You are a liar. You do not reveal to the world who you really are. You constantly observe the context and the people around you, then use that information to change how you present yourself. We all do that, and it helps us fit into social settings. However, it can also cause problems when we become too incongruent with who we really are and spend too much effort repressing our true nature. Let me explain a bit about masking, camouflaging, and compensation.
Masking is when you hide your true feelings or behaviors to fit in with social norms. In ancient theater, actors used masks, or "personae," to play different characters, which is where the term "personality" originates. Modern masking involves similar behavior, like agreeing with a decision you disagree with to avoid conflict. Camouflaging goes beyond masking; it's changing your behavior or appearance to blend in and avoid standing out. For example, a new employee might mimic colleagues' behaviors to fit in. Compensation is about developing new skills to manage areas where you feel less confident, like taking public speaking classes to handle social anxiety. It doesn't matter if you call it masking, camouflaging, or compensation; these behaviors help you fit in and make social interactions smoother. They are about adapting to social expectations to facilitate better interactions, not deceit.
