Hey Ashley, I am a foreign architect in Toronto, I am struggling with getting a job on an architecture firm, even as a cad Drafter... I did a 2 year postgraduate on construction management, none the less its difficult to be considered by an architecture firm. What courses or steps (maybe admission into a regulatory organization) do you think can increase my chances of getting a job in Architecture?

Thank you Gabriel! If I can do it, you can too 😊 It depends on what you prefer and what works better for you. If you need more flexibility the Syllabus program is a good option however if you need more structure and prefer in person learning I would recommend the university route. I personally prefer in person learning over online learning, its more engaging.

Hi Ashley, thanks for sharing this! I'm thinking of career change. This program looks fantastic! It seems Part II and III have to be taken in person in Canada (studio), is that right? If without any drawing or designing background, what should I do to get that started? I currently live in the US and pursuing a real estate license, but eventually, I want to design houses and learn architecture along the way. Do you know any of your colleagues who work in US and how they transfer their licensure to the US? Great video!
@architecture_tv
@architecture_tv 3 года назад
Hi 👋 You're welcome! That's correct the studio's are completed in Canada. You'll need to have a portfolio which illustrates your artistic skills. When I applied for my undergrad and had no architecture background I used my paintings (portraits and landscapes), pencil & ink drawings (portraits, landscapes, objects, etc.), sculptures, etc. I used all the projects that I completed in my art class in the portfolio. The following is a clip from the Syllabus program website which explains what they are expecting in the portfolio: "The admission application asks for a portfolio. What is required? What are you expecting? The purpose of the admission portfolio is to provide studio coordinators with an understanding of an incoming student's artistic capabilities, in at least 5-10 images. A portfolio is intended to demonstrate a range of drawing and modeling techniques, showing both hand and computer work. Consider if the work demonstrates your understanding and applicant of colour, texture, materiality, and form. The use of multiple media is appreciated, but the portfolio MUST INCLUDE hand sketches (portraits, perspectives, patterns, objects, or landscapes)." Some students may have advanced building science knowledge and can demonstrate that in building plans, sections, elevations, and details. However, the portfolio should be of your original work, nothing that was created in a firm or office. The portfolio should be made of past work. It is not the intent that students create work exclusively for their portfolio submission." The following is a link for more info: raic-syllabus.ca/faqs#portfolio? I know a few colleagues that transferred US degrees to Canada and are working in Canada. As long as your degree is accredited by the NAAB then you could transfer it over to Canada through the CACB, cacb.ca/accredited-professional-degree/. I don't know if the Syllabus program can be transferred to the US, I would recommend getting in contact with RAIC Syllabus Registrar at info@raic-syllabus.ca. They would be best to answer your question. You could also do a Master's in Architecture and as long as its an accredited program by the CACB (Canadian Architectural Certification Board) it is also recognized in the US, and several other countries under the Canberra Accord. Once you get your education from an accredited program then you need to collect your experience and write the exams. I have more experience with the Canadian process to licensure since I'm licensed in Canada however I would recommend looking into the NAAB www.naab.org/, the AIA (American Institute of Architects) www.aia.org/, and if you need more information about the Canadian process I would recommend a few more videos on the channel (see below) along with the RAIC (Royal Architectural Institute of Canada website raic.org/. - How to become an Architect in Canada: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-U7lMs-9EzVQ.html - My journey to licensure: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-SSxirWMYBoU.html I hope this helps 😊

Hi Ashley! Loved the video and found abundance of information just what i needed. One querry, is it possible to attain the Architect license after some years if i initially do a 2 year Post Grad. Diploma course in a field in relation to architecture and not a Degree course from a university?
@architecture_tv
@architecture_tv 3 года назад
Hi Divit, beyond the Syllabus program the other option to licensure is doing the university path which means doing a Bachelor's degree which can be outside of architecture (i.e. fine arts, philosophy, sciences, etc.) or within architecture. Then you need to do a masters degree from an accredited school, in Canada there are currently 12 programs. If you hold a bachelor's degree from an international school that is a minimum of 5 years then you could get your education certified by the CACB and you wouldn't need a masters degree. So these are the main methods for licensure, anything outside of this wouldn't allow you to be licensed in Canada. I hope this helps.

new subscriber, I just got my architectural technician diploma from Georgian College, I hope RAIC can accept some of the courses I have taken in that program as advanced standing, So I will not lose my 2 years of study (Also paid as an international student and don't want to waste the $30,000 I paid with effort). This RAIC alternative is great for most people starting a new life in Canada and need income, gain experience and education at the same time. Please bring us more info from RAIC I think there could be a lot of valuable content. Thank you for what you do.

Does anyone know if theres a way to do this for becoming licensed in the USA?
@jacobb590
@jacobb590 Год назад
Yes, there is a way. As of July 2023 15 states will accept experience in lieu of a degree. I am a licensed architect in two states and do not have a degree. Once you are licensed for 3 years you can submitt a portfolio to earn an NCARB certificate which will allow you to get licensed in 42 states. The states that do not accept the certificate really do not matter much. It can take longer without a degree depending on which state you get licensed in but you will have more experience and knowledge of the profession vs a recent graduate. An architect without a degree and 7-10 years experience vs. an architect with a degree and 2-5 years experience will earn more money and will not have the student loan debt. An associates degree in architectural technology is a good option for someone with little to no knowledge of the profession. This degree is less demanding, cost less, there are online options, and can allow you to work fulltime whereas a NAAB accredited degree can require 80+ hours a week in course work which will prohibit you from earning an income, cost significantly more, and require you to attend fulltime. There are online NAAB accredited degrees but they are very expensive.
