It is time to use up some of those block study blocks I've been accumulating! Today, I'll show you my method for designing a sampler quilt without a giant design wall. I do it all on paper with just a little math :)
I hope you grab some orphan blocks and make a few quilts! Next video, I'll be talking about my favorite ways to quilt sampler quilts to make the most of their unique look.

I’m glad you replaced the black. Makes more sense now. Now I have to check and see if I have enough orphan blocks to do this!

Thank you so much for admitting your reservations using the black fabric; it's not just me that almost allows my dodgy colour fabric decisions to stand lol

So simple it seems like a 'DOH' moment--GREAT idea and explanation. I've used this technique for furniture re-arranging but never thought to apply it to quilting...doh!

I loved this tutorial. It makes so much sense to lay it out on a grid. (I'm also glad you decided to change the black background - it looks so much better in white!) Thanks as always for sharing your talents!

You are an amazing teacher. And this process for orphan blocks is genious! I can't thank you enough. I just love binge watching your videos while I sew. I'm pretty sure I am watching more than I am sewing though... My "to do" list is getting a lot longer than my "Tah Dah" done list! Haha ha!

LOL, I hear your dog. How funny. You need a puppy cam so we can see him/her. I love the white. The black was striking, but it took away from the blocks and just didn't look like it belonged. This will give you tons of room for some fancy quilting.

I love this! At first I was thinking... a grid to put together some sampler blocks... but I kept watching and everything you did makes total sense to me! I have a few more blocks to create but when I do... this video will be my sherpa for that quilt. Thank you for creating this!

I really like the practical math you demonstrated with the squares and grid. I agree with you, the white filler spaces look better than the black/dark fabrics from the bundle. You will have some white spaces now to showcase some quilting designs.

I LOVE your videos Megan and you have me sooo excited about quilting again. I haven't been doing much quilting lately but recently inherited a HUGE stash of gorgeous fabrics and all kinds of supplies and was looking for inspiration on what I should jump back in with. I have definitely found the inspiration here and am planning on trying out these blocks in this sampler series. I am really drawn to scrappy style quilts and I think this will be the perfect way to play with a bunch of different fabrics and express my creativity!

Thanks SO much for this video!! The first pieced wall hanging with photos on cloth was put in a box in garage before I could finish it. I found it recently and mice had eaten several holes in it. Luckily not on photo squares. I had graphed it out several times and was stumped. I am going to fix this tonight!

Fantastic & very much appreciated! BUT the block you labeled 10x10 bc it is below a 10x10 is actually 10x12 & there are 2" missing on either side of that 10x10. I haven't done the math on your sample, that one just caught my mathy brain. I'm in a fb group doing my 2nd asymmetrical quilt this year so I've been learning how the admin designs these BOM & spacers into a quilt for us. You have now made this amazingly easy & I shared this video in that group plus 2 more. I'm fairly new to your channel (have only watched 5 or 6 videos) and I'm really liking how your simplify things! PS have you considered making designed spacers or patterned fabric matching a block instead of all a single background color? PSS Dutchman's Puzzle is my favorite & also orange! Many Blessings from Deborah in West Virginia!
