To any straight men who do want to enter the sex ed sector, and maybe attend a few events, what I would say is be prepared for two reactions. One is the novelty of men being there at all, especially straight men, and the inevitable questions about how you got into sex ed (that don't get asked of women, btw), and two that you will soon realise there's a lot of content that is based around some sort of lived experience and you shouldn't be scared to share your own lived experience of sex ed or sexual health - most will find it very interesting indeed.

I'd say if you're not ready to share lived experiences, your probably not up to sex education in the modern era. It focuses so heavily on erasing the shame and stigma and that means talking about our own experiences openly.

It's interesting as a white Cis middle aged man who is and has been a Relationship and Sex Educator for a number of years now, listening to this video was really interesting. As a cis Male I often am asked about my route in to sex ed as if I'm some kind of weirdo. (And I take the point about 'people like me have created some of the problems). But for me it was just a natural progression from youth work. The question about lived experience is curious. In the classroom where most of my education now happens young people don't want to think about others having sex. What they want is clear, confident teaching where they can express themselves while feeling safe and able to ask anything. A sex educator just needs to be good at what they do. Have the ability to engage learners and be knowledgeable. Talking about yourself is difficult because it can come across as judgy(if that's a word) or bragging. We try to talk always in the 3rd person and explain why we wouldn't answer personal questions. This was meant to be a snappy response- sorry.

Hi Hannah, for me, a 15 year old boy who is developing a real interest in sex ed, particularly the clinical and therapy side, I cannot tell you how helpful and informative videos like these are. Lord only knows I don't get much interest in this topic from my peers in school or even my school itself and I'm just so grateful that you are providing this information! Thank you!

Resourceful video! I have been a sexual health educator for over 12 years, teaching in the classroom to a wide range of ages and lecturing undergraduate students in the USA. I have a Master's degree in Public Health but focused my career on comprehensive sex ed, teen pregnancy prevention, and HIV/AIDS education which are all in the public health sphere. After becoming a parent, I realized that although I was very comfortable talking about sex and sexuality with my children in an age-appropriate way, MANY parents are not as comfortable talking about sex with their kids. I encourage parents to be their child's primary sexual health educator and provide parents with tips and tools in order to build their confidence in having 'the talk' with their child at any age. Keep up the great work Hannah! I hope this video inspires individuals to get into the sex education field!!

It's not talked a lot about in schools actually because of the affects of article 28 despite it being repealed, so experiences can vary but it's certainly better than the US because while doing research about sex ed in America I found that the information doesn't need to be medically correct which horrified me

You have no idea how much this video helps me out! I'm a high school student in the US who is nearing college age. I've always had an interest in sex ed/reproductive health and the like as a career, but just don't know where to start. You really gave some amazing info/advice that really broadened my horizons. The end of this month I’m starting 2 undergrad uni courses in Australia on sexuality- “history of sex and sexuality” and “sexology in a contemporary context”. I went from a graduate in English Literature to an Education and Wellbeing Specialist at Brook to an Relationship and Sex Education Coordinator in a secondary school. RSE opens a lot of doors! I literally just sat down at me after finishing a shift at the broth (I'm in nz so I'm playing by the rules) and hearing you thank s3x workers for educating really just made my night! Top tip for university students is to check if your university has any sort of sex ed campaign or project. At York St John we have a healthy relationships project that I’m actually a researcher for. The job has allowed me to attend training events, campaign events, and so many more awesome things. Great for my CV, really enjoyable, and gave me an chance to network with people from abuse support charities, LGBTQ+ service providers, social workers, academics, sexual health workers... it’s amazing

I work in graduate admission for university in the US and my biggest advice for anyone. but especially US-based sex educators is to look at state licensure boards for more information on education requirements, content restrictions etc. They can be great resources for the first steps. Additionally, my favorite advice is to check out job listings for your dream job and see what their requirements are. If postings for your dream job all ask for a certain certification, that might be a good place to start!

Just a quick bit of extra details about the COVID-19 delay on relationships and sex education in English schools. The subject is still statutory in all schools in England from September 2020. But due to COVID school have a "soft start" which means they would not fail an inspection on it this Autumn or in the Spring. But from the start of the summer term they would be in trouble for not having a fully up and running RSE programme under the new guidance. So yes it is a little delayed but basically just a bit of breathing room. Schools will still be looking to start up RSE sessions this Autumn, there is a big drive on the mental health side of RSE.

Here is Australia there are hard qualifications and registrations required to be an accredited sex educator. This involves completing a Graduate Diploma or Masters of Sexology with required training etc. You must also pay a membership fee with a sexological association. It is highly regulated and for good reason. In the UK, the equivalent is CORST. I would recommend an undergraduate degree in education, public health or counselling if this career is wanted to be progressed and then specialising in sexology :)

For anyone in Australia this is the info I know from my research According to societyaustraliansexologists.org.au to become an accredited sex educator they suggest one of the following Masters: Cutin university - Masters of sexology University of Sydney- Masters of Medicine (Sexual and Reproductive Health) Psychosexual Therapy pathway University of Sydney- Masters of Science in Medicine (Sexual and Reproductive Health) Psychosexual Therapy pathway Honestley this looks to be it if you want accreditation. Both of the Sydney ones also have other pathways but those don't necessarily lead to accreditation if thats what you are looking for. If you don't care too much for accreditation then I'd suggest just looking into courses related to your field and seeing if there are any related things in it. I personally am wanting to do a bachelor of health sciences or a bachelor of health sciences/bachelor of arts and then go on to do one of the before mentioned Masters.

I'm thinking of becoming a sexologist (thanks to you, Lindsey Doe and Shan Boodram among others) but i'm not entirely sure how to get there because there is no university diploma for it in France (i just have to do a masters in psychology), so your resources are going to come in very handy ♥

I’m in Australia and am studying sexology at Curtin University, WA. It is aaaamazing 😍 We have the Australian Society of Sexologists and that covers sex educators and therapists, with requirements for accreditation. Anyone can call themselves a sexologist but much more ethical to have proper training under your belt i think :)

Thankyou for giving us sex workers a shout out! While not all of us do much education, it often ends up as part of the job one way or another. Maybe Joe blow (pun not intended) is having trouble getting it up during a session. As a sex. Worker we can choose to soothe the embarrassment in many ways. And often that involves some form of education. "hey, it's all good. You'd be surprised how often this happens. Let's try - insert something different-" and that something could be something enjoyable that doesn't require erection, or it could help Joe relax enough he manages to get that erection after all. Intentionally or not, the sex worker in that situation may have taught Joe : Erectile dysfunction is common and not unusual. An erection is required for sexy fun times. Relaxation and distraction can help an erection. There's no shame in failing to get it up! Personally I like to work with sex therapists to help people improve their sex lives. That means education can be central to many appointments!

There are so many of these routes that I would want to go down, the sex content creator is one, sex education in schools, and psychology and therapy. The only real issue for two of those I already have a degree but it is a creative one. However I am thinking of getting a PGCE for teaching. So that may be a step towards it. Do you think because sex education is slowly becoming compulsory in schools they may change the law in the U.K about having a qualification?

Hi Laura, I'm a qualified Religious Studies teacher and currently Head of PSHE and RS. It would be brilliant if universities offered a PGCE in PSHE and/or RSE, with the new compulsory guidance set by the DfE it certainly suggests this may happen but, I'd suspect it's a long way off. I had my training through my PGCE, lot of Humanities subjects (and others) provide opportunities to teach PSHE, with RSE included and I've had all my training through various organisations (and generally on the job!). There is so much opportunitiy out there :) if you'd like to know anymore about the PGCE or route into teaching PSHE/RSE give us a shout. :)

One other resource, that I'd recommend: www.sfsi.org/training/ -- sadly, not active during COVID, so who knows if/when/how it'll become a relevant resource again, but... just something to be aware of, especially for any viewers living in/around San Francisco and/or generally the SF Bay Area.

I looked up ISEE, and then found AASECT. You don't mention AASECT really during this video -- do you have thoughts on them? On their standards? As an American teacher who is increasingly drawn to being involved in sex education at my school, very interested to know your opinion! :)

I don't know much about AASECT, I'm personally not going for AASECT certification because I don't think it's relevant to my personal goals within sex education but they are the most well known body in the USA. And whilst you don't NEED it, I imagine being AASECT certified in the US would look good.

I have been a sexual health educator in the USA for over a decade. I chose not to get an AASECT certification since it is not a requirement for most jobs in the sexual health education field (I decided to get a Master's degree instead). However, if you are a nurse and want a certification in sexuality education because you want to practice as a Nurse Health Educator, then it would be useful and warrant higher pay. As a school teacher, you may find attending the AASECT annual conference to be more impactful and helpful to you in finding ways to teach about sexual health that is age appropriate for your students! Thank you for being a teacher and trying to provide positive sex ed to your students!

I actually cannot believe in 2020 their are still American states that have a policy of abstinence education! I would also be interested to know if religious school (my school was run by nuns and I had barley any sex Ed it was almost abstinence education ) will get an exemption to the compulsory sex education rules in the U.K. ?!

I am Very interested in sex education and working in a sexual space, however as a future preschool and Special Education teacher, I’ve always worried about talking about sex being frowned upon by my peers or boss. Mayhaps some training to be a sex educator in some schools in the area would be a good “professional” route to go down to pick up some extra money along the way!

i really want to be a sex educator but i’m an american who’s moving to the uk next year to study law at uni and i don’t know how i’d be able to stay in the uk if i tried to be a sex educator. it’s hard enough to get one of the high demand jobs to try to stay. :(( i really want to look into volunteering for an organization like Brook though!

Does anyone know of any good inclusive resources for sex ed aimed at adults with developmental/intellectual disabilities? All I've seen in my surface level searches is too childish for adults and/or painfully cis/heteronormative

Hi Morgan. I'm a 19-year-old male on the high functioning end of the autistic spectrum. I have had this issue as well although since I'm high functioning I've been ok with using neurotypical aimed resources. Hi Hannah I’m so bad about the net and especially RU-vid in general. I have a very rare specific sex education and for whatever reason I found myself asking questions I found Dr. Joe and then something I looked up in particular I found you I would like to send you my contact info not sure how to do it disregard my content there are four things that you’ve mentioned you don’t believe exist or can’t seem to figure out and I firsthand with my own eyes have witnessed the life hacks for these such things which I don’t mind telling you

I’ve said many critical things about it. I think there’s a lot of horrific problems with it but I also support sex workers and don’t shame people for watching porn - there’s a more nuanced conversation to be had and I’m not necessarily the best person to lead that.
