Cutting down the HUD elements is a great tip and I've used it for years. Not only could you say its more realistic that way, but it definitely helps not getting pressured by the state progress bar on the left and the +- difference between you and the leader that pops up from time to time in the middle of the screen. It distracts your eyes and needlessly make you push yourself too hard, just like PJ says.

@@nammar6435 it can be hard at first, but it was beneficial for me, because the flashing times and turn info was distracting. The progress bar too
@richardfreutel5002
@richardfreutel5002 3 года назад
I think that depends from driver to driver. In F1 for instance, the drivers regularly hear how they are doing with their time and how many seconds they are ahead/ behind someone (for DRS or Qualifying for instance). I personally leave the HUD because 1. I automatically try to only focus on what my co-driver SAYS instead of only looking at the icons, but i keep them in order to still know what he said if he was to quick or I didn't listen in time. And the progression bar on the left is kind of like Cuphead- it motivates me more than it distracts me....
@PJTierney
@PJTierney 3 года назад
Good discussion in here. Depending on the game, having lots of information to hand is great. For example when I play F1 I like to have the gap ahead/behind, the minimap and sometimes my Drifferential and Brake Bias settings on the screen. In rally though I just want the car and the road as Phil can tell me the corners.
@snakebite6x6x6

I agree 100%. I found that by removing the progress bar and section time updates I was able to drive a lot more consistently. I was more focused on the driving and not concerned with my time.... just focused on making it through the stage.

one of the best tips for pretty much every racing game is getting consistent. IMO the overall time is not as Important as getting similar times over multiple runs. because that's a solid baseline that you can analyze find your weaknesses and build upon.

Manual gears. Couldn't be bothered to start with, thought just concentrate on steering and pedals. But being able to engine brake, stop power understeer and short shift to stop sliding makes so much difference. Great tips. To add, I will say this game rewards a good tuning setup as much as it does driving. Tuning is there for you (most of the time), so use it to your advantage. You can manipulate certain unwanted characteristics like canceling out understeer with toe-out and diff tuning or help a rwd put the power down better using damping and spring settings. Its a great tool and its very fun to experiment with
@PJTierney
@PJTierney 4 года назад
Agreed, once you're a consistent driver tuning will help a great deal. Admittedly I'm not an expert in it when it comes to rally (my tuning knowledge is from circuit racing like Forza or F1), so I end up relying on GTR Technical for a baseline. 🙂

im 19, ive been driving a real car since 17, on civilian streets, one foot is all you need as even though its muscle memory for two feet, on the streets you have more to think about an could mistake your footing in the blink of an eye. I've almost done it and play these games both feet. HOWEVER, the muscle memory will kick in in a real car on a track. And not to sound like a dad, but when you get in an actual car...be smart. A game versus the real thing is very different and civilian cars...dont have a rollcage. and crashes are much more scary and could be fatal in an everyday car. I dont know how old you are bud, but don't be one of the young drivers we hear about on the news...the Lord knows how close I could of been.

You only need three things: -No HUD; -Headphones (very, very important!); -Lots of hours of race; To skip some of this hours make sure you understand weight and load transfer. If you are not left foot braking you will have no chance to be fast, even more on AWD cars. The main part after the car control itself is pace notes. When you get on the pace you can almost as see the road ahead, the shape and direction of a corner, the exit, what is after the jump, what side you should keep to the next entry. When you get this right, man, its pure poetry. Make sure you use headphones, very big difference on spoting the pace notes and actually get them.

Downshifting just before turn in is so helpful for a smooth turn initiation in combination with having maximum torque available to drag you away from danger on the outside of the corner. It's so much smoother and more consistent than trailbraking. I've been using manual shift forever but I never really used engine braking much and kept it in a higher gear through corners. Downshifting earlier with more engine braking helped my consistency so much. I am getting a lot more overheated engine damage though lol. I'm still learning to find the middle ground.

Lfb should be easier on controller imo. You don't have to split your attention between clutch and brake as much. You can just hold down both triggers. I've played racing games on controller before and the most difficult part was throttle and brake control rather than the ability to lfb. Great channel and great content! Savage to see another Irish sim racer doing content. We should look at collaborating at some stage.

Thanks, and keep it up 👍🏻 Maybe once I start streaming on RU-vid (I only do it on twitch right now) we could work something out 🙂

Another extra addition to the left foot breaking is that this way you can keep the turbo charged which is a huge benefit on modern cars when exiting a corner.
@PJTierney

Indeed, managing turbo lag is a big deal. Normally I give a little clutch kick out of slow corners if I feel the car's bogging down.

I have no problem driving on gravel and dirt etc but driving on a smooth track that’s where I struggle haha

On tarmac you should try not to slide around so much as it slows you down.

New sub. Good stuff! Is Dirt 4 comparable in realism? I have both but I find the grip in rally 2.0 feel super weak in newer cars. Is that just the PS4 version, or maybe wheel settings?
