"Ghoul Friend" is one of the season 1 shorts of the new Mickey Mouse (2013) series created by Paul Rudish for the Disney Channel and Disney.com. It premiered in the US as the tenth short on October 4, 2013, during the Disney Channel's "Monstober" event.

I remember that Mickey was actually less popular in his day than Donald was, and the artists at the studio liked doing the Donald cartoons more. It was Walt who really liked Mickey. Also, the film historian Leonard Moulton said that parents at the time we’re pushing back against the earlier Mickey cartoons where he acted mean. This led to the invention of Donald, who is supposed to act that way.

Ironically, Donald's modern interpretation in the new Ducktales has him as the most responsible person out of the family. The only thing hinting at his old ways is his overprotective temper when any harm threatens his nephews.

Donald was usually trying to be responsible in his shorts, he would be doing something mundane or maybe even inherently responsible, and then that action would either directly or indirectly inconvenience someone or turn whacky and the results push him to snap, like with the kids sure he was always the childish irresponsible uncle who would be mean to them for a laugh, but in most of his cartoons he'd do stuff like just try and make some pancake batter or decorate his Christmas tree, and then get punished for it.

I remember in a crossover (?) cartoon around Christmas time Donald was a park ranger trying to plant more trees but Chip and Dale kept stealing the nuts cus its winter, they need food for hibernation and the like. He didn't start off mean. Theres another one (i had a vhs Disney Xmas collection thing. Started with prince and the pauper and there were twelve shorts and i remember most of them now) where Donald is ice skating but the triplets wanna have a snowball fight and i think he gets caught in the crossfire. It turns into full out war, i remember the scenes so well and Donald was kinda pushed it the aggressive role cus he wants to relax but the kids wont let him. I always liked Donald more than mickey and I suppose its because I could relate more to Donald.

Because censorship can be part of a magical world of hypocrisy, double-standards, and cognitive dissonance (but can be unintentionally fun depending on the kind of media and what's being censored, such as shows like Animaniacs being an example of playing around how far the envelope can be pushed).

I went into a Disney store at the mall and this episode randomly started playing on the TV screen in the little kid area. The children around at the time seemed genuinely unphased but I was HORRIFIED. Thank you for reminding me how freaky it actually is 😂

I watched one with my nephew on Disney+. There's a scene where Mickey wants to finish Bambi but another character straight up says his mother dies and Mick immediately gives up because of the spoiler. I was laughing for a minute for how unexpected and kinda twisted it was.

For me, this Mickey mouse's look is the definitive. not only is the cartoon itself fun to watch, but Mickey mouse himself is actually fun to watch. He's not the world's most boring character anymore, he's this actual character. The look of the show and the characters themselves actually acting the way I expect them to it's gold.

As someone who follows a lot of Disney fandom more than anything else, I know a lot of people really don't like these shorts because of the character designs, but I do enjoy them. Definitely one of the best moves they could have made with Mickey and the gang. I just wish that they would also do more with the Goofy How To shorts too.

"Zombie Goofy" is a great concept for a Dark Toon, even before seeing it. Regular Goofy is in severe need of brains already, but zombifying him takes it to a whole new level. Even without that, the cartoon has so much going for it, and I agree with Doug that this is already a Dark Toon classic.

May not be exactly dark, but try Loony Tunes “Fish Tales,” and Merry Melodies “Pigs is Pigs” for nightmare sequences. And 1939 MGM “Peace on Earth,” where the old squirrel tells his grandchildren about how men went extinct because of war.

I'm glad to see someone else mention Peace on Earth. I looked it up on Wikipedia after thinking about it again, and noticed that in 1939 it was nominated for an Academy Award in 'Short Subjects', but the Disney rendition of the Ugly Duckling won it instead. I wish more people knew about that because it has such a great balance of things being sweet and cute with 'Oh'. moments. Like when you realize all the houses are made out of helmets.

Even though its not 'dark', so much, I'd love if he looked into Disney's 'The Lonesome Ghosts'. It was made in 1937 and came out just 3 actual days after Snow White. Mickey, Donald and Goofy are a ghostbusting team and some ghosts in a haunted house call them to come 'investigate' just because they get bored and wanna mess with them. The animation and backgrounds are really great, and you really kind of feel the coldness of the snowy old house.

There's a longer (20 minutes maybe) Halloween episode with Mickey trying to scare the duck and mouse nephews with scary stories. The last story involves Huey, Dewey, and Louie getting murdered by a witch.

@@Fritter_Films But Marley's purpose is to be scary. He scares Scrooge telling him about his future after his death, which helps him on becoming good after the spirits visit him. And I don't care it's a kid's version of the tale, since it's not bad to scare children a bit. This story is a ghost story, so it should be a tiny bit scary. And having Goofy as Marley does not make sense.

This scared the absolute shit out of me when I was a kid especially the running mad part. I guess what it is, is that you know you usually see goofy as this friendly face but to seem him like this is terrifying. And it still unnerves me to this day.

Mickey isn't boring. Mickey is awesome. He's upbeat, he loves Minnie, can be a little bit mischievous sometimes, and is a goody-two-shoes. It's not the character's fault you just need a well-written plot. Their are many ways you can have an ordinary goody goody be funny. For example, he can be the voice of reason to more nutty characters. According to Critic logic, you have to be stupid or a jerk to be funny he called Kim Possible boring.

Something worth noticying is how the entire sequence of the car breaking down and before Goofy appears, there is absolutely NO SOUNDTRACK. Its entirely silent save for sound effects, and that REALLY made the scene extra creepy.

Honestly the later Modern Mickey Mouse episode "House of Tomorrow" and "Just the four of us." Are WAY more terrifying. House of Tomorrow only has ONE horrorifying part, but was truly spine chilling. And the only thing you need to know about "Just the four of us." Is that its makes mickey mouse a horror movie, no joke.

Suggestion: The Adventures of Lolo the Penguin (USSR, Japan, 1986) made me crying every time i saw it. Its very colorful and well animated( for example pinguin's blood in water 10/10 realistic), characters are cute and lowly, but this "pies of art" is scary, depressive and sometimes cruel.

Rugrats certainly had many good dark and creepy episodes like The Last Babysitter, Real or Robots and Under Chuckie's Bed. I always saw Under Chuckie's Bed as one of the scariest if not the darkest as we see a kid (in one of Angelica's made up stories) get dragged under the bed and eaten by an unseen monster and we get a couple of freaky shots of "the monster" under Chuckie's bed as well.

What i like about these shorts is that a lot of them take place in various countries around the world and feature the characters speaking the native language of the country. So the one In France features characters speaking French, or the one in Mexico has everyone speaking Spanish. And all with no subtitles! So you either have to know the language to understand what they say, or, like me, you have to read their movements and actions to get the context of the scene, which I think they pull off very well!

Check out "Play Safe", a 1936 Fleischer cartoon made to scare kids straight about Train Safety. It's full to the brim with weird and unsettlingly strange colorful imagary and sports a grim warning for the kiddies to boot. It's a perfect Dark Toons candidate.
