Struggling to focus on work? Constantly find yourself procrastinating? Have difficulty concentrating or being mindful? It can help to stop practicing distraction. For more on learning to practice mindfulness, check out the Mental Fitness 101 course. It explores all of the fundamental skills and concepts that I cover with clients during the first month of working together, from starting a regular meditation practice to practicing non-judgment, understanding compulsions and translating values into actions. This is one of my problems, I try to do everything at once and get frustrated and end up doing nothing. As I watched this video, I caught myself thinking about other things that need to be done and this is something I struggle with.

Your advice and videos are awesome!! I never realised my brain was so messed up until my anxiety came to a head when I was having panic attacks and intrusive thoughts consumed me to the point I couldn't think about anything else. I was diagnosed with OCD and it sort of seemed like a weight off my shoulders because I finally knew why I was carrying out strange behaviours and rituals. It all made sense for the first time in 22 years and the hope of a better quality of life has really helped me to change many bad habits. I'm on the road to recovery but do find it hard as a lot of my compulsions are in my head. I struggle a lot with ruminating and half the time I don't even realise I'm doing it.

+Amy Olive Thanks! That's great you're moving along with recovery. Compulsions in the head are tough but just recognizing that you're doing them is a great step. Learning to keep your mind with you takes practice. Keep at it!

Just binge watching your videos today because they give me so much hope! There's an EDR therapist who also does ACT therapy, except she's an hour away and I don't have a car :( I'm going to try everything in my power to get there though, like maybe figure out the bus routes and have someone pick me up, idk. I also hope her sliding scale is low enough that I can afford some sessions. Cause I really want to get better! In the meantime, watching your videos make me feel less crazy. Laughing so hard at this video cause I'm laughing at myself because this is 100% me. Omg. The "my precious." But too. I just deactivated Facebook and I'm still trying to decide if that was a healthy or unhealthy decision, since Facebook has been proven to be unhealthy BUT, I also deactivated after someone triggered my OCD and I just couldn't stop ruminating. Gosh. Knowing healthy verses unhealthy is hard :( I avoid people irl and on fb.

Helw mark. I have a list on my goals, what I want to do. But when I make myself ready to go to my goals then intrusive thoughts or intrusive feelings comes to my mind and I tell myself that first I have to get ride of all intrusive thoughts or feelings which comes in my mind then I will take action, and then I judge them to get ride of them. But after get ride of all intrusive thoughts or intrusive feelings when I want to take action to my goals and then intrusive thoughts or intrusive feelings comes again to my mind and that's why I can't take any action to my goals. Plz mark let me know what I can do?

Stop telling yourself that first you have to get rid of the thoughts and feelings. The clouds don't have to decide how you live your life.

Hi Mark I feel that I can't cope if I don't keep my self distracted on everything its like some kind of magical thing so what I mean if is I don't distract myself with a movie or a show so I'm not in the real true moment then the bad thoughts make me go back and forth weather it is a step or driving 100 miles out of the way what the hell is going on with me ? I'm always doing everything to not be in the real reality ?
@everybodyhasabrain
@everybodyhasabrain 8 лет назад
It might help to see that as part of the problem, not a solution. The more you distract yourself, the less able you'll be to handle intrusive thoughts and the more your brain will throw them at you so you'll distract yourself.

Helw mark. How are you. Long time no see man. Mark I have a question to you that when I like something intrusive thoughts has come and those intrusive thoughts try to make lower my attraction from which things I like. Suppose I like a video of yours and when I see your that video fast time I feel very happy, very good feelings. But after a while intrusive thoughts comes into my mind that "this video not for me, or this video not for Intrusive thoughts so I can't follow it, or no mark dont said the things which I think and many more". This matter isn't only for video but also for everything which I like, if I like any self development book or anything after a while Intrusive thoughts comes into my mind to take away my attraction from that things which I like. Plz mark tell me what can I do?
@everybodyhasabrain
@everybodyhasabrain 8 лет назад
Hi Tanvir, intrusive thoughts can just be there. If you react to them and change your actions, then you'll have the intrusive thoughts even more. The same is true with feelings. Judging what we feel is a common compulsion. OCD is very much about trying to control what we feel. It sounds like you're trying to make yourself feel attraction in a specific way. That's no different than trying to feel safe, or clean, or right or any other feeling people chase with compulsions. The more you try to control it, the less you'll feel that feeling you want to feel.
@tanviramin7089
@tanviramin7089 8 лет назад
That means if intrusive thoughts or intrusive feelings comes into mind about about my favourite things( books, videos etc) I don't have to judge those intrusive thoughts or intrusive feelings. If I judge intrusive thoughts or intrusive feelings the less I will feel that feeling which I want to feel.

I'm planning on going on the Campino to Santiago de Compostella... in March. It will be at least 30 days I planned. I'll sleep on little rugs crammed together with dozens of people with basic hygene. And I'll have no distractions except for the wind, my footsteps and burglars or wolves. I want to go the places that scare me. I hope it will help. What was the very first step you did to tackle social anxiety ? I want to do this too !
@everybodyhasabrain
@everybodyhasabrain 8 лет назад
+1Kilili Have an amazing time on the trail! For social anxiety, there were many different things I did at the same time. Two of the most useful were no longer avoiding places or people or things and setting exercises, like: This week, I will speak to every person I'm in an elevator with. If you set a social goal before any situation, then it doesn't matter what your brain thinks up. You simply stick to your goal.
@1Kilili

Thank you ! I'll start with the elevator thing then.

Mark Freeman and how do I know?
@1Kilili
@1Kilili 8 лет назад
I saw an old photo of someone I got to know and lost sight of in 2009 . Then I realized it was 7 and a half years ago I last had contact with her and now lost her... and I feel real pain. Is that a normal human thing ? How do you deal with these definite things ? Do you care for that part that's in pain or do you just go on washing your car because that's what you value now and the pain is just a thought (i.e. a cloud not worth caring for)?
@everybodyhasabrain
@everybodyhasabrain 8 лет назад
+1Kilili Once you're experiencing pain, that's a feeling you can experience. It's already there. If you don't like experiencing that pain, then it might help to cut out the compulsions that led to it. The opportunity to practice acceptance of our experience comes before we start judging that experience or ourselves. When you looked at that picture, you could have chosen a variety of actions. Once you start judging that experience, it's only natural to experience feelings you don't like. This video goes more in-depth: "Stop Hitting Yourself In The Face With A Hammer" ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5YavohiTzhA.html

***** But you remember that you liked that person and you know now you will never see her again in your life. Why would you not be sad ? Your approach is very effective and I appreciate your work very very much. But sometimes it seems so very clinical and depersonalized that it almost distresses me. But maybe iti has to be.
@everybodyhasabrain
@everybodyhasabrain 8 лет назад
Haha but there's nothing wrong with being sad. That's a feeling you can feel like anything else. That's why I included the "if" in my previous comment. If you want to feel sad, feel sad. Welcome that feeling. There's nothing wrong with it. If you don't want to feel sad, don't do the things that make you sad.

Can you explain to menthe difference between thought suppression and switching certain thoughts off? I believe at times i suppress thoughts making me feel bad at times.
@everybodyhasabrain
@everybodyhasabrain 8 лет назад
Typically, I approach this as the difference between having a thought pop into your head and thinking. You don't control the thoughts that pop into your head but you do control what you do with them. Trying to suppress a thought is generally about trying to not have specific intrusive thoughts or feelings a person dislikes. But that's not something they control so it'll only make them more miserable and have the thoughts even more. But what they do with the thoughts after they experience them is something they control. If you start engaging with a thought and thinking about it and focusing on it, that is something you control. If you recognize you're thinking about something that's of no use to you, you can choose to give your awareness to something else that you value. That's not about suppressing the thought that triggered that thinking. That thought can be there. It doesn't have to go away because there's nothing wrong with it. But you have other things you want to give your attention to right now.

@everybodyhasabrain 8 лет назад
+Ashley James Walker Mindfulness is all about being in the present, on purpose, without judgment. So it might be useful to explore where the guilt is coming from. Guilt can't stop you from recovering or being mindful. Guilt is only a feeling, like any other feeling. If that's what you're feeling in the present, then you can be aware of that without judgment. Reacting to that feeling to try to control it would only be a compulsion. Learning to be with that feeling while you do the things that matter to you is a useful skill to develop for recovery, just like learning to do healthy things while experiencing any feeling. At the same time, learning to practice mindfulness will help with experiencing feelings like that much less. Guilt typically depends on judgment. If we're being mindful, then we're not engaging in judgment compulsions, and we're not cultivating guilt. But mindfulness is a skill, so as we build our skills, we'll still find ourselves judging others and ourselves all of the time. And we can recognize that and bring ourselves back to the present and the things we love.

+Mark Freeman I see, through mindfulness I may not be able stop my thoughts, but i can act accorsing to my values. my personal dilemma lies with if I have actively thought something bad about a loved one, should i let it go?
