That was the absolute best explanation of the back button focus method I have ever seen. Thank you so much 😊

Glad it was helpful! It's not made for every type of photography out there, some really do benefit from autofocus, but for me, and for what I do (Street and documentary photography) Back button focusing and AF-L are the way to go. Have you had a chance to try these settings yourself? I'm curious to hear your experiences if you have any. Thank you very much for watching and for taking the time to share a comment as well! Cheers 😁✨

I mostly shoot with AF-S. I use a fair bit a manual lenses, and for those I need to rely on focus peaking, so when I use an autofocused lens, the peaking just ruins the image and the exposure that I see on the screen, and I don't want to go in the menus to remove any focus assist each time I switch lenses. So what I'm doing is basically the same as you, except instead of pressing the AF-L button, I half press the shutter. I almost never use AF-C because I can't do this anymore in this mode (and it's kinda bad on my X-T1 anyway)

Good to hear what methods other people use as well! I like to independently control the focusing and shutter button, it's great for a sequence of shots too, I find that the camera gets out of the way and I can do a burst of shots without it slowing me down. AF-S is great for when I try to do portraits and use the eye tracking on the newer Fuji cameras, so there's a time and place for everything! Thanks for watching! and for taking the time to share your thoughts as well! And for being a member of this very small community of like-minded photographers and artists! I appreciate it! 🙏🏼😁

I just zone focus on all lenses and shoot in manual like I do on my film cameras. I set my focus range on the lens on vintage lenses or I set the focus zones in camera if I use a Fuji lens.

I can't guarantee it will be the best approach for you, but maybe you'll learn something new and maybe you'll approach your photography from a different perspective after trying the AF-L method!

Why haven’t I realized this before!? Lost my mind on the field when the camera stars rethinking its focus every time I take a shot.
@Jorge-Perez
@Jorge-Perez 2 года назад
Yeah, It drives me crazy too! On newer cameras like the X100V, there is an option called "focus check", when you disable it, it allows the cameras to instantly take a shot, without checking if the frame is in focus. But with older cameras, the only way to bypass the focus check is to put the focus selector on manual mode and use the AF-L button. So forget about autofocus or setting the dial to "Single Or Continuous". I hope the video was helpful, thank you very much for watching and for taking the time to share a comment as well! I appreciate it 🙏🏼😁

Forgive me if this is a simple question. I'm a longtime shooter but getting my first Fuji body today, the x-e1. Using this method, you're using back button focus to acquire and then lock focus, right? It doesn't implement any sort of tracking or anything like that. It's quite literally "focus here, period." Am I right about that? So if you or your subject moves, the camera will stay focused at that spatial depth? Another subjecting walking through- for instance - will enter the focal plane and be in focus until they exit that space? Likewise, if you move... Does the focal depth move with you? Meaning, I could focus on a distant building in the mid frame of my scene, lock focus, and the I'm essentially zone focused if I move around- with my focal plane stretching forward to move along with me? Sorry for ramble question. You seem like a good person to ask is all.

Nice video. I can't really understand why the AF-L button works on Manual mode, and not AF-S
@Jorge-Perez
@Jorge-Perez 2 года назад
No idea, perhaps they consider it manual focus because you're telling the camera where to focus on? (although it's doing it automatically?) But I find it very useful and the best way to shoot street. Are you getting one, or already have a fuji camera? Thanks for watching and for taking the time to share a comment as well! Cheers 😁🙌🏼

@@Jorge-Perez I own a X100F and I was considering a XPro-1, but I'm delaying that until the X100 dies or I have squeezed the most of it. Yes, that BBF is super useful and I actually I use it more to set a zone focus than for AF, so it actually works fine for me, once I discovered how to use it. But it was a strange decision from Fuji, as most cameras that I used before, the AF-L button is working when on AF-S and manual is just... manual.
@dummybert
@dummybert 2 года назад
 @Jorge Perez Btw, what's your take on XPro-2 and XPro-3 compared to the XPro-1? I know I eventually will get one, and I'm not sure if to get the XPro-1 straight away, or wait for the next iteration and see XPro-3 prices drop in the second hand market. I've heard many people praising the XPro-1 sensor as unique and more film-like, so I wonder if that image feeling is lost on XPro-2 or XPro-3.
@Jorge-Perez
@Jorge-Perez 2 года назад
The reason why I got the X-Pro1 is that it was the oldest and cheapest of the X-Pro series. I wanted to show people that you can still get great results with a camera like that. However, I think the X-Pro2 is probably the most balanced in terms of quality and cost. You could hunt it down and get it at a reasonable price and be content knowing that it will last you another 10 years. The X-Pro3 still has the flagship price, it's the latest camera today, but will be outdated by a new model eventually, If you're waiting a while, then you could potentially get it at a great price in 2-3 years from today, depends on how long you want to wait. There's something important to consider, and that is the sensor, If you've watched my review, then you know that I really believe that the first xtrans sensor has a magic sauce that I believe it's lost on the newer cameras. The newer the camera is, the more clean and pristine the image is, that might be something you want, or not. The point is, that I believe it will continue with the xpro4 and xpro5, cleaner and cleaner and more digital look with time. So an X-Pro2 might be just at the edge of balancing a clean digital look and still some of the film aesthetic and aspects of the xpro1 You already have a camera, so there's no rush per se, but I would normally advise getting the thing that you want today. It's not about FOMO or gas, it's about getting started and getting you going right now. Hopefully, that gives you a bit of context of why I review the gear that I do, and why I recommend it to others out there. Hope that helps man, keep me posted! Cheers 🙌🏼✨

@@Jorge-Perez Thanks for taking the time and interest to answer. It really feels of having some feeling of community here on YT. Yes, I already own more than I could dream (X100F, Z6, two Nikon F, and a lovely Rolleiflex) so there is no “need” for a camera. I can take the Z6 when I’m more committed to shooting, and the X100 as an everyday camera to see what happens, whether I shoot or not, or if I spend the whole day walking and I don’t want to carry heavy equipment. But there’s a price to pay for the compactness of the X100, and (for me) it’s the smaller viewfinder and ergonomics. That’s why I though that the XPro could help as its OVF has wider coverage and lower magnification. I like that the XPro falls in the middle ground between the X100 and Z6, too. For example, a couple of weeks ago I followed a demonstration and tried to take some pictures in a photojournalism style. Some people got uncomfortable being shot with the Z6 + tele. If I had the X100, they would be puzzled thinking “what is this tourist doing with his point and shoot?”. I think the XPro can do a good job in this kind of situations. To be honest, the XPro1 is so cheap nowadays, that I know I will buy it, because it will give me enough joy for the money (and that’s all that matters). I don’t even need to spend on lenses as I can adapt my F-mount and M-mount lenses on it, so I can start rock n’ rolling for about 250€. Still, I can buy (if I want) one extra compact prime X-mount and, having a solid equipment in my hands for years, wait for new XPros to be released and second hand prices of older models to drop. I will keep you updated. Keep the great job with the channel Jorge. Hasta pronto!

Hello. Can you please tell me how focus picking works after upgrading to version 3.82? Were there any changes or did they leave it without color ? If you compare it to the x-t1, is the focus picking worse or are they similar? Is the screen quality the same?
@Jorge-Perez
@Jorge-Perez 2 года назад
Hi Elias, peaking remains somewhat the same. The menu looks something like this: MF Assist -> Standard ->Focus Peak Highlight -> Low -> High That's pretty much it, no colour change or other different options for Focus Peaking. It seems like you can choose colours with the X-T1, however, I would not change a rangefinder-style viewfinder for the regular type of location and viewfinder of the X-t1, that's just my personal preference. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching and taking the time to share a comment as well! And good luck! 🙌🏼✨

Well Jorge know this, you can control stuff and systems (which include self-development), but not human beings, so, don't extend your "control paradigm" to include humans, cos that will come down to manipulation, and will result in failure
@Jorge-Perez
@Jorge-Perez 2 года назад
Agreed, I mentioned this in my xpro1 review and my street photography philosophy video, but long story short, since we can't control anything about the subjects, the environment, the weather, the lighting, might as well put some effort and control your settings, which is the only thing you can control. @@Jorge-Perez Main and only Fuji prime lens is the 18mm f2. It came with my Xpro 1. My shooting style is mostly to point and shoot. Thinking is for later. At least that’s the way my brain works so zone focus works best for me. I rarely miss focus these days. The manual lens I use on the Xpro is my M mount voigtlander Ultron 28mm f2. It’s nearly a 40mm equivalent on the Xpro which is great as 40mm is my fav focal length, plus it’s nice to us the lens more often. I got it for my Minolta CLE but as I love 40mm, I alway use my 40mm Minolta rokkor on it.
