A year ago I broke up with my girlfriend and experienced great sadness. I mustered my strength and set out to change myself to get out of it and in a year I have done hell of a lot of things and grown as a person. During this time I adopted the idea that I want to be the person my friends can rely on. Every time I go out and meet someone I'd want to make their day just a bit better. I want to be successful and lift up others, who too can be successful. In the last month however I lost this idea and got to a dark place in my mind. It took me effort to slowly get out of it and this video helped me further to continue what I set out to do and realign myself to my goals. It's not easy, but I believe it's worth it.

This is the most important message that can be taught in the West right now. We have lost all pride in our past, all confidence in the present, and all hope for the future. We need to re-gain our confidence or our society will be consumed by nihilism, and God only knows what will replace it.

I'm proud of my European heritage, confident that we can do something, and optimistic about the future. Because if I don't do it, how can I expect someone else to do it for me?
@Deliquescentinsight

Europeans have always been strong and brilliant people-i have every faith in you to overcome this grave challenge to your existence.
@Xeronimo74
@Xeronimo74 7 лет назад
Randy Kalff how can you be proud of that heritage? You didn't do anything to end up with that heritage ...
@RandyKalff
@RandyKalff 7 лет назад
+Xeronimo74 If we are to take the definition of "proud", it becomes obvious. "Feeling deep pleasure or satisfaction as a result of one's own achievements, qualities, or possessions or those of someone with whom one is closely associated" My European heritage also means that I have genes that give me better qualities. (IQ and length being the tip of the iceberg) Many achievements of mine are thanks to my European heritage, specifically because of the granted environment. (although that's a bit of a stretch on the definition) And then the "someone with whom one is closely associated" refers to my ancestors as well. But even if we were to take the more common usage of the term, it's still easily possible to be proud of your heritage. Mind you that I haven't been talking about it too much so it will be rather messy in articulation. Basically I'm proud of my heritage because I'm apart of it. What I do is contributing to the whole. Just like you can be proud of your country if you help it earn its position.
@RandyKalff
@RandyKalff 7 лет назад
+Xeronimo74 Did I ever say that there weren't? I didn't. My point was that those traits are from the European side of my family. (I'm quarter Indonesian as well) "Feeling (deep) satisfaction as a result of one's own qualities" There's your answer. And I do deserve them in my books because I try my best to utilize them as much as possible. The point in that statement is that while I didn't do anything to get it, I do contribute to it. Also, you can easily be proud of winning the lottery. It's an achievement that requires the quality of being lucky and gives you a lot of possessions.

I had to be the person to call my father like two hours after my brother had died in a car crash in order to tell him the news. Boy I can tell you, what Dr. Peterson says is one of those truths you should take to the core of your being, because we severely underestimate our own emotional fortitude.
@SourPatchLyds

Nife it is amazing to me what the most 'ordinary' people can do.
@RandyKalff
@RandyKalff 7 лет назад
Having few emotions teaches you a lot about emotional fortitude. Personally, I've learned that it's quite the lonely life as the one guy who just won't cry.
@Nif3
@Nif3 7 лет назад
That's very true as well. When you become a person who everyone can rely upon, not only you're left feeling unappreciated, but when your shit hits the fan, NO ONE will be able to give you the support you truly need.
@RandyKalff
@RandyKalff 7 лет назад
+Nife I actually like being relied upon. It's just something about being the stable foundation/rock. And I never think to turn to others when something goes wrong with me. If I can get myself into it, I can get myself out of it. Plus, I really don't want to bother others with my mistakes/bad luck. It's my problem, not theirs. (Yes, I know that to be a dangerous attitude but I also can't feel fear as far as I know) To me, the problem is that there's no one like me around me unless it's some depressed emo kid. And who wants to get near those? At a funeral (rather recently actually happened) I'm the guy who smiles and just observes everything around me. Often I think things like "Why would you cry so much about something like this?" because it's a response I just don't understand. On something like that I have a simple motto thanks to the attitude; What happened in the past can't be changed in the present or future so why not change your reaction to it for the better? But also with happiness (one of my only (relatively) strong emotions) I find a similar problem. Because I'm always that parent like figure who just stands by with a smile. I don't easily get as excited as a child or such, usually just up to regular happiness. (often with a bit more loudness) And when I do get excited a lot, I only have a lot of energy being spend on the thing that excites me. (usually a new project) With anger I find something rather annoying. I don't get angry easily but when I do, I always channel it into energy and strength. And you don't want to know how bad things can get if you anger me in a fight because then it's not only energy and strength anymore. But because I can't get angry easily, I can't harvest much energy. Even after taking off all of the breaks, it barely improved anything. And then there's emotions blocking rational thought. After years of focus on it, I rarely feel any resemblance of emotion when using the rational parts of my brain. This is useful in debates but it's anything but fun to see others fall into the pitfall of emotional reactions. That part being even worse due to my natural urge to help others improve themselves. The biggest gap between me and others, however, is certainly the whole fear thing. I don't know whether there's something wrong with my amygdala or what but I have no recollection of fear nor can I find anything I'm afraid of. (and I've searched) So when people talk about being afraid of something, I have absolutely nothing to add to the conversation. I don't know what it's like nor do I know why it's so hard to overcome them. It's just all one big odd cloud. But I do think that once I get a family, my kids will benefit greatly from such a stable force in the house. Although, I first need to get a damn job. (Ideas by any chance?)
@Ebb0Productions
@Ebb0Productions 7 лет назад
Randy Kalff Having a rock in the house is definitely a good thing for a solid family. However your feeling aspect sound like an absolute mess. If you want to be more than an authoritarian figure in the house you may want to develop your empathetic side if you have one. If the father don't understand emotions he comes off as a robot, which in turn can make his children feel ashamed and weak for having fears, doubts, or being sad. I don't mean to be condescending, I just want you to remember that having some wisdom of feeling and emotion is just as important as being a stable rock. You don't want your kids to channel anger into action, and you can't expect kids to handle death the way you do.

I put this to practice last year in a hospital as my father in law died in my arms after a battle with cancer. I sat down for a few minute to submerge and wrap my head around what happened. I then called my wife and broke the news to her and told her to play this on her way to the hospital. This past November I lost my little sister of 11 years to COVID and had to shoulder my mother as I walked into the room and make the call to my father. I really do wrestle with my confusion but I trust God more to bring me peace when answers don’t bring peace. God Bless people give a good fight.

I've always wanted to write a book titled "Surviving Victory". Humanity has come so far and achieved so many great things. I believe individual liberty is the top of heap (and leads to prosperity for all). If we're all allowed to live our lives the way we see fit, you can't improve life past that. Attempting to correct the world past that can only destroy what we've achieved. Aiming for equal outcomes for example. In the West obesity is one of our major problems. Our ancestors could never conceive of such a thing.

I understood so many things the last week , I matured of 3-4 years in few days. How "positive" people are victims of their mediocrity. Me being hated by "overly nice people" (isolating only few people by passive aggressivness)for laughing at the fatality of life (I like sarcasm and they hate me for this). Btw, I'm talking about people at work. Isn't ironic that optimistic people hate me for being able to find humor in tragedy? All the stuff teached by Peterson helped me to overcome the impossibility of this realm of existence. Being borderline arrogant with a tone of politeness and courtoisie, seem to be the path, we have to assume the war waged against our personal/psychological interest in order to protect ourselves the best way possible. Can't be submissive to the social/intellectual terrorism. Parasites are a call to action, otherwise, they will never stop. Though Schaupenhauer taught us that people who free themselves from mental pulses can access to their creativity/greatness so they become awoke that it's the same pulses that are making people miserable/detestable. Those genius hate more these pulses than everything else and have compassion for those who are enslaved/possessed by this energy of general sabotage. Anyway, thanks to J. Peterson. For me it's already to late but the enlightenment make it more bearable and I still can answer to the question of hopeless young generation. Blessings.

The book he refers to is excellent, and was written after much research and interviews of crew members. It is truly inspiring. I use that condition as a barometer for how I look at bad I feel things are. If that crew can survive such, chances are my problems too can be overcome. It is right in the vein of what Dr Peterson speaks so often about. Imagine what you can become.

Another fantastic book like "Endurance" is "In the Kingdom of Ice". In 1879, about 30 men set out to find the mythical Open Polar Sea, thought to exist at the north pole, created from the currents of the Gulf Stream and Kuro Siwo. The ship wrecked in the ice thousands of miles north of desolate Siberia--their only possible refuge. Both inspiring and tragic, probably the best book I've ever read.

I read "Endurance" by Alfred Lansing, published in 1959, about five or six years ago and was greatly impressed by this account of Shackleton and his men. I had seen a TV version of the events starring Kenneth Branagh as Shackleton. It is a remarkable story of leadership and survival, very inspiring indeed. Ranulph Fiennes' book about Captain Scott is also outstanding, debunking the myths about Scott being an incompetent leader, or a heroic "failure". We should be celebrating men like Shackleton and Scott. Although Amundsen and his men reached the South Pole first, using huskies, Scott and his men were the first to get there by man-hauling their loads. They made important scientific discoveries too, whereas Amundsen was more interested and getting the Pole efficiently and of course returning safely.

The difficult chapters in our storyline are beneficial for our personal and professional growth and development, although only if we have a willingness to learn from the difficulty’s. We must pay attention. We must become Student’s obtaining the required nuggets of Truth, Wisdom and Knowledge for the next inevitable difficulty. We must be fully committed in our lives and that requires individual Perseverance, Endurance, Belief and a healthy dose of Fortitude to progress in our journey, so that we can accomplish our Life’s Purpose - which is to help our fellow man. Dr. Jordan Peterson, thank you for your messaging… in everything we must bear our lives difficulties with Optimism. As my wise grandmother instructed, “If you think you’re having a hard time in Life, wait for your next conversation or a newspaper story headline. Then you’ll realize someone has it far worse.” Now that’s good down-home parenting… according to Grandma. 🙌

I was just watching a documentary about Walt Disney and his history. He seemed to embody this process of optimizing his behavior, and he was an immensely optimistic person as well. His first animation studio was a failure. He sold his camera and moved out to Hollywood. His second studio nearly failed, he attempted to renegotiate with his distributor, but found out that they had hired his animators out from under him and stole his new intellectual property, Oswald the Rabbit. On the train ride home he invented Mickey Mouse. With the success of Mickey Mouse he began mastering new technology, first sound, then color, then the multi-plane camera. Then he decided to do a feature length animated film. Everyone thought he was insane, they called it "Disney's folly". The film was Snow White, the first ever animated feature and a huge success. Then there was the strikes, and World War II. They couldn't afford to make animated features so he switched to live action, and had more success. By this time Walt had begun to envision Disneyland. Of course the financiers wouldn't approve it, but there were TV networks that wanted him to produce a Disney TV show, and he agreed with provisions that they invest in the parks. Disneyland was another enormous success. Near the time of his death, Walt Disney was planning "EPCOT", which was intended to be a perpetually innovating high-technology model of "the community of tomorrow". The man went from wanting to make cartoons, to planning a whole city. There is no telling where things might have gone, had he lived on. The story goes, that while he was in the hospital he was too ill to sit up, and was planning out EPCOT on the grid layout of the ceiling tiles above his hospital bed.

I believe they used to call that "substantial". Some of these words in regards to charachtet are lost now. Maybe introduce a child starting at 4 or 5 to the word substantial, e.g. "what you did there (son or daughter) was substantial, if they help a friend, or do whatever. As an adult I've felt less than substantial at tmes, and it's ok, its just important to aim for the higher goal for self and maybe direct the young ones.

I'm optimistic about our society's future. Both because we've been through the Black Death without too much of a struggle and because it's the only way to have a chance. If we don't believe in our own competence, we will turn ourselves incompetent without a doubt.

That it is empowering doesn't necessarily eliminate the naivety, judging by what he usually talks about i'd guess he is talking about the helplessly desperate scenarios where to be optimistic is clutching at straws. May be empowering but it is still naive. Like if a jew expected to be rescued before annihilation in a death camp, yes it may be valuable to be optimistic but it's naive nonetheless.

You didn't fully understand his video. I apologize if I seem patronizing as I say this: What he means is that blind optimism is naive. A child is blindly optimistic. Optimism that is not naive, which he advocates for, is optimism despite the terrible suffering of the world. But first, it must be recognized by the person that there is unbearable suffering in the world. The person must genuinely understand, encounter even, true suffering, so that they are prepared to handle it. To put it metaphorically: Naive optimism is running out onto the field of battle in silken clothing seeing flowers and rainbows everywhere. Mature optimism is running out into a battlefield in a suit of armor wielding a sword prepared to fight, and hoping that they will win.

So... realistic optimism is belief in our potential strength that we do not have yet. Not because things are fine or will be just fine, but because we might become someone who will endure life and prosper... even though we are not that person yet. Hope I summed it up correctly

I suppose so much of life is about perspective. Perhaps those who were slaves in horrible conditions should have the optimism that their anglosaxon owner master had. We all should be optimistic no matter what.

Doubt is your subconscious trying to tell you something. Sometimes it's trying to point out a problem. Sometimes it's making up excuses.

Abrupt catastrophic climate change has already pushed us over the rubicon .This will test us like no other challenge ,as the worlds flora cannot adapt to an ever increasingly destabilized atmosphere.Perhaps collective optimism and commitment will see us through.

Maybe. Survival mode can bring out the best in a person (or the worst). People don't always have the opportunity to show their stuff like those men on the Endurance. I'll try to be more optimistic. ;-)

TeaTime you only know how tough you are if you test yourself against adversity, or come up against adversity. Maybe people aren't so tough now because they don't have adversity to test against, or they don't really know how tough they are because they have never measured themselves against a difficult task. Those bits of teaching, the ones about overcoming the biggest obstacle possible and then getting up and going for another, are my favorite teaching bits of JBP. I haven't found an ideal clip to put up on FB or anything yet, but when I do, that clip is going to become a mantra of mine. Every time I go to the gym, or want to yell at my kids, that's the bit of teaching I want to remember. "You can achieve so much more."

Some good ole fashion hardship would bring some toughness out. One of the challenges is that the whinging donkey SJW , and the virtue signaling news media puppets have never done it hard. Decades of peace and prosperity softens people and their innate aggressive impulses are directed at themselves and others for petty reasons. They dont know how to deal with their 'dark' side

What if some not so bright person completely misunderstands the whole thing about being a monster at your parents funeral, and proceeds to act like an actual monster. Instead of being a strong person to rely on he throws burning acid in people's faces etc, shit like that. "I got it from jordan, be a monster he said."

The only optimism I think that’s not naive and stupid is when the pieces are set and the chips are down, you are past the point of changing anything, powerless and only to see the result plays out, then it’s good to be optimistic and hopeful, or when everything goes to the worst of the worst and you literally lost everything, then you should be hopeful cuz you got nothing to lose only to gain at the point on, other than that I don’t think optimism means anything than a happy word for stupidity

Humanity set the Earth on the path to becoming Venus. How is humanity not a plague? Do leopards ever ruin some planet's atmosphere? No, it's us. We do that.
@hexagram531
@hexagram531 2 года назад
So you hate yourself, do you. You don't have a partner because they're just more awful plague viruses. You hate your mother. You've never looked at a work of art. You've never looked at a baby without feeling it should die before it destroys something. You've never seen a charitable act, or the work done by a hospital. You've never had the opportunity to find out about - even if you are not able to visit - the wonders of Rome and Florence and Venice and New York. "How is humanity not a plague?"!! Get some therapy. You're seriously ill, and we all need you to be better. Do even leopards have the sense to defend themselves and to look after their young, and to keep living because they know it's worth it? What would all those endangered species do without people who look after them? - they'd fall to death by predators, under brainless Darwinian selection, because they can't build civilizations or ethical systems.
