I also recommend How To Haunt A House because in that one they do spend it all in a pretty mansion but Goofy dies right at the beginning and spends the whole cartoon as a ghost having to figure out how to haunt his new mansion and the ending with him and the quacker he's trying to scare is somewhat dark and really funny.

One of my favorites from Mickey’s House of Villains. I don’t find it that dark though since the narrator even explains right from the start Goofy being a ghost is only temporary. The darker toons from the villain takeover, “Donald’s Halloween Scare” and “Hansel and Gretel” were really good too. But probably not Dark Toons worthy.
@PaulW_ftPAULK
@PaulW_ftPAULK Год назад
@@Depth217 I love House of Villains! My rational for it is that even when temporary they still had Goofy get run over and the ending is literally Donald getting run over and he chases Donald right off a cliff. Hansel and Gretel was brilliantly animated but didn't really add anything to the darkness of the original story. Donald's Halloween Haunt did scare me as a kid but it only has the scene where the triplets are fake zombies. Maybe the entire thing could be analyzed as a Dark Toon of sorts, thought.

I always thought when Goofy goes to hit the weasel with the blackjack that he’s just so inept that he knocked himself out, not that he knocked out the weasel but ended up in the alley himself. Also, you know the writers toyed with the idea of instead of using goof balls they “slip him a Mickey”.

One of my favorite examples of putting Goofy in adult situations is when he's still allowed to be, well, Goofy! Still absent minded, still dorky, but dealing with more mature themes. There's this, there's Father's Day Off (Goofy's wife cheating on him with the deliverymen is funny enough, but him just assuming they're friendly is hilarious), there's Teachers are People too, even A Goofy Movie can be thrown in the mix. It's like watching SpongeBob, or Homer, or Soos. That contrast between innocence and cynicism is the real thing that makes this fun

One of my favorite jokes about the Goofy cartoons and how violent they were, there is an episode of House of Mouse (I remember you did a Disneycember of it one time) where Max was trying to convince Goofy to get him a car, and shenanigans ensue convincing Goofy that Max isn’t responsible. In response, Mickey and Friends pull out a compilation of “Goofy’s younger days driving” with the old Goofy shorts where he’s exhibiting road rage and getting into accidents and basically calling out Goofy for not being a responsible driver himself, and I think that’s a funny way to bring in the older stuff as almost a “Kids, here is an example of what NOT to do.”

I feel like because Goofy isn’t reacting to the horrible things happening to him, it doesn’t come off as dark as “Donald held at gunpoint” or “Mickey about to be dissected.” Of course, this is still a great short and I feel like I missed it due to the amount of over the top violence that was on display. Still, I know I got a couple laughs watching this and Goofy is usually a great lead when he gets his chance in the spotlight.

Little that he knows that the mansion is inhabited by leprechauns who are convinced that Porky is there to steal their pot of gold. Porky ends up wearing a pair of enchanted dancing shoes.

Super happy to see this is back! I know this is a quite recent cartoon but I would recommend u checking out the Amazing world of Gumball episode - "The puppets". Apparently the puppets were made and designed by the same guys who made "Don't hug me I'm scared" a psychological, horror series.

The 1940s-mid 50s was the golden age of film noir. And so many other studios tried to cash in on it! Heck Universal studios even made some noir/horror films; one of which even had Bela Legosi as a crime boss! But I can't remember the title of it...

There was this one Donald Duck cartoon called "Donald's Camera" from 1941. It's mostly standard, although it opens up with Donald window shopping for a camera, where a sign in the window reads "shoot nature with a camera instead of a gun", in a shop right next to a sporting goods shop with a shotgun on display along with stuffed woodland creatures all having terrified faces. Throughout the short, a bird keeps on pestering Donald while threatening to destroy the camera. The ending was later censored (kind of hilariously) with a iris wipe to black just before Donald goes ballistic, turning into a literal electric flash and rushing for the shotgun in the opening then going after the bird. As a kid I hated that ending for that dark turn, despite the cartoon's average mean spiritness for a Donald short. It's up there along with Donald pulling out his gun at the end of "Magician Mickey", or maybe more so even.

OK, now that you've covered a detective-themed cartoon, go for the Daffy Duck short "The Great Piggy Bank Robbery" The payoff of the whole scenario is kinda hohum but the Duck Twacy sequence has a blazingly surreal climax. You'll never see Sylvester the same way again.

The Song of the Birds: Two cartoons of this title, one a 1935 cartoon directed by Max Fleischer, and a 1948 remake featuring the character Little Audrey. Basic premise is a child shoots a baby bird with a toy gun, seemingly killing it. The parents of the bird grieve and hold a funeral. Might be interesting to compare the two versions. Peace on Earth: An elderly squirrel tells his grandchildren the story of how humans went extinct due to their love of war. Also has a remake called "Good Will to Men." The Pincushion Man (also called Balloon Land): a strangely phallic shaped pincushion creature wants to murder living people made of balloons (and he does). Animaniacs 2020 episode "Good Warner Hunting": A hunter hunts down the characters from the old show. Depictions of the characters with their heads mounted on the wall is not only dark but especially disturbing to old fans of the original (even if they are totally fine in the end). Education for Death: Disney WWII propaganda cartoon about how Hitler's rule will lead the children of Germany to their deaths. The Old Army Game: Donald Duck cartoon where Donald ends up in a situation where he is far too enthusiastic to commit suicide.

I remember a really dark moment in a Disney cartoon, where Donald Duck is the sheriff of a wild west town that is visited by the bandit Pete. Pete attacking the town is a moment used twice in both Goofy Two Gun and The Lone Chipmonks featuring Chip and Dale. This one is rather unique as it depicts Pete on a murder spree while robbing the bank and ends with Donald getting shot (off screen). It was used an intro to the Goofy Two Gun cartoon if I remember correctly, making me suspect there are two versions of Goofy Two Gun.

It actually reminds me of an italian Goofy comic series (Pippo Reporter), it takes place in the 30s, where Goofy is accidentally hired as a reporter for the Morning Blot when he tried to order some pizza, but his boss is secretly a crime lord, and basically Goofy unknowingly ruins his evil plans by actually doing his job, this was a hilarious series ^^

This one did run here in Germany when I was a kid in the 90s, they actually showed a bunch of cartoons they wouldn't show today anymore, like the ones with Donald in the Army (except for when he joined the you-know-what army, that one obviously never made it here X3) and stuff like that, but this one I saw more than once back then, and I totally loved it. Big Film Noir fan to this day, maybe that came from this cartoon.

I highly recommend “The Super Powers Team: Galactic Guardians: Episode 4: The Fear.” Airing in early October 1985 and written by Alan Burnett (DCAU, anyone?), this episode has the Scarecrow discovering that Batman (voiced by the late great Adam West) is afraid of a certain place called Crime Alley. This episode shows Batman in a way not yet seen at the time: truly vulnerable. It also features the first ever onscreen depiction of Batman’s origins, from his parents to Joe Chill. This is considered the darkest and most controversial Super Friends episode ever. I cannot recommend it enough.

@@gersubdenis6724 And while it's featured among Adult Swims cartoons nowadays, back then it was originally shown on Cartoon Network, for kids to watch. But still, it would just be nice to see it covered.

If I had to suggest a cartoon to look into, “The Cuphead Show” on Netflix has some pretty good episdoes - particularly “Ghosts Ain't Real”. Whole it’s not super dark in tone, it pays a ton of homage to cartoons you’ve already featured in this series, so I figured it would be a fun one to look into.

For a future installment, there are two episodes of 'Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends' that I'd recommend: 1. "BLOOOOOOOOO!" (Gives off kind of a 'Lonesome Ghosts' vibe with the main plot of the main group thinking that there's a "Cannibal ghost" in the House, and a surprisingly quite scary and intense subplot with Frankie being locked out of the House and trying to get back in, all the while a sinister- looking shadowy figure is stalking her and getting steadily closer). 2. "Nightmare on Wilson Way" (Awesome Halloween special, with the "Zombies" looking pretty freaking scary). They both end on cheerful, light- hearted notes, but the path up to that point is pretty freaking scary for a CN show in both cases.

I've actually got three suggestions here. The first is "Hyde and Hare", a Looney Tunes short that has Bugs get adopted by Dr. Jekyll. He then proceeds to spend the whole episode trying to prevent himself from being done in by Mr. Hyde, to hilarious results. The second is "Dr. Jerkyl's Hide", in which Sylvester the Cat gets ahold of Dr. Jekyll's potion and gets his revenge on a dog that's been tormenting him (I actually found this one while trying to remember the Bugs Bunny one). The last one is the Ed, Edd, and Eddy short "One + One = Ed". The Ed boys break the fabric of reality and realize they're in a cartoon world, does anything else need to be said?

I first saw it in the late 1970s when Disney used their cartoon library to promote whatever movies they were about to release or re-release in theaters. Disney essentially had 3 options in those pre-cable days: WONDERFUL WORLD OF DISNEY (NBC), THE MICKEY MOUSE CLUB (syndicated Gen-X version with Kim Fields and Lisa Whelchel as Mouseketeers), and syndicated hourlong specials. HOW TO BE A DETECTIVE was either part of a syndicated special promoting the release of THE NORTH AVENUE IRREGULARS (1979) or an episode of MMC, since Mouseketeers usually co-hosted the syndicated specials with one of the stars of the upcoming movie. Regarding the Weasel, it seemed obvious to me even as a child, that there were multiple identical weasels and not a single weasel working multiple jobs, much like there were usually multiple Goofys in his cartoons.

While on the subject of "The Flintstones", one episode you should do is this one called "A Haunted House Is Not a Home". Here, Fred is all set to receive an inheritance from his not-all-there uncle, who is now deceased. The catch, however, is that Fred must spend the night in his uncle's creepy mansion in order to receive the inheritance, and if anything happens to him, the inheritance will be reverted to his uncle's staff, including his butler, his chef and his gardener. As you might expect, the staff tries to get Fred (and by extension, Barney, who agrees to spend the night with his best friend) killed so they can claim the inheritance for themselves. But the kicker is that Fred's uncle never died; he had faked his death as a prank, which his staff was apparently in on all along.

Have you done “Night Of The Headless Horseman”? It was the very first CGI movie ever made, so it’s a museum piece if nothing else. And I love love love love LOVE the ending they came up with for this particular version of “The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow”! If you haven’t seen it--GO SEE IT! It’s available to see for free on RU-vid (as well as the making-of documentary). PLEASE?!?!? The legendary Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker, The Joker, etc) is one of the characters!
