How to avoid transitions when installing laminate or vinyl plank by installing planks backwards

In this video I share how to install your laminate or vinyl plank backwards. This means that you will install the female end into the male end instead of the proper way which is the male into the female. This is a little harder to install this way but with my methods you can accomplish this fairly easily.
It is also going to help you avoid using transitions because, there are rooms you may have to work backwards into or you will need to add a transition in the doorway and turn the floor 180 degrees to get the locking system pointed in the correct direction.

Joe Letendre is so so helpful and knowledgeable. Of the about dozen different hosts for LVP flooring, I like Joe's the best for completeness of subject matter. He has a Laminate University which looks like it would be a great help to figure out the difficult parts of planning to execution. Joe's methods are quite intuitive without having to read a tap measure every cut. I highly recommend him. Thanks, Joe.

I used the working backwards method to work thru a pantry doorway. I put the plank in place and slid it where the seam was on the back side of doorway. Then worked the vinyl planks in both directions away from doorway. It worked great and looked great. Thanks for the tip!

Did my first project after watching some of your videos - my hallway with no less than 6 room thresholds and a set of stairs to contend with. Joe a trick I used yesterday. sliding flooring through the door frame. I used multi-tool for cutting door jams. Trying to get a piece under door frame was tight. So I recut but this time used 1 piece flooring and two layers of underlayment. That extra wiggle room made it easy.

Thanks. I am getting ready to install Pergo outlast+ on slab in kitchen that flows into office and utilility room without transitions and need to work backward in some areas. Home depot said it can`t be done. Even called Pergo and they could not answer. You have the best info I have found. I also heard to use a piece of felt paper under the whole joint as it has a tendancy to pinch vapor barrier in joint when working in reverse.

Thanks for this video. When I did our wood floors on the 2nd floor they make a piece you can slide into the wood that then reverses direction. It's super great. I wasn't sure about vinyl planks so this is a good thing. I'm doing our basement in the new few days. And I most definitely have to go backwards in MANY cut ins from the normal main floor... IE: Recessed areas.

Good idea to use an offcut piece that you can pound with the block or mallet and avoid damaging the boards. I will definitely use that on an upcoming project. Thanks!

Thank you for this. I am not handy in any way, but I am putting in laminate floors throughout my parents’ house as they are trying to sell it (and move in with me). To save them money, I am doing the installation by watching videos. I installed the larger room left to right as directed, but now that I am going into the hallway and bedrooms, I see I have to install in reverse. I’m hoping I can put these tips to good use. Seems the key piece is making a block out of a remnant piece of laminate to tap. I start my backwards work tomorrow. Wish me luck.

Is it possible to do a direction change from a room to hallway without a transition strip? I noticed you used glue on one edge in this video, but what about laying planks perpendicular to the row to start a hallway? The tongue and groove fit together but don't actually snap and hold.

I am surprised they don't make a Male or Female same end transition boards to transition from front installation to backward installation. Would make life so easy. You would get to the point where you have to switch to backwards installation, you would simply install one row of same edge plank, and continue just like nothing would happen...

Awesome videos! If you're working from a larger room toward a hallway with door frames like 5:40 and you need to slide under the frames, do you have to build the entire project backwards? Or is it better to start in the hallway at the door frames? Thanks!

No. You would need to have a joint at the spindles on every step unless you remove and reinstall the spindles.

So I just finished one bedroom, came out into the hall and started thinking, how the heck am I gonna start the adjacent bedroom and have the plank meet up with the common hall. There's no way I could measure the second bedroom and try to rip that first row of plank and then meet up perfectly with the hall, that's just not gonna happen. Just about to research transitions for the all the rooms, and ran across this....So you CAN work backwards! Thanks man.

I like quick step and Mohawk laminate. It has lots of patterns and is a very durable laminate. The 12mm is the way to go.
