If you don't know... you don't know, and I didn't know. In all honesty I still probably don't know the best approach for the next time I need to tackle something like this situation, but this was how I approached a load of VFX on a sketch comedy series I directed the other summer with minimal resources to achieve what we needed to achieve. I was underwhelmed by any VFX work I'd seen on other similarly budgeted programs on the channel and was keen to try make ours feel as premium as they could in the limited circumstances.
