settled on it while drying. If the area you do sand produces a fine powder you are set as it is telling you the previous coat is dry enough to accept another coat. If your snadpaper gets gummy it's telling you to try again tomorrow. Your sanding doesn't have to be complete or perfect. Sand falt areas with a fine grit paper and the spindly areas with #0000 steel wool and don't freak out if some areas don't get sanded. Be sure to follow the thinning recommendations. You can go to my website www.paulsDIY.solutions where you can print handy summary sheets to keep close by while working. best . . . paul

Hi Paul, amateur wood worker here... My wife and I are working on refinishing an old (not sure how old) solid wood (not sure what type of wood) dining table that we recently purchased from Facebook marketplace. Do you have any specific product/brand recommendations listed anywhere for what to use? We went to our local Ace Hardware and could not find any polymerized tung oil. We really enjoy your videos and have found them super helpful on this new journey for us! EDIT: I have been reading through your comments and replies on your website and found one where you recommend using Sutherland Welles polymerized tung oil. Our table is on the smaller side for a dining table, about 60x34 inches with a bulky trestle base. Do you think a 1 qt can will be enough to finish it? ALSO, do we need to mix it with "tung oil sealer" ? Thanks again! -Henis and Emilie Carcani

Hey Mark. Sounds like a great project. Nice wood. If you stock Maker's Mark I'll be over to help!! Here's my deal. Over the years I have tried a lot of pre-made combo finishes (hard wax oils included). A few I liked but my results were not consistant. I found out that manuafctuerers often will change their formulas and since they really don't tell you what's in their product it's a guess. Now I would spend weeks and sometimes months on a piece only to apply the finish and get poor results. I now only use finishes that I know the concoction up front (with percentages)! Secondly good hard wax oils can run up some pretty heffty costs ($7/oz). Okay I'm off my soapbox. Tung oil is easy and for a bar top it's an easy repair if needed. Another option is my combo finish "THE Best Clear Wood Combination Finish - Refinishing Furniture" (tung oil plus spar varnish). It's clear, durable, accentuates the grain and is liquid proof!! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vxRhqqAzuLo.html best . . . paul

Hey Anne. I can only imagine!! There is a tung oil called polymerized tung oil. This oil has been super-heated and alters it slightly chemically (still retains al the good parts though). It speeds up dry times dramatically (overnight here in the midwest vs days to weeks). Check it out online suppliers. Otherwise, only thing you can do is wait or bring it in by the AC unit. best . . . paul

My father repaired antiques and only used tung oil on any of the pieces I ever saw him refinish. Even the wooden lamp bases we turned from scraps of mahogany, walnut, and various woods, he would mix artist oil paint with mineral spirits to stain the pieces and then, after drying, would finish with several coats of tung oil. All those pieces turned out beautifully! I have a small unfinished alder table that I would like to stain and finish with tung oil but most of what I see on the internet advises not to put tung oil on a stain. I would be grateful for any suggestions.
@paulsDIYsolutions
@paulsDIYsolutions Год назад
Hey Whitney. It depends a lot on the type of wood. Any oil (oil baesd wood stain, tung oil, linseed oil, etc) works best when it is allowed to absorb into the woods open pores. Certain woods have tight, small or even closed pores. Oils finishes fill the pores (or most of the wood's pore space). Using oil based stain can fill the pores leaving no room for the tung oil. Woods that have very tight, small or closed pores (maple, cherry, walnut) won't handle both. You have a couple options. You can mix your stain with tung oil and then apply (experiment because this will change the intensity of the stain color) or you can use my combo finish after staining (my choice), "THE Best Clear Wood Combination Finish - Refinishing Furniture". It combines tung oil with tung oil based spar varnish. The oil is a penetrating finish so will fill whatever pore space might be available and the varnish is a durable, water-proof surface finish. Now the wood has the best of both worlds and it is a truely luxurius finish. Video link: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vxRhqqAzuLo.html best . . . paul

I could also use polyurethane but prefer just the tung oil alone. The chairs will also have cushions-- do I need to worry about the tung oil bleeding (even after curing).

@paulsDIYsolutions
@paulsDIYsolutions 2 месяца назад
@@user-vc3tf4gn8w There are basically two types pure tung oil. Regular and polymerized. Polymerized is treated withj high heat in a vacuum to change its strucrure chemically. Then a small amount of thinner is added to help it flow better. The advantage of polymerized tung oil is each coat dries within 24 hours. Pure tung oil, on the other hand, can take days to weeks for each coat to dry. You should not apply anothger coat until you can produce a white powder when sanding between coats. If you do before the previous coat dries you'll end up with a gummy mess. Both oils produce the same drop dead gorgeous surface. Finishing is about patience and pure tung oil can test the patience of the most patient. best . . . paul

Hi Paul, I have a question regarding the use of tung oil to finish stained wood. I recently bought a raw wood box from a fabric store, sanded it up to 400, and stained it a color I like. 1. Is tung oil an appropriate finish to use? My concern is that the tung oil won’t be able to penetrate the already filled pores and stained fibers so it won’t end up doing anything. 2. If it is appropriate, should I still be sanding in between applications of the oil? I’m afraid that it may remove the stain if I do. Thanks for all of your help so far!
@paulsDIYsolutions
@paulsDIYsolutions Год назад
Hey Honey. Question #1 seems like an appropriate question but let's go deeper. Stain is a solid pigment suspended in a liquid carrier. The iitial application does fill the pores so logically there is no room for oil. BUT the carrier evaporates leaving only the tiny dry pigments between the fibers and in the pores. The liquid is more than 90% of the stain resulting in still thirsty pores. So oil has a lot of room to soak into. Question # 2. Tung oil is callsified as a drying oil. Unlike most other oils they never completely dry. Each coat even the dramatically thinned coats that I recommend penetrates into the wood but also lays on top of the wood. I recommend sanding between coats as test for dryness. I also recommend using a 320-400 grit paper which is very close to a polishing grit. It barely scartches the surface. If you rae truely worried about cutting through the finish to the stain apply to the bottom of the box as well and test there for the first coat (or two). The reason for sanding oils is to assure the syrface is dry and remove any tiny dust particles that may have settled onto the surface while drying. Good legit questions though. best . . . paul P.S. Here's another option " THE Best Clear Wood Combination Finish - Refinishing Furniture" check it out (link below). Hi again Paul, I have another question. I am making a live edge table top with cedar with a tung oil finish. Since cedar is very soft, I am considering adding another coat (Polyurethane or Spar Varnish or so ...) on the top of the tung oil finish to increase the durability. Do you have any recommendations for what to apply / how to apply?

Personally I wouldn't. Tung oil finish has a texture, feel and appearance totally different from resin finishes. Putting a resin finish over oil would koinda defgeat the purpose of oiling wood.

Hello Paul, love the videos, thank you for putting the information out! Just one question, when I see you mixing the tung oil @ 5:50 it doesn't seem too thick, while pure polymerized tung oil I got is syrupy, so I'm curious how is that possible ? Did a get a wrong oil possibly ? Or one that got boiled in a different way ?
@paulsDIYsolutions
@paulsDIYsolutions 2 месяца назад
Hey Fisker. Without seeing it I can't comment. THe reason we thin the oil is so it penetrates faster and easier. Each coat becomes thicker and penetrates a little less and once the wood becomes saturated it dries as a surface coating. The stuiff is pretty thick out of the can. Not trying to avoid your question but I think you'll be fine. best . . . paul
