To avoid staying poor, focus on three things: believe in the power of hard work, value money, and understand the difference between money and credit. If you think hard work doesn't really pay off, you're missing the point. It's not about comparing yourself to someone with more advantages. It's about seeing the opportunities right in front of you. If you and someone from a similar background put in different amounts of effort at work, the one who works harder and smarter is likely to get ahead. This fairness is what true meritocracy is all about.
Feeling negative about money or pretending it doesn't matter only holds you back. Deep down, wouldn't it be amazing to easily cover your bills and care for your family without stress? Money, when you earn it and use it wisely, can truly enhance your life and the lives of those you care about. It's not about chasing wealth for its own sake but recognizing money as a tool for creating opportunities and securing well-being.
Also, it's crucial to know the real meaning of money versus credit. Money is what you own, and credit is just a promise. Understanding this difference is key to managing your finances effectively and ensuring you're not just surviving, but thriving.

Meritocracy does not apply to the nonprofit healthcare organization where I work in the US. I have received excellent, outstanding annual reviews for nine years - and have not received even one merit raise! There are also no automatic annual cost of living raises and those are very rare. The only way people get more pay is to job hop within the organization, no matter how much money you bring into the company. They say they have no money for raises, however have plenty of money to open more and more clinics. The only blessing is working from home most of the time...

The other thing they like to do is to hire kids straight out of school many of whom do NOT perform well, but they can pay them less.

One disadvantage of home work is less opportunity to make friends with coworkers and management. I agree meritocracy is not fully practiced in the US. It's more about DEI quotas and ethnic preferences.

@@Westernkind Yes, and that's part of the stupidity of companies who liike people working in tje office - lowere productivity because people are outside of their offices chatting more often, walking down halls for coffee and bathroom use, etc. Home is so much more efficient and also encourages sharpened focus. I agree though, that it doesn't encourage "shmoozing" with management, and unfortunately, tjat is often the determining factor - not productivity, creativity, or $ generating projects. They also do hire based on DEI...

I'll add however, that the part of Equity they forgot to include is supporting senior employees.
